Anyone still running Windows 7? in Software ·
Jonathan Wood5 said:Can someone tell me how to post a screenshot from that program—the one that scans disks—onto this forum?

You could just use the Snipping Tool in Windows to grab whatever part of the screen you want to show. (Maybe you already figured that out, though. :-)
Next, I guess you just head over to imgbb.com to upload the image. Once it's up, they'll give you a link you can just copy and paste straight into your post.
Pretty simple, really. 🙂

Why even bother touching that 100 MB System Reserved partition? It’s tiny.

If you really feel like you need to get rid of it, I guess you could just use a partitioning tool like Acronis Partition manager or maybe that free one, Easeus Partition master.
Easeus Partition master http://www.partition-tool.com/

If you're planning on doing a clean reinstall, Windows XP is going to ask you where you want to put things. I guess you could just wipe any partitions you don't need and set up a new one for the install. Just follow whatever prompts pop up while you're running the Windows XP setup.

George Taylor28 said:I've got this Windows 7 disc I'm testing out... After installing, it just activates itself without even asking for a password. I put it on a friend's laptop just so she could try it for a few days, but it didn't register... it says there's a 30-day trial period. What's the deal? It worked fine when I installed it on my own machines a couple of times. Any ideas?
Also, I boot up the PC and 1.22GB of RAM is already used up. Is that really that much? I guess I have some programs running, but I can't see them anywhere in Task Manager.

Looks like you missed the forum rules. 🙂 This isn't really the spot to ask about activating pirated software. 😬

Jeremy Fisher78 said:it's fine, thanks anyway. maybe someone else knows. i guess i kind of messed up, lol. if nothing works, i'll just reinstall everything, because looking at it like this is driving me crazy, haha 🙂

Maybe try using System Restore to roll things back to before you broke it.

is it a clone?

You pick the clone option under "multiple displays"—you can go with extend or "Duplicate this display." 🙂

I've got a projector hooked up via VGA, so I'm not totally sure how it behaves with an S-VHS cable, but it should be the same thing. I guess I'm banking on "should" being enough. 🙂

Control panel - Display - Adjusts resolution
should probably let you tweak the resolution for both monitors—like, including the TV too. image

I don't know, I feel like we all just struggle with "newness." It always seems like the old way was better, but I guess it’s just a matter of patience and getting used to things until they click. We'll probably find stuff in Windows 8 that bugs us because it's different from how it worked in Windows 7, and then we're just stuck in that same loop.
I'm with driftingmarlin70 on this one—if you aren't willing to adapt, you might as well just stick with XP. 🙂

Taylor Morales31 said:I haven't really had any issues working on this RTN setup over the last couple of weeks, except for three things that are driving me crazy. I can't get the WMP volume down in Tray, I can't move the taskbar to the bottom, and for some reason, Pictures and Fax Viewer open images in a window behind everything else instead of on top—I can't find an option to fix it anywhere. I guess it's just annoying having to remember where stuff moved. Also, just a heads up to my coworker: it looks like I've got an American version installed from an update because everything works fine, though I did have to rename "Music" in the Start menu since everything else uses capital letters.

Why can't you move the taskbar to the bottom? Where is it sitting right now?

Justin Davis75 said:Can someone help me out here? I heard you can just upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7 without losing any of the files on your HDD. Is that actually true, and is it pretty straightforward to do?

You can upgrade, but it might take hours depending on how fast your PC is and how much stuff you have on there. Plus, you never really know if it'll go smoothly. Most of the time it's fine, I guess, but there’s always that small chance things go sideways. 🙂

Taylor Morales31 said:Does anyone actually know how to move Windows Media Player down to the system tray like you could in Windows XP? I’m about to lose my mind here. Is that even possible anymore?👎

As far as I know, it’s probably not possible. 👎

James Rogers53 said:does anyone happen to know how to change the folder view permanently? I want my folders set to tiles and sorted in ascending order,
but Windows keeps acting like an idiot and resetting everything back to the old settings every single time!!! 😠😠

Shouldn't that be handled in the Control Panel under Folder Options - View - Apply to all folders (assuming you've already picked the view you want in File Explorer)?

Zachary Peterson33 said:I get this message right when I boot up Windows.
Looks like there's some kind of issue getting C:\windows\system32\sshnas.dll to start up. I guess it's just one of those glitches.

Looks like that specific module just won't show up. I guess it's acting up.
I just hit OK and everything I need disappears. What am I supposed to do here? Does anyone know which file is missing and how I can get it back?

Looks like you've got a Trojan. 🙂

I guess you can find those DLL files over at this link if you need them. Maybe it'll help fix whatever error you're seeing.

You might want to give this a read.

Check this out if you have a second: http://www.myantispyware.com/2009/12...jan-fakealert/

Maybe try running a scan with some antispyware software.

Haha... I think this thread went off the rails because people weren't really paying attention. copperhawk19 mentioned he doesn't even have a laptop; he’s just looking for a keyboard shortcut on a standard desktop to adjust the volume. He isn't using a media keyboard—just a basic one without any extra function keys like Play, Pause, or Mute. 🙂
I wish I could help him out, but I've never really messed around with that stuff... plus my keyboard has those multimedia keys that I mostly just ignore anyway. 😉 )

Here you go. here I see all the shortcuts listed for Windows 7, but I don't see anything for adjusting the volume.

There’s a script here, so copperhawk19, you down to play around with it?
I was looking at this old guide on setting up keyboard shortcuts for the taskbar, and I guess it’s still somewhat relevant if you're trying to speed things up in Windows. It basically walks you through using the Windows key plus a number to launch your pinned apps. Seems like a decent little trick to save a few clicks, though maybe it's just me being lazy.

Joseph Murphy7 said:I've got a Lenovo R61i running Windows XP Professional
It’s got a 1.5 GHz processor and 2 GB of RAM. I'm not sure about the rest since I picked it up from a buddy who brought it over from Germany—it was basically brand new at the time.
Does anyone know if this thing would handle Windows 7? Would it actually run okay?

Should be fine.
Anyone still running Windows 7? in Software ·
I wouldn't really recommend it if I were you. There's just not enough memory, so it probably won't run very well.
Maybe just grab this upgrade advisor for 7, and it'll give you the full rundown on what'll work and what won't.

Just install it and let the program do its thing.

I don't think doing a system restore from 15 days ago is really worth the hassle. It’ll just wipe out any programs you've added since then, but your files—docs, photos, music, videos, emails, whatever—should stay perfectly fine 🙂
Maybe one of those apps you installed over the last couple of weeks is what actually caused the issue in the first place.

Terry Booth45 said:Nothing really worked... I tried running that scf thing through the command prompt just like the guide said, but it didn't find a single error...

I guess if I pop in a Windows 7 DVD and try a reinstall over the current one, maybe that'll fix things... might clear up those errors..

If you just overwrite the existing installation, nothing crazy should happen, so you might as well give it a shot.
Just don't go formatting anything like driftingmarlin70 suggested 😬

Maybe try a system restore to a few days ago when everything was working fine?

Maybe give this a shot, might help.

Looks like something went sideways during the install. I’d probably just stick with the 32-bit version of Windows for now. If you don't mind, maybe try installing the 32-bit Windows 7 and see if it stops acting so sluggish.
Anyone still running Windows 7? in Software ·
Did you go with the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows? What kind of specs are we looking at?
