What kind of CPU and power supply are you running?
GPU Buying Guide - (Read first post) in Desktops ·
Which 400W power supply? 😁

EDIT: Never mind, found it in my old posts...

It's a Corsair 400W, from the CX Series CMPSU-400CXEU, with a 12cm fan.

That should hold up...

Installing a GPU is pretty straightforward...

You could also go with this one; it’s a bit more powerful than the MSI R9 270 Twin:

Nvidia GT 640 2GB graphics card in Desktops ·
System RAM on the motherboard isn't the same thing as the VRAM on your graphics card, and I think DDR4 won't really be the standard until next year... maybe a GTX 660 would be your best bet for $433 from that link above.

But you didn't mention a budget, so I'm kind of flying blind on what to recommend 😛

You won't get much out of a GT 640; honestly, nothing from Nvidia is really worth it unless you step up to a GTX 650 Ti Boost or a GTX 660.

Maybe look at a GTX 650 if you need Nvidia specifically for video editing, though it’s probably overpriced for what it actually does—it's still pretty weak for gaming.

A GTX 760 for about $567, though I suspect it's just the reference cooler version

You can snag a GTX 660 for less than $433
Honestly, any B85 board in the $50-$$200 range should do fine since you aren't planning on overclocking; there isn't really a noticeable difference in quality.

I see the Spacecraft 600 is listed at over $90, but it only comes with one fan and it's nothing special. These days, Zalman makes some really solid, budget-friendly cases. I'd grab the Z3+ instead of the Maverick (+$33).

I think you might be wrong here. 😬

That whole Core 2 dual-core lineup actually runs pretty cool, and you can definitely squeeze a bit more out of them.
But hey, if you're planning on upgrading to something brand new very soon anyway, maybe just leave it alone.

The Radeon R9 290X and Radeon R9 290 with custom coolers should be dropping soon. If you aren't in a huge rush, I guess it might be worth waiting. 😉

CPU upgrade ideas? in Desktops ·
Timothy Kim60 said:I guess he just disabled turbo, undervolted it to 1.3V, and bumped it up to 4.0 GHz without any issues.

Yeah, I've mentioned a few times now that Intel tends to be pretty conservative with stock voltage. Some people were actually able to undervolt an Intel Core i7-4770K down to 1.22 V at best... and they still ended up with practically a 100W TDP.

I guess my pick would be an AMD FX 6300 Overclocked at 4-4.2GHz paired with an AMD Radeon R9 280X... that should probably pull around 50 FPS on average at max settings based on this link, though you could always dial a few things back and call it a day.

So, what does it mean when I say you'll need at least an AMD Radeon R9 280X or an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770... and probably an overclocked i5 4670K to make it work?

Kimberly Gomez34 said:Look, you aren't going to hit 60 FPS in Battlefield 4 at 1080p max settings with that CPU, no matter which graphics card you throw at it.

If you're lucky and have a motherboard that actually supports it, you might be able to unlock four cores on those chips—provided the silicon is good enough.

It definitely should if it's using a 970 chipset.😉

Maybe try unlocking it first.

Also... from what I can tell, you know your way around an overclock. A solid move might be pairing an AMD Radeon R9 270X with an AMD FX 6300 Overclocked. Just maybe don't go too crazy with the voltage; I'm guessing you're running one of those Gigabyte 970 boards, which aren't exactly built for heavy overclocking.

I’d probably steer clear of those NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 or EVGA single-fan models if I were you; maybe just stick to the absolute cheapest option available...
