Used PC builds: What are they worth? in Desktops ·

Could someone please give me an estimate on this? 🙂

$500 + monitor... $83.

You didn't mention which power supply you're using (brand and model).
Just my two cents until someone more experienced weighs in—if it's some generic no-name unit that just came bundled with the case or the box, $467
Monitor is $100 MAX

Roughly... I'd probably start at $500 just to have a baseline, plus the monitor 😛

northernbison64 said:Hey everyone, I'm wondering about the reliability of Thermaltake power supplies. I'm thinking about picking up one of those 530W TT Smart models for my current build, which looks like this:

4GB DDR3 RAM
1TB Western Digital Hard Disk
AMD Radeon HD 7750 1GB GDDR5
AMD A8 5500 Quad-core APU
ASRock FM2A75 PRO4

That PSU is way too expensive—honestly, it's total overkill for what you're running. Also, I guess I have to ask: why use an APU with integrated graphics when you already have a dedicated card? 😬 You probably would've been better off going with an AMD Athlon x4 750k paired with an HD 7850 😉 instead.

It’s much more cost-effective, and you'll still have plenty of room to upgrade later since your setup barely pulls ~200W at peak load... if it even hits that.

The hierarchy seems to be HD 7850 > GTX 660 > HD 7870, with maybe a 10% gap between each step

Or maybe you could go even $33 bigger:

You’d probably need at least 1kW if you're running a combo of 3x NVIDIA GTX 580 or an HD 7970 on an Intel Sandy Bridge-E platform... but for most high-end builds, an XFX 450W/550W or something similar should be plenty enough.

1 x ASRock FM2A75 PRO4 - AMD A75 Hudson D2, M-ATX, Capacitor
1 x AMD Trinity A10-Series x4 5800, 3.80GHz, Quad-core, FM2
1 x 8GB DDR3 (2x4GB) Kingston, 1866MHz, CL9, HyperX Beast.
1 x Corsair CX 430W, CX Series 80+ Bronze, EPS12V v2.3, 80+
1 x 500GB WD Hard Disks, 5000AAKX, SATA 3, 16MB Buffer, 7,200 rpm, 8.9 ms

$868

+ Case (maybe a DVD-RW if you're short on USB ports🙂)

The graphics card is actually a bit weaker than an HD 6670...

Not everyone buys a card just to push its limits. Maybe someone’s just looking for a smooth gaming experience—something where both the hardware and the drivers actually play nice together.

In my book, Intel takes the lead there. I’ve gone through five or six Intel cards over the years and never once ran into driver issues... whereas with AMD, no matter how good the raw performance was, those drivers absolutely sucked the joy out of life. 😳

That was definitely my experience with Intel back in the day (around 2006–2010); I never dealt with endless BSODs. 😬

I haven't seen a Blue Screen of Death since I got this current one, which I've had for almost three years now. 😁

Should I go with the HD 7870 or the HD 7950 if I want smooth FPS? The HD 7950 has more VRAM, which might be useful, and it's sitting at about $767... since it's roughly five times more powerful than an HD 4770, you tell me 😁

Timothy Kim60 said:Look, what you're calling "junk" from $217 is basically the exact same stuff you'd find at Best Buy $333. I'm pretty sure 99% of games will run just fine on it. It's barely even slower than the 7850s they have sitting on shelves at Walmart $467 or Target ☕.

I think you might be overstating things a bit here 😬
.
The HD 7850 is way more powerful than the GTX 460, and it actually edges out the GTX 560 Ti slightly... 😉

You posted the exact same link twice... and honestly, that card is junk. If the other one is an Nvidia GT 520 or an HD 6450, neither is worth it. They're barely any better than your integrated graphics; you'd just be throwing money away...

Jeffrey Chavez6 said:That card is about 5 years old now and worth roughly $17. You're better off grabbing something like that 8800 mentioned above.

+1... what you linked is pretty much junk 😬

Just wondering... what kind of CPU and PSU are you running? Honestly, it might be hard to beat that 8800 GTS deal; it’s got some real muscle for more demanding games 😉

New cards from $83 are barely any better than basic integrated graphics, so they probably aren't worth the money at all...

restlessseal58 said:Does anyone have a recommendation for a GPU around $167? I need something that can actually handle modern games. Right now I'm running an Nvidia 7600, which I guess was pretty high-end back in the day 😁, so I'm looking to upgrade. My rig isn't anything special—just a 2.8 GHz dual-core with 4GB of RAM. This setup is honestly just a temporary fix for me, but I need something for now. Thanks!

Jeffrey Chavez6 said:I think I see the issue already. That FX series just isn't worth it—it's incredibly inefficient when you look at the power draw versus the actual performance. If you're leaning toward AMD, maybe grab an Athlon 740/750 k instead. Or, if you really need more muscle, you should probably look at some of the newer FXove, like the 8320.

But he actually linked the FX 6300, right? 😬
Hard to beat that CPU for under a hundred bucks... 🙂

graniteharbor85 said:He probably holds up just fine as long as he hasn't been pushing it too hard with overclocking or pairing it with high-end GPUs. It puts out 350W on the +12V rail, so I guess it shouldn't have any real trouble handling that combo mentioned above.

It might be a good idea to give it a quick blast with some compressed air to clear out the dust, assuming nobody’s actually touched it in all these years.

+1

It should hold up just fine, I guess. 😉

A new Radeon HD 7750 goes for about $100, and honestly, it pulls almost three times less power while being slightly faster than an old HD 5770 😛

I'm trying to wrap my head around how an Intel Core i7 could be $200, seeing as the AMD Ryzen beats it out in most scenarios and costs less than 😬

Is the supply just low? 🙂
