Used PC builds: What are they worth? in Desktops ·
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/512?vs=539 😛I guess this might be worth a quick look.

You won't be able to overclock that 😬

Maybe bumping the FBI up by 5 might help.😁

It looks like a solid deal. You get a 3-year warranty, it pulls almost a third of the power, and I guess it’s maybe 30% faster... if you can swing it, grab the 🙂

Zachary Fowler55 said:Hey, I don't want to start a whole new thread, but I'm thinking about picking up a used HD 4850 on eBay. I noticed there are several different versions listed—Gainward, Toxic, EVGA, etc.

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=hd+4850

I'm kind of torn on which one to grab. I just need it to run ARMA 3 and maybe some other games on decent settings. Nothing crazy, just something reliable.

My current setup:
Intel Core 2 Duo clocked at 2800 MHz
3 GB RAM
ASUS ROG motherboard
500 W power supply

Gainward($107) or EVGA($133)... the others seem way too expensive or they use those single-slot coolers that aren't really great.

@Olivia Collins5 Heh, you know, I've only ever had issues with NVIDIA, but never with AMD 😬 ... though I guess I always look at the value for money.

The GTX 1060 isn't really worth it for $283, I'd probably go with a GTX 1060 Ti for around $350, but that might be total overkill for what you need.

Well, his board only has one PCI-e slot, so... 😬

Larry Bailey94 said:So, while I was saving up, I did some digging and asked around. Honestly, everyone—at least 20 people who actually know their stuff—told me the Athlon is junk compared to the Phenom. So, I managed to sell my old rig and decided to pull the trigger this Monday on a full build. Here’s the lineup:

-Motherboard: MSI 970 A-G46, AM3+, DDR3, built specifically for Phenom processors

-Processor: AMD Phenom II x4 955 Black Edition, s. AM3, 3.2GHz, 8MB cache, Quad-core

-Graphics Card: ASUS Radeon HD 7770

-Power Supply: 600W, LC Power Pro Line Series, ATX, v2.3, 135mm fan, black

-Memory: PC-10666, 4 GB, MUSHKIN SilverLine Stiletto, 996768, DDR3 1333MHz, 3x2GB kit - People say RAM runs better when you use 2 or more sticks for better distribution...

-Hard Drive: 750.0 GB, Western Digital WD7500AZEX, SATA3, 64MB cache, 7200 RPM, desktop

-DVD±RW: ASUS DRW-24B5ST/BLK/B/AS, 24x, SATA, Dual Layer, black, bulk

- And finally the case: Thermaltake Commander MS-I

Total comes out to roughly $400-$420, and I think it's a pretty decent setup 😉 what do you guys think?

There are better boards out there... that Athlon isn't just slightly weaker; it's a completely different architecture from the K10 Athlon, plus it overclocks like crazy. The HDD isn't a great deal since you can grab a 1TB for just a few bucks more. The PSU is total overkill, and there are cheaper versions of that GPU. For the RAM, you really want dual channel (use 2 or 4 sticks; 3 is a bad idea). The case is just okay...

Do you still think it's as good as ours? 😬

He practically ate Alonso alive for breakfast. No idea where he found that kind of momentum all of a sudden, but man, you gotta respect it.

Honestly, everything from the GT 610 up to the GTX 650 seems pretty much a waste of money. I guess the GT 640 is actually even weaker than an HD 6670...

For him, it’s basically business as usual. There's no way you spend two days hovering around a 1:20 and then suddenly find another massive chunk of time to hit a 1:17.800.😉
What kind of magic tires would you even need to shave over two seconds off a single lap?🤷
The only thing that makes sense is if he was stuck on intermediates or wets during those first two days.

Maybe they just dropped from 100 liters down to 60 or something like that. 😛

You’d definitely notice a difference... though maybe there are better options out there if you're looking at used gear, since all three are pretty ancient by now.

What kind of budget are we looking at? Also, what else is in the rig—specifically the power supply (brand, model, and wattage)?

The GTX 450 uses DDR5, from what I can tell. 🙂

EDIT: That was a solid link you shared there. 😁

I know they both run on DDR5, but I guess Nvidia is just faster either way...

True enough... honestly, even at 4 GHz, it probably wouldn't change much.

+1

I guess the only new card actually worth picking up is an HD 6670 GDDR3 for about $150
