I actually think that’s what Vettel is missing—that certain "X factor."🤷
It feels like he doesn't quite have that magnetic quality that draws the crowds in the way some other drivers do..
☕That said, I can't deny he's a fantastic driver..
like someone already pointed out somewhere, he has all the charisma of a frozen squid...😁
so, basically none at all...
Michael Lee4 said:If it were really that simple, Webber could have locked up the championship much earlier last year instead of waiting until the final race to see how some random Russian driver performed.☕
Personally, I'm convinced that Webber—even if he wasn't quite a top-tier driver—would have taken the championship last year if he actually had the full support of his own team behind him...

As for the McLaren drivers not squeezing everything out of the car... I won't even go there. Qualifying and the first five laps in Singapore made that obvious. The only thing I don't get is why Webber can't find that same pace; I'm convinced their cars aren't even identical.
Well, obviously the cars aren't the same
Of course the mechanics are putting more effort into Vettel's car, working on it more, and he’s getting the better parts—(just look back at Silverstone last year, when they swapped the front wing from Webber's car onto Vettel's without him even knowing, leaving Webber with the older, inferior one)
Which is understandable, really... after all, Vettel is their lead driver, a two-time World Champion, his face is plastered on all the Red Bull promotional shots and advertisements, his name is on the merchandise... it's all quite predictable...

I’m dragging this topic out of hibernation just to say that Nirvana is an absolutely incredible band...
I haven't listened to them in forever—honestly, I'd almost forgotten about them—until I popped on a best-of compilation just now and those old tracks came flooding back. 🙏
Hearing things like There's No Other Way, Tender, Girls & Boys, For Tomorrow, and then wrapping it all up with Song 2—which, let's be honest, was practically made for a rager. 🙂

Congrats to Jenson Button 🙏
There were only two rain-soaked races at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and he walked away with the win both times... quite a feat 😁
Sebastian Vettel—just the usual, predictable stuff from him
Lewis Hamilton—honestly, I was just waiting for that head-to-head showdown between him and the track itself (kind of like what we saw at Silverstone)... he drove beautifully, but man, it’s incredible how one disastrously bad strategy call can just completely wreck a result
Fernando Alonso—didn't really blow me away, but hey, a podium is a podium
I'm with you on all counts
Watching him drive is such a treat... he is hands down the best when it comes to those one-on-one battles, that much is certain
Jenson Button is just such an intelligent driver... he might not have that raw, blistering pace that Lewis possesses, but he makes up for it with his tactical mind. He knows how to wait for the opening, how to read the track, the conditions, and the other drivers—which is exactly why he consistently shines when things get chaotic

analogpilot16 said:I feel for Lewis... that spin was on him, strictly speaking, but the team really let him down with those tactics. Still, he proved once again that when it comes to overtaking, he's in a league of his own—he's easily the best driver out there right now, a true 'racer.' He cleared out everyone in his way—Alonso, Mark Webber, Sebastian Vettel, and Jenson Button. It was a total masterclass. It's just a shame it might be too little, too late for this season

analogpilot16 said:Big congrats to Jenson Button, though I'd say he lacks that extra edge of aggression—that bit of extra gear. He seems to only snatch wins like this when everything aligns perfectly for him; otherwise, he tends to fade into the background

It’s funny you say that, because I actually think one of the greatest overtakes in Formula 1 history happened right here on this very track...
Anyway, fingers crossed for a good race—the last two have been pretty 👍

A while back, Jean Todt was actually looking to bring Kimi over to Ferrari—well before 2007.
I can't quite wrap my head around whether it was specifically 2001... it's a bit fuzzy.
In the end, though, Kimi ended up heading over to McLaren instead.
If I recall correctly, it was late 2001—that season Kimi was driving for Sauber, which used Ferrari engines, so everyone was constantly linking him to the Italian team...
Also, I think Todt mentioned at the end of 2004 that he'd love to see Kimi in a Ferrari seat—which, well, eventually happened three years later.

Austin Evans said:Mika Salo was actually brilliant during his time at Ferrari. If he’d stuck around, who knows which season someone might have "bought out" his contract... there's no telling what kind of success he could have brought to the team.
Don't go overboard here
Salo was just an average driver—nothing more, nothing less...
Austin Evans said:And if Mika Salo had such massive potential, why didn't he move into that full-time Ferrari seat in 2000 instead of Barrichello? It seems pretty obvious to anyone watching—Mika Salo wasn't some puppet driver. 😉
Mika Salo was absolutely a puppet driver...
That's exactly why they picked him up at Ferrari to fill in for Schumacher—to be Ferrari's little puppet. Even back at Hockenheim in '99, when he moved aside for Irvine... they brought him in specifically to play that role, and honestly, that's exactly what he did.
Even if he had stayed with Ferrari through 2000, he would've still been a puppet—just a number two driver... standing next to Schumacher, he wouldn't have stood a chance...

Roger Wright94 said:He definitely performed better than someone like Luca Badoer or Giancarlo Fisichella might have... but even then, it just wasn't enough. We're talking about a handful of points lost over five or six races. All I know for sure is that in one of them, he was right on the edge of taking second place from Eddie Irvine.😁.
Actually, he really should have taken the win at the '99 German Grand Prix—he had such a stellar race going... except his team radioed him at the end telling him to back off and let Eddie Irvine through.
It wasn't even a case of him nearly getting second; he actually dominated Eddie Irvine in that race... he was so much faster that Eddie actually handed him the trophy on the podium afterward.

What is there even to discuss about this...?
Man, what a snooze fest of a race... Honestly, it feels like we’re seeing more and more of these technical loopholes—these "Tilkedromas," if you will—and I suspect they'll only become more common in the future (well, at least as long as Bernie is still calling the shots)... It’s a bit disheartening when you realize the championship fight is basically a foregone conclusion. I mean, Sebastian Vettel is a world champion, plain and simple, and Red Bull is clearly the class of the field for the constructors' title right now... Since the winner seems to be a settled matter, I can only hope that the upcoming races offer something actually worth watching—you know, some real substance? I’m craving that kind of intensity we saw back in Barcelona and Canada, where the battle for the top spot went right down to the wire, full of aggressive overtakes and actual wheel-to-wheel drama on the track... And, of course, I'm still holding out hope for those maiden victories from Kobayashi and Sauber in the Mercedes... 😍)

It’s actually wild that all 24 drivers managed to cross the finish line
That’s how it should have gone down in China too, though I think someone over at Toro Rosso had a nightmare with their tires there...
Honestly, this year's cars are incredibly reliable—we aren't seeing those blown engines, gearbox failures, brake issues, or hydraulic meltdowns anymore... just the occasional KERS glitch or some annoying DRS issue where you can't get it to open, but even that is nothing compared to the old days
And there's almost zero contact on track. Everyone is just dancing around each other at the start because they know those DRS zones exist where you can basically "overtake"—well, I call it "DRS-ing," since it isn't a real pass—so nobody feels like risking a massive pileup right out of the gate
If you want proof of how ridiculous this track layout is, just look at the fact that we barely saw any actual overtaking via DRS at all
I’m really looking forward to Silverstone... hoping for some rain so Massa can channel his inner ballerina again, kind of like back in 2008. ☕
