The World Cup kicks off in just over a month, so I figured we needed a prelude thread to hash out the who, what, where, and why.
For the first time ever, we’re looking at a host nation that’s never actually played in a World Cup and doesn't have a single household name on the roster. Plus, the tournament is hitting during late fall and Winter like never before.
The big spenders built all these shiny new stadiums that’ll probably sit empty after this, and they’ve even constructed entire cities from scratch. No nightlife, no local bars, nothing...
It’s going to be a totally surreal experience.

Who are the favorites? Any dark horses? And is Messi going to flop again, or will the GOAT finally pull off one last miracle?

And lastly, what’s the coverage going to look like on NPR? Are we going to get that same old guy with the belly, acting like he was watching the 1938 World Cup live at his local town hall? Or maybe some producer trying to hype up a new anchor?
Or—dare we hope—will we actually get some decent coverage with a real audience, some actual charisma, and people who actually know their stuff?

Russia needs more land? Please. They’re already a joke with barely three people per square mile. They could fit another two billion people in there without even breaking a sweat. Most of their territory is basically stuck in the Middle Ages, the vast majority of their population lives in absolute poverty, and their roads are a complete disaster... yet they still want to grab more land and more people to feed when they can't even manage what they have now.
So, according to them, Ukraine is just their California.

The fact is, Russia is basically an outcast now. No more Russian tourists, no more presence in international sports, no Russian clubs left in UEFA competitions... the economy, the UN, everything. They're just becoming irrelevant noise.

Look, I’m telling you, it’s junk. There is zero point in trying to support that ancient version of Android anymore; even if you move everything over via an SD card, the whole thing is going to be painfully slow. It’s just too old—I know, it feels stupid to toss it, but there's really no point.

Honestly, I couldn't care less. If the choice is between wiping out the entire world or letting Ukraine fall, I’ll take the global meltdown every single time. Ukraine has to fight for itself, even if it means the end of humanity. To hell with the world if we just sit back and let tyrants get whatever they want.

Noah Sanchez2 said:This is what a standard daily ration looks like for US soldiers.

An emergency diet kit from Amazon. Is this actually enough to get someone through a crisis?

Contains:

The US Army just beefed up their MREs. You get three full meals—breakfast, lunch, and dinner—each packed with a meat entree, canned veggies, biscuits, something sweet, and a beverage. They also threw in all the gear: cutlery, wet and dry wipes, a portable heater with fuel tablets, and wind/waterproof matches. It all comes in a waterproof bag with a handle and a zip lock seal. At 1700g, it’s a heavy, well-balanced kit designed to last a full day. Is it worth it? Probably. It's a solid, convenient way to stay fed on the move. Expiration date: 06/21 (NEW) Army Crackers 4/50 g The inventory list: Stew Beef (250g), Vegetable Stew (100g), Sausage Stuffing (100g), and Rice Porridge with Beef (250g). Includes a Beverage concentrate, Protein drink, fruit jam, and an Energy fruit bar. For the caffeine fix, there's Black Teo, instant Coffee (with sugar, salt, and pepper), and enough supplies for a portable heater. Toss in some Wind / Waterproof Matches, Wet Wipes, paper Napkins, Plastic Spoons, and a can opener. Seems complete? Expiration date - 06/2021

Here are the highlights:

About 9 ounces of beef.
A hundred grams of sausage. That it.
250 grams of beef stew with rice.
A 9-ounce bowl of Stew Beef.
A small bowl of vegetable stew. That's about it.
200 grams of cookies (I'm assuming that's the substitute for bread?)

A single day's worth of food—three meals total—weighs about 1.7kg. If we assume 300,000 people actually need moving, and they each get one of these packs daily... though it's just as likely they'd only see one every three days... well, let's be optimistic and say they get one per day.

So, let's do the math. 1.7kg times 300,000 equals 510,000kg of food. That’s 510 tons. If one truck carries 10 tons, you're looking at 51 trucks delivering food every single day along the front lines. How does that even work? 622 milesThrough snow, mud, and god-knows-what else. Just trying to handle the daily logistics for food alone is enough to give you a massive headache.

Right from the jump, until they start killing each other over scraps and eating themselves, the Russians have never actually cared about their soldiers' lives.
And Americans? This isn't even propaganda; they will do absolutely everything in their power to save a single soldier, while the Russians just sacrifice thousands without blinking.

Samuel Rodriguez52 said:I mean, who actually believes they’re only going to mobilize 300,000 people? Sure, that number might be written in the official proclamation, but in reality, it feels like the actual amount of Russians being mobilized could end up being way higher—maybe even reaching 1 or 2 million, or honestly, even 10 million. Since everyone has been lying about everything up to this point, I guess it’s hard to say who’s actually guaranteeing that they aren't just lying about this too, right?

And what are they even going to arm them with? They're already running low on gear. If they send more troops out, who's left to defend the entire Soviet Union's eastern flank?

Honestly, most modern Android tablets are pretty much useless as they are, and anything ten years old is straight-up junk. Even if you go through the hassle of flashing a custom ROM to get a newer version of Android, it’ll be so painfully slow that you'll just end up losing your mind. Just toss it in the trash; there's really nothing smart you can do with that crap.

Putin’s lost his mind and clearly doesn't care about anyone else, but even those generals have families and friends they actually give a damn about. They aren't going to just sit by while everyone they love gets wiped out. It looks like total chaos over there, and if mobilization actually kicks in, it'll be an absolute disaster. There is zero chance anyone from DC or New York is heading to a war zone. It's easy enough to draft people who don't have much to lose, but this? No way.

This reminds me of that scene from *Downfall* where Bruno Ganz absolutely nails it—screaming at his generals. It’s giving major "hiding in a bunker realizing everything is over" vibes.

restlessgull2 said:You guys have spent way too many pages and threads obsessing over nuclear retaliation, which honestly doesn't even reflect what's happening on the ground right now...

If Russia decides to escalate their military operations in Ukraine—beyond just throwing more boots on the ground—it’ll likely focus on crippling critical infrastructure. We're talking power grids, water supplies, bridges, railways, tunnels, viaducts, transit hubs... basically everything that keeps a society running. They'll probably lean heavily on strategic aviation, too. It’s a playbook we saw when the US hit Iraq or America...

It seems to me they're scrambling to build a legal framework to justify ramping up military aid against Russian forces in Ukraine. That's why there's this sudden rush to hold referendums and get everything tied up in legal knots. You have to remember, the Russian president is a lawyer by training...

And looking at the recent movements from both the Ukrainian and Russian militaries, along with all these shifting tactical wins and losses, I just don't see how the soldiers or the civilians in those devastated zones are supposed to settle in without basic utilities. Neither the Russians nor the Ukrainians can really focus on rebuilding vital energy infrastructure while the fighting is still actively going on...

Does Russia actually need a "legal framework" for this? A country that launched an invasion, committed massive atrocities, destroys civilian structures, and kills both civilians and POWs... they think they need a legal framework?🤔

What do you mean "dead Belarus"? They don't even have the strength to take over a local park; they’d run out of soldiers in two days.

Imagine how pathetic you have to be to start an unprovoked invasion, get absolutely wrecked, and then resort to nuclear threats because you're losing. It’s honestly disgusting.

Personally, I’d much rather see him face trial for working against Russia's interests and for those war crimes. Both him and his inner circle.
I know that sounds like science fiction, but whatever.

Same here. I’d love to see him squirming, but there's zero chance. That's just how things work in Russia—power shifts happen by eliminating whoever was in charge before.

Putin might just "suddenly" trip and fall soon. It’s how they handle things over there—much easier than dealing with a transition, a resignation, an election, or some messy trial. They just flip him out like they did with Stalin back in the day, and everyone pretends nothing happened.
