How to survive gym workouts with social anxiety? in Psychology & Therapy ·
darksurfer4 said:Look, I’m not trying to be discriminatory here, and I certainly don't mean to offend anyone, but we really need to have a serious conversation about this. Is it even remotely acceptable to allow someone to pursue a medical degree if they’ve been hospitalized multiple times, especially for extended periods? It just feels fundamentally unsafe. What happens if they have a sudden medical crisis right in the middle of a surgery? Or what if they experience some kind of episode and accidentally compromise an IV line or shut down equipment mid-procedure? We're talking about people's lives on the line.

Well, this isn't exactly training to be a fighter pilot, where you have to be in peak physical and mental condition and pass all those brutal elimination tests first. There are plenty of people working in healthcare, teaching, science, or even politics who deal with mental health issues. I guess it really just comes down to whether she feels she has the capacity to handle it, assuming she's managing things through psychotherapy and medication.

To me, that sounds like a total nightmare, so I can only imagine how much you're struggling right now. Was this really the career path you set out to pursue?

I'm with Azzura on this one. Nursing is an incredibly demanding and high-stress profession—it’s mentally taxing, and honestly, sometimes physically draining too. You’re dealing with a massive influx of people every single day, whether they are coworkers or patients. It isn't always pleasant or polite, either. You see it all. You really have to keep your cool.
We went from social anxiety straight to self-harm and suicidal thoughts. There’s clearly a lot going on here. At the very least, it might require a complete overhaul of your medication, and maybe even a total pivot in your career.

I mean, I honestly don't see any point in popping a Normabel before you even start your workout. It seems more logical—if you want my opinion—to just look into psychotherapy or perhaps an antidepressant instead.
Ultimately, you've got a career in nursing waiting for you down the road, which I suspect will be much more taxing and demanding than just hitting the gym.

Should we bring back lockdowns? in Coronavirus ·
A lockdown only stops the spread of the virus while it's actually in effect. Once you lift the restrictions—if we haven't reached sufficient immunity levels through infection or vaccination—the whole cycle just starts all over again.
In an epidemiological sense, I suppose a lockdown is only truly necessary when the healthcare system is being overwhelmed and there's a real risk of total collapse. That simply wasn't the case here.

Amanda White82 said:Is there any way to get an exercise stress test done without a COVID test, or is a negative result mandatory everywhere before they'll even see you?

I suppose I don't know for sure—I'm not a doctor, after all—but it seems logical that they'd require a negative test. I mean, just think about it; a stress test isn't exactly something you do while wearing a mask, so you're dealing with a massive amount of aerosols in that clinical setting.
Maybe it might be better to just opt for a Holter monitor instead? You could just run around for a few minutes and essentially get the same data as the stress test. It’s probably a more comprehensive look at things anyway—and I'm fairly certain it wouldn't require a COVID test.

In my opinion, this is a matter for the Supreme Court. People are being stripped of their right to work without even a two-thirds vote from Congress—which is the only body actually authorized to amend the Constitution.
Instead, we have this quasi-governmental entity calling itself a task force dictating everything to us.

Look, until you actually get the official word that you're in isolation, you aren't... I guess. You're free to move.

I’m not judging either, per se, but I wouldn’t say I’m feeling particularly empathetic about it.

Alcoholism is a tough pill to swallow.

Exactly. I actually had someone tell me—this person was literally on a waiting list for a liver transplant—that their liver issues were supposedly just from eating too much greasy fast food, and not from years and years of heavy drinking. It's a bit much, I suppose.

The thing is, I can go days, weeks, or even a whole month without touching a drop, but my real issue is that I tend to drink all by myself, mostly just because I'm bored or maybe it's just become one of those mindless habits, and once I actually get started, I just don't know how to pull the brakes, so almost every single time I end up drinking until I'm completely wasted...

What you’ve described there is pretty much a textbook case of binge drinking. Now, whether it’s just occasional intoxication or if you’ve already crossed into actual alcoholism—well, you aren't going to get that answer from a forum. But, honestly, the mere fact that you're worried about how much you're drinking, how often, and why you're doing it... in my opinion, that's enough reason to go ahead and talk to your family doctor about it.

Ugh. So, it’s an issue with the BB code instead of the URL. I suppose I’ll give that a shot.

There's plenty of variety, I suppose. 🙂

But, how do you actually get them into the post? Do you just... paste the URL? I'm using Reddit right now.

I suppose by "obsession," I mean this constant, nagging sensation—it’s like my head feels... off. There's this strange internal occurrence, where I can actually feel my brain. It feels like a balloon.
It’s similar to when you sprain your ankle; you're wearing a brace, so you can technically walk, but you're constantly hyper-aware of that joint—just watching it, making sure you don't aggravate the injury further.

Look, just go ahead and take the CAGE assessment—that'll give you your answer. It’s actually a solid tool; I believe they use it quite a bit in clinical settings and for actual scientific research studies.

I wouldn't really put it that way—I can still function and get everything done quite normally. It’s more like... I don't know how to describe it, maybe just a fixation in my head. If it starts turning into an actual headache, I have to take a pill immediately, otherwise—well, God help me.

Relying solely on coffee—it just doesn't make sense, I guess. You really need that coffee and water combo. Personally, I knock back a coffee first thing in the morning and then basically spend the rest of the day constantly sipping on water.
My symptoms usually manifest as either a headache or just this weird, foggy sensation in my head.

Sleep schedules and circadian rhythms in Health ·
I can only tell you what my doctor suggested for my insomnia—back before I was completely reliant on sleeping pills—and that was hitting some intense physical activity for about two hours right before bed. On Sunday nights, it’s usually biking, running, hitting the local sports complex, or heading to the gym once it opens. Then, I head straight to bed.

Sean Stewart said:Is there any way to actually view my official isolation order—you know, the actual paperwork? Is it posted somewhere on a portal like MyChart or something similar? To be honest, I didn't quite catch everything the doctor was saying regarding my isolation period; she gave me a date, but now I'm sitting here wondering if I'm cleared to head out on that specific day, or if I'm technically stuck indoors until midnight. Since it's right in the middle of the holiday season, I don't really have anyone to call—I'm sure the public health officials are absolutely swamped right now, and the last thing I want to do is bother them just to clarify whether I can step foot outside or not.

When my daughter received her decision regarding her IEP—it said, for instance, that the period runs from December 6th through the 15th, 2020, and then she can return to school on the 16th—it was pretty clear... I mean, it seems obvious that the final day mentioned is definitely included in that timeframe.
stormymaker242 said:I actually asked my doctor why they’re quoting twenty days. According to his explanation, Dad gets ten days, and then I get an additional ten days once his period ends because we share the same household... I know at least seven friends who were in this exact same situation and only received ten days, which is why I decided to ask. However, none of them are seeing the same doctor I am.

It’s all just... strange, I guess. A colleague of mine was just out on sick leave because her son caught COVID—they live under the same roof, obviously—and she ended up getting ten days off. But here is the thing—it feels a bit odd—her computer has been acting up since the very first day he started showing symptoms. Maybe there is some connection there? I don't know. It just seems a little suspicious.
