Bread consumption habits in Health ·
Hey mistybear4, look, I appreciate you being self-critical here—it keeps us from having to go too hard on you—but honestly, that whole statement just doesn't make any sense...

"energy issues are also linked to calorie intake, and if we can get the same amount of energy from food that has fewer calories, then that's definitely the way to go... plus, a slice of bread is about 150 calories"

If a food item has more calories, it produces more energy.
Food with fewer calories can only produce less energy, it's physically impossible for it to be the same (that's literally why we call them "high-calorie" foods in the first place)

mistybear4 said:Look, I get it, but Sandra Hayes88 actually laid everything out perfectly in her own thread—like, she broke down every single type of carbohydrate possible—so he could have just read that and actually learned something, which would have kept him from making such a ridiculous statement in the first place, you know? ... I was just pointing out that he clearly missed the point (and maybe he should go back and give it another read) ... 😉

I really love your unique way of debating: basically just retyping exactly what I said and then agreeing with me. Real genius work there.
What the person at McDonald's is saying is spot on; it's not inherently unhealthy, but obviously, if you overdo it, you're asking for trouble. Go drink 10 liters of water and tell me if that's healthy.
By the way, I personally can't stand McDonald's so I don't eat there, but I don't eat kale either, so I'm not going to sit here preaching about how bad it is.

I especially loved that little gem, "it seems like nothing is clear to you."
Har! Har! Har! as Mataković would say. And just imagine who's actually saying it...
Anyway, buddy, Donatella and I are experts in the exact same field, so I don't even need to read what she wrote—I already know it, unlike a self-proclaimed expert like yourself. It’s because of people like you that I felt the need to repeat everything in a much simpler way, because for folks like you, repeating things a thousand times still isn't enough.

dustycanyon6 said:I think you’ve pretty much said it all... and really shown everyone what you're made of... You'd probably tell sick people, "Hey, just head over to McDonald's, you'll feel great once you shovel in a mountain of monosaccharide-filled junk." People are finally waking up to how bad sugar actually is, and here you are, "proving" your wrongheaded views by leaving out the most crucial facts. Just keep it up. 👎 I just hope nobody actually listens to you. 😉

dustycanyon6, honestly, your lack of education is just staggering. Let me spell it out for you: the carbohydrates used in standard flour are essentially the same stuff found in whole grain flour, yet you go off in some post claiming I'm telling sick people things they shouldn't hear and babbling about monosaccharides like you don't realize that most carbs—whether from wheat, fruit, or whole grains—are primarily composed of them in the first place.
And then Sandra Hayes88 goes ahead and copies a post from Donatella (who, by the way, I know personally) that I don't think Sandra Hayes88 understood one bit either.
Your body doesn't care if you get glucose from refined sugar, white flour, or an apple. Is that even clicking for you two? Yeah, sure, excess sugar turns into fat for energy storage, and then what? You get fat? Then eat less and move more. It's not rocket science.
White flour is just as healthy as any other flour; it's strictly a matter of quantity. You don't need to rely on bread for your vitamins and minerals when you can get them from plenty of other foods, so whether there's a little extra trace amount in the bread or not is completely irrelevant.
In whole grain bread, you have fiber that doesn't even digest—mostly cellulose, which, by the way, is also a glucose polymer just like starch or glycogen—so that bread actually has a lower caloric density, which makes you feel full because your stomach is physically stuffed, while providing less actual fuel to the system... it's basically what vets call "bulk feed," meaning it keeps you from getting overweight.
Talking about the "harmfulness" of wheat flour versus refined sugar is like talking about how dangerous water is just because someone drank 20 liters of it in a single day.
To wrap up this ridiculous debate: all the foods we're talking about are good and necessary, provided you use them in moderation.

Brown sugar is nothing more than a marketing myth; if you look at the ingredients, it's over 85% sucrose, and the rest is mostly just glucose and fructose (which are just breakdown products of sucrose anyway).
Molasses is about 50% sucrose, and the rest is just water and a tiny bit of solids like minerals or ash or whatever else you want to call it. You aren't gaining anything special from it that you couldn't find elsewhere.
🙂 🙂 🙂

dustycanyon6 said:White flour acts just like sugar—it spikes your insulin. Next thing you know, you’ll be telling me sugar is actually healthy, right? 😁 👎

Of course it's healthy, you absolute genius... honestly, it's like talking to a brick wall sometimes. Monosaccharides are the primary fuel source, meaning insulin exists specifically to shuttle those sugars into your cells because they're basically the fundamental building blocks of cellular nutrition. If you don't have sugar in your blood, you're literally starving... you're dying. Every single time you eat, your insulin levels go up. And yeah, any kind of flour is going to spike your insulin because they're all packed with polysaccharides that just break down into monosaccharides during digestion, which then flood your bloodstream and get pushed into your cells by insulin to be used for energy.

Go read Guyton's Physiology, dustycanyon6... please, I can't deal with this level of ignorance anymore.😉

dustycanyon6 said:That’s just not true. Honestly, bread is more harmful than healthy—wheat flour is basically junk, and they pack bread full of all sorts of random additives anyway. 😉 Besides, you can easily get your B vitamins from plenty of other sources.

Bread is bad for you????? Wheat flour is unhealthy????😲 😲

Peter Taylor63 said:hey, just a little heads-up... we only talk about Diet Coke in this thread, and honestly, if a single word doesn't have a direct connection to Diet Coke, you're asking for trouble. Watch out, or they'll crucify you just like they did to me... 🙄 These "scientists" can be pretty dangerous people to cross! *clap* *clap*

Look, you basically crucified yourself by dumping that massive pile of "knowledge" on us, and let's be real, these scientists are only a threat to people who live in ignorance... it’s totally natural that you see them as the enemy. 😁 😁 😉

Edward Turner27 said:I’m pretty sure a MASSIVE dose of Vitamin K (if I’ve got that right, though I could be mixing up my vitamins here) is given directly to help with blood clotting...

So, if you take way too much, it's supposed to cause clots, right?

I don't know if we're even on the same page here, and look, I'm not saying you can't get hypervitaminosis from Vitamin D or K, but those things are basically non-existent or present in such tiny amounts in something like Starbucks that only Max would know how anyone could overdose on something that isn't even in there...
What's the deal with E330 lemon acid? in Health ·
Max said:Citric acid isn't even the issue here... 😉 It’s more about how you can actually overdose on certain vitamins, especially the ones that aren't water-soluble.

Starbucks is total garbage filled with synthetic vitamins, plus dyes and all sorts of other junk that could trigger an allergic reaction.

The only thing that's garbage here is what's going on inside your head, Max, just a massive pile of accumulated ignorance... Seriously, please go out and actually educate yourself, read a book or something, maybe even start with that one website you mentioned. There is absolutely zero difference between a natural vitamin and a synthetic one because if there were, they wouldn't be defined by the exact same chemical formula. There's no difference between natural and synthetic CO2, and there's no difference when it comes to any specific substance obtained through isolation or synthesis.
How on earth are you supposed to overdose on Vitamin A, D, E, or K—the fat-soluble ones you're rambling about—just by drinking a Starbucks drink? How? Ooooh, tell me how?... You can't, that's how. Except for Max, I guess, because for him, anything is possible.

And you're only gaining weight because of Coca-Cola, no matter how you slice it.☕

Good grief, seriously, where on earth do people like you even come from... how can someone be overweight when they're drinking something with practically zero calories? A farm? Bulls? Better chemistry? Honestly, if I could actually follow this unique train of thought you've got going, I'd probably be famous by now...

fan:
Aspartame is one thing, cyclamate is another, and putting them together creates something else entirely. Where is that combination even found in Diet Coca-Cola? Maybe try pulling less stuff out of thin air and using some actual data instead, especially regarding that specific combo...

Here’s some reading material for anyone who thinks they’re too good for Coca-Cola...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coca-Co...-Cola_formula. Not to mention how absolutely wonderful it is that toddlers—we're talking two or three years old, kids who basically live on caffeine because their parents hit up McDonald's for a quick meal—are just sipping away on all that caffeine...

The site also mentions that most of the stuff you hear about Coca-Cola is just urban legends, mostly because I don't want to look like I'm cherry-picking facts just to make a point...

Studies have shown that regular soft drink users have a lower intake of calcium (which can contribute to osteoporosis), magnesium, ascorbic acid, riboflavin, and vitamin A.

http://www.newstarget.com/003228.html

Oh, give me a break!! Seriously?! Is coffee bad for you? Is whiskey bad? What about wine? Or beer? Just go ahead, hand one of those to a toddler, maybe a two or three-year-old, and let's see if we can actually decide whether Coca-Cola is "worse" than everything else on that list...
And regarding the second part, pay attention to the fact that it says *CAN*... 😉

I heard somewhere that you can actually use Coca-Cola to eat right through rust on a bolt or something... is that even legit?? Because if it is, we’re basically looking at a killer anti-corrosion hack right there. Forget WD-40... 😁

It works, sure, but honestly, plain old club soda is probably cheaper if you're trying to do the same thing.😉

dustycanyon6 said:But you don't actually lose weight from it. Not even just that, plenty of people drinking Diet Coca-Cola can't seem to drop a single pound. And now this whole "it's not toxic" thing... It's definitely bad for you—there's no debating that.

Oh, look at him go, acting like he hasn't read any of the previous posts... Where on earth are you getting these two claims from? First, the idea that a bunch of people drinking soda can't lose weight
b) and second, the claim that it's inherently harmful to your health.
Which specific ingredient is supposedly blocking weight loss for a hundred years, and which part exactly is the toxin?
I mean, are you just pulling these opinions out of thin air or what? Unbelievable...

Matthew Sullivan32 said:I mean, if someone is looking for an excuse to drink garbage, they’ll find every single piece of "scientific" 😉 evidence out there to support it... I have a medical professional in my house who thinks the exact opposite about all this stuff. Oh, and for what it's worth, I haven't dealt with heartburn since I quit drinking Coca-Cola a few years back. 🙂 As far as I'm concerned, Coca-Cola is probably the last thing anyone should be shoving down their throat, maybe after a massive meal, but honestly, I'd much rather have a glass of Dingac 😎

Look, you’re missing the point entirely... it’s not about whether you can hunt down some random study to justify drinking junk, it’s about whether any actual proof even exists. This whole thread started because people are obsessed with how dangerous Diet Coke is, and half these people acting like it's literal poison clearly don't know the first thing about biology, chemistry, or physiology... claiming Diet Coke is toxic is just scientifically wrong. And I'm not even talking about taste here. For instance, heavy fruit juice gives me terrible heartburn, but I'm not going to claim it's "toxic" just because it messes with my stomach. Or take fish—everyone knows it's healthy, but I think it's disgusting and won't touch it, but that doesn't make it a toxin. A lot of people are just attacking Diet Coke because they hate the taste, or worse, they just have a grudge against Americans and the US, and half these threads are basically just fueled by that spite...
By the way, I don't actually drink Coca-Cola products at all.😉 I'm not much of a wine guy either. I'm more into wheat beers or a dark stout, and when I'm thirsty, I'll just stick to tap water...😁

Matthew Sullivan32 said:I’m probably going to butcher the science here, but from what I remember, if you take a calcium chloride solution and mix it with phosphoric acid—I think that French guy Le Chatelier and his Principle had something to do with it... anyway—you basically end up with whatever it is Coca-Cola uses to eat away at your teeth. Ever since I quit drinking Coca-Cola (not that anyone has come along to prove me wrong, I still brush my teeth just as much as always), I haven't had a single cavity...

1. There's barely any phosphoric acid in actual Coca-Cola (it's not the same thing as dumping pure acid into a glass versus having a tiny bit of it in your mouth)
2. Your teeth are constantly being rinsed by saliva, which acts as a buffer against that acid
3. Coca-Cola doesn't stay in contact with your teeth long enough—it's like comparing holding your palm over a candle for half a second versus twenty seconds...
The bottom line: the impact on your teeth is negligible because the contact time between the acid and your enamel (which, by the way, isn't calcium chloride) is too short, the concentration of phosphoric acid is too low, and your saliva protects the enamel...

And honestly, I don't even want to waste my breath talking about how "this happened to me" or "then I felt better," because we all know how that goes... the conclusion is pretty much the same as this:
The last time I actually hit a parlay on a football game, we were in the middle of local elections, so I guess I'll just have to wait until the next election cycle comes around before I see any money from a bet again...

Jeremy Evans13 said:I mean, suggesting you just toss a chunk of meat or a tooth or some liver into a Coke and watch what happens is honestly pretty mindless... It’s actually the phosphoric acid that does all the heavy lifting when it comes to eating through stuff.

Look, I get where they're coming from, but phosphoric acid is just there as a preservative and there isn't much of it in there anyway. The real corrosive power comes from the carbonic acid—or if you ask the "geniuses" out there who apparently skipped high school chemistry entirely, it's just "that fizzy part"... which, according to some post we saw earlier, supposedly even has calories in it 😂 😂
God, I seriously wonder what kind of schools you people went to... though obviously, I'm not talking about you, Jeremy Evans13

Black Knights said:1. Look, I already said that Cole actually has some benefits and isn't just pure poison, you idiot.
2. Also, I didn't even bring up phosphates or CO2 or any of that stuff you're rambling about right now.

I’m strictly talking about cyclamate—which they still use, by the way—and aspartame. That's the whole reason I stick to regular Cole instead of Diet Coke.

Point number two isn't directed at you, deer, and as for point one, from what I can see, you haven't cited a single shred of data regarding whether this stuff is harmful or helpful... so basically, your entire stance is built on... absolutely nothing, both ways.

And this next part isn't aimed at you, deer.

"The mere fact that it doesn't have harmful ingredients in itself means absolutely nothing to me. It's actually not even the point. I've just stated my opinion and my stance on Coca-Cola, and whether someone chooses to drink it or not is entirely their own business."

I felt like I had to add this here. Just look at this absolute mountain of "wisdom"... She has an opinion, while simultaneously admitting she has zero clue what she's basing that opinion on. Incredible. And then she claims it doesn't even matter. An opinion is supposed to be the result of a process called thinking, which is fundamentally rooted in actual facts. Sometimes people get so incredibly smug claiming that whatever they spout is just an "opinion." Furthermore, it was pretty lovely how you admitted in your post that you don't know the first thing about chemistry or physiology (though it was pretty obvious anyway), but just keep in mind that sometimes personal experiences shouldn't be treated as scientific facts... you know, like those psychics or holistic healers and all that nonsense. When we're talking about health, we should probably stick to science...

Regarding that 30% thing, it’s actually a huge deal because my buddy works in the adult film industry, and apparently, it helps him perform better so he gets a bigger paycheck.
You might want to watch out and skip the Diet Coke, because if you follow his logic, you'll end up growing breasts instead of... well, something else. Then again, using that same logic, who needs bigger boobs? Only if you're trying to get into the adult industry, I guess. 😉 😉 😉

If you can't be bothered to read through the whole debate, just take my word for it... honestly, if you're going to drink soda, just stick to regular Coke. Besides, regular Coke actually has some perks too, it isn't just pure poison or whatever...

That's a crappy link, man. You really need to read the thread to the end because you'll see that those three guys are basing everything on wrong data and they're totally misinterpreting what's actually happening. Anyway, we already pretty much agreed that the only thing that's actually an issue is aspartame—since nobody uses cyclamate anymore anyway...
silentorca492, seriously, try leaving a piece of steak in some sparkling water—like Perrier or whatever the hell they call it now—and just watch and learn. Other than that, I think I already explained in my last post (ugh, all this chemistry stuff just to make us look stupid...) everything there is to know about phosphoric acid, and even more so regarding carbonic acid, which basically means when you swallow it, it acts like a BASE for your stomach...
😉 And it doesn't seem to me like people are gagging after they take a sip of Coca-Cola, and even if they do, once that CO2 comes out, there's way less acid involved because of how the balance shifts...

Ughhhhhh, why didn't I pay more attention in high school chemistry class, ughhhhhh, then I wouldn't look like such an idiot right now...🙂 🙂 😁 😉

Kyle Nelson2 said:you sound like Coca-Cola is paying you to run your mouth🙄

Look, what I wrote wasn't just some random nonsense pulled out of thin air, I was actually reading stuff in magazines and online and all that...

Now, maybe someone paid them to lie, who knows, but maybe they didn't...

I mean, have you ever noticed that weird, "pleasant" feeling on your teeth after you drink a Coca-Cola?

Nobody needs to pay you to talk nonsense, honestly, it's a genuine talent of yours—just a massive mess of half-truths, ignorance, and pure cluelessness. You don't have a clue about nutrition, or how the body works, or chemistry, or even how to present facts systematically... That "pleasant" feeling on your teeth is just from the CO2, which is in sparkling water too, and if I recall correctly, you weren't complaining about sparkling water. I don't want to waste anyone else's time, but I really have to address this brilliant line of reasoning where people claim they broke out in rashes and can't wash up after standing around... Try caramelizing sugar until it burns onto a pan and then try cleaning it with bleach, let's see how that goes.
BTW, I know a guy who claimed his junk grew by 30% after drinking 3 liters of Diet Coke, so clearly, Diet Coke increases size. There's your proof, according to your logic.
How much does phosphorus actually cause hyperactivity, versus how much is used as a preservative in Diet Coke? Phosphorus is a fundamental part of the main energy molecule in our bodies (ATP), and it's a component of cell membranes, proteins, bones, and so on... It's a key part of the most important buffer systems in circulation. (Oh, please, don't start talking about buffers, it's just chemistry, and we've always been terrible at understanding chemistry, so don't...) Aaaaah, my bad, we don't need facts from a Coca-Cola shill and wannabe chemist, no, we just need stories about rashes and pulling conclusions from half-baked info we barely understood in the first place. Toss in some anti-American sentiment and you've got the legendary American ignorance right there.
And now this genius wants to lecture me for questioning someone who is nothing but exclusionary in every single post. "It's poison," says the expert, without any data or actual facts, let alone knowing the definition of poison. "It's poison," he says, even though you won't find a toxic substance in Diet Coke in any meaningful amount. "It's poison," he says, while rambling about diabetes without understanding it, and "It's poison," he says, blathering about obesity which has nothing to do with Diet Coke. "It's poison," he claims, despite the fact that literally billions of people worldwide have been drinking it for over 30 years, not just here in the States, and they aren't showing any increase in diseases that could be linked to Diet Coke. Long live American ignorance and stupidity. Keep it up.👍

That’s a pretty oversimplified way of looking at it, honestly... I mean, even breakdown products from things we consider totally "normal," like amino acids or sugars, can be carcinogenic under the right circumstances, yet they don't just trigger cancer in everyone. Aspartame is perfectly fine in moderate amounts, and obviously, it isn't causing cell death via extreme excitement when you're sipping on a Diet Coke, because if it were, people would be dropping dead everywhere. For over thirty years, millions upon millions of people have been drinking it, and there's zero evidence of those supposed consequences, yet people still insist that everything in a Coca-Cola is pure poison. It's just not true, nothing more and nothing less...
It would be a real interesting experiment if someone just extracted every single plant compound from wormwood, concentrated them all into one shot, and then we could see if that doesn't cause cancer too. Same goes for beer, wine, whatever... plant extracts always contain some kind of dangerous substances if you look hard enough.
