Sandra Ward said:I guess for someone who isn't tech-savvy like me, it’d just be easier to pay once for $667
and I also feel like they could charge a decent amount for those damn antivirus programs... just a one-time fee, set the price wherever they want, and whoever wants it, gets it. It beats this nonsense where I constantly have to upgrade stuff and whatnot. I'm just not into that. I don't care about IT stuff; my computer is just for college work, browsing, music, and movies. That's it. No room for tech experiments here.

and I think it would be fair if they tailored things for us too..

And I honestly don't get who has the right to tell Microsoft what they can include in THEIR own software?! What's the point? It's their OS, so why shouldn't they add whatever they want? Is it because of monopoly concerns? Most Americans use it, as far as I know... they'll stick with their programs because they're used to them. I don't know anyone using Linux or any other OS..

All in all, I think it's pretty stupid.. plus, I'm definitely not paying extra for an antivirus upgrade like this. They could have just bundled it and been a little less greedy.😉
Unless my computer dies, 😛 but by then it'll be too late anyway.. so yeah. Piracy and trials are my way going.😁

Anyway, what's that Microsoft Office like? And how does it differ from the others? - besides the price..
btw looks like I might just cave and reinstall that old version from '03.. I still have it, and there's no need to upgrade or pay more.😁 CD and Ecco 😁 soon they'll probably start charging us for air.😛

I gotta say, I don't really follow your logic.
Based on what you wrote, it sounds like stealing is fine and we shouldn't respect or pay for people's hard work.
I don't know how you'd feel if you made something and someone just took it without paying, after you put hours upon hours of work, stress, and money into it.😕 🤷
I'm not sure why there's this general mindset that copyright isn't something worth paying for!😕

Hmm... So you have to buy an antivirus license every single year? I guess there isn't really a one-time payment option then.
Also, Microsoft Office runs about $0.67 or even more depending on the version. I don't think customers would want to see their laptop price jump by $0.67 just because it comes bundled with Office.
The courts actually ordered Microsoft to stop bundling Internet Explorer with the Windows versions sold in Europe, let alone forcing their other software onto everyone.
Nowadays, more and more laptops are sold without Windows just to keep them cheap, and if you start adding all these programs yourself, you're basically hiking up the price by 🙂
If you want to skip the expensive Microsoft Office, you could always just use free OpenOffice. 🙂

Sandra Ward said:thanks 😁 so maybe this would work 😁
i guess i'll give it a shot 😁
hopefully it doesn't crash 😁

anyway i have genuine Windows and i don't get why i didn't get the full version... just a trial.. i guess they're just trying to squeeze more money out of us.. kind of like with Microsoft Office 😲 where you probably have to buy extra stuff too, ugh 😛

but hey, to the guy below... sorry, didn't realize asking for links was a no-go here xD on other forums we swap torrents and stuff all the time 😁
my bad!

It's because someone else made the product and wants to make a buck 🙂
Obviously you gotta pay for things, you can't just walk into a store and grab chocolate for free, right? 😬

Sandra Ward said:hey guys..

not trying to start a whole new thread here..
but I'm running Windows 7 .. and I got this Trend Micro trial thing as an antivirus.. it expires in like 2 days.. so if anyone happens to have a code to extend it.. maybe if that's even possible?!?!

or should I just uninstall it and download the trial again?!?!
or if you guys have a better idea 😁 this one was fine.. since I just downloaded everything 😁 from the web.. I don't really have much else to do since I don't know much about this stuff anyway 😁

I had Avast before.. but that expired 😢

My suggestion would be to just grab that trial, or just install Microsoft Security Essentials - it's free and does a solid job. It updates itself, too.

There are probably better AV solutions out there, but this one's free 🙂

placidcobra49 said:Hey, quick question—if I grab a Windows 7 Pro 64 bit OEM DVD from Amazon.com online, what am I actually getting?
Can I install this version of 7 on any PC, or is it just for one machine?
Thanks!!

It's only for one computer. You're basically just buying a single serial number, which is your license.
Just be careful to buy legitimate software, since there are tons of knockoffs floating around online.

I wasn't really talking about some "beast" of a machine, just a decent computer I can actually use—not for gaming, but for making a living. 🙂

PS: since you mentioned the GPU—I've got an old 512 MB one sitting in a drawer somewhere waiting to be installed... maybe one of these days. 🙂

I keep my files on a separate partition so that messy upgrades don't wreck my nerves or force me to rescue data using some other OS. I guess I just like messing around with different operating systems, and sometimes things don't go quite as planned.

My Windows 7 is totally stock, and I haven't had any issues with speed or functionality. I turned off taskbar grouping in my settings (takes maybe 30 seconds to do), so every window shows its label 🙂, and those thumbnails are actually pretty handy.

As for opening folders, they pop up almost instantly for me, so I'm not really sure what you're talking about.
If you aren't feeling Windows 7, I guess you could just stick with Windows XP until MS decides to pull the plug on support.
I'm running an HP machine with an Intel E5300 DualCore at 2.6 GHz, 4 GB of RAM, and integrated Intel GMA graphics, and it handles Photoshop and InDesign without any drama. Everything feels fast and stable. I'm happy with it. 🙂

Taylor Campbell4 said:Honestly, even that's faster than hunting down and installing everything—customizing all my apps, tweaking Windows, organizing folders exactly how I want them, drivers, etc. That stuff can easily eat up an entire day, maybe longer.
So, tell me, when your upgrade failed, what actually happened? What kind of mess were you dealing with? Was there any way to work around it or fix it?

Unfortunately, the upgrade just hung halfway through, and I was left with no choice but to format the C: drive. Everything went south... the FAT table got trashed and everything just collapsed.
That’s why I stick to clean installs. I've gotten pretty good at it, so a full reinstall plus setting up my apps, email, and all that small stuff usually takes me about 5 or 6 hours. 🙂

Taylor Campbell4 said:One more thing, and this applies to all Windows versions, but since I'm on W7 right now, I'll ask here... Upgrades. I've been using PCs forever, but I've only ever done an upgrade once—moving from 98 to XP—but back then, the 98 install was totally clean.
So, my question is: if I upgrade from W7 RC to W7 RTM, or any other kind of upgrade, will all my programs, settings, and folder structures across all partitions stay intact?

Everything should stay exactly the same 🙂 Though, in my experience, upgrades don't always go smoothly. I remember upgrading from WinXP to Vista and it took ages—maybe 4 or 5 hours because my drive was pretty cluttered with stuff. These days, I usually just prefer doing a clean install. 😬

Enterprise is basically a beefier version of something like Ultimate that you’d find in retail stores. You probably won't go wrong installing either one.
I'd personally suggest going with the Enterprise 32-bit version, just in case you run into driver issues on 64-bit Windows if you're running any older hardware. For instance, I have a Canon laser LBP-1120 printer that doesn't have 64-bit drivers, and I'd hate to toss a perfectly good printer that's been working great for me for years. 🙂

I stumbled upon a promo and activated my system for about ten bucks - Click here

That page sounds like a total bait for harvesting email addresses to send spam.🙂

If I’m going to look up info on Windows 7, I’ll stick to the official Microsoft pages

or just check out the US version

stormyhound29 said:I've been stuck for about a week now. I can't check if there's a new update because it just keeps throwing an error. The troubleshooter says it's some temporary network issue messing with Windows Update. Any idea how to fix this??

I guess you might have a Trojan or something. Maybe try running an antispyware scan to check it out.

Kevin Nelson said:Well, I finally got 7 installed myself. 😍

The install was super quick—probably as fast as it gets. I just couldn't get the partitions to behave how I wanted. I could delete them or shrink them, but increasing the size was a no-go. 🤷 Ended up fixing it after the fact using BlackBerry.

The Start menu feels a bit clunky to me since those icons don't pop out when you hover over them.

Also, does this thing actually have Aero like Vista did?

It definitely has Aero, assuming your graphics card can handle it. It's on by default. 🙂

Maybe one of those things you tried actually worked, it just needed a little time (or a reboot) to kick in. 👍 Glad the issue's sorted though.

Just try typing "windows desktop gadgets has stopped working" into Google and see what comes up.

One of the fixes might be this one, I guess:

I've got an Asus A7U laptop and just installed Windows 7 today, but the drivers on the CD aren't working. It didn't even auto-install the graphics or sound card drivers!!

From what I can tell on the Asus site, your laptop isn't officially listed as supporting Windows 7.
Maybe you could try using the Vista drivers? Most of them work fine with Windows 7. 🙂 Good luck!

I mean, with Windows XP, you run into issues because it lacks native SATA drivers, so it just won't recognize the drive, making a Windows installation impossible until you configure things manually. Windows 7 shouldn't be an issue since those drivers are built right in—plus, you mentioned needing to partition the drive anyway. It sounds like the real headache starts when you try copying the install files from the DVD to your Hard Disk Drive and everything starts erroring out. I'm pretty sure it's not a BIOS thing.
What specific error are you getting??
Maybe try posting the exact error message; that might help us figure out what's going on.

Gregory Ward78 said:I've scrolled through 76 pages and I'm too lazy to check if this was covered already, so here goes.

So, here's the deal: I put a new Hard Disk Drive in my PC and decided to just go ahead and install Windows 7. I pop in the disc, installation starts, I set up the partitions, but then it just hangs at 0% for a while before throwing a "file missing" error, basically acting like there's something wrong with the DVD. (It worked fine on other computers). Then I try a different disc, and when it hits the "read boot from CD" stage, it just sits there doing nothing. (Assuming the discs themselves are actually fine).
Since it's a new Hard Disk Drive, is there maybe something I need to tweak in the BIOS to get this working? That's the only thing that makes sense to me, I guess.

Any help would be appreciated.🙏

Honestly, it sounds like you might have an issue with the DVD drive itself.
Maybe try installing via a USB stick instead, if you've got a 4 GB one lying around.

Since you managed to set up the partitions on the Hard Disk Drive, the drive itself should be fine.

Any way to get rid of this? Thanks

1) Just switch the theme back to a standard Windows theme, or
2) try a system restore to a point before you installed the theme. 🙂

James Mitchell3 said:So I just got this new PC with Windows 7 Home Premium... but I'm thinking maybe I should switch to W7 Pro or even just go back to XP...

Now I'm wondering... since it's an Intel i5 with 4GB of RAM and an Nvidia GT230... would XP give me any trouble?

It's a work machine, so I really need it to be as stable and reliable as possible. Since Windows 7 won't stay around forever, I guess I'd appreciate if someone could lay out the actual benefits of sticking with W7 (forgetting the looks... the Yahoo widgets are fine by me).

Thanks...

I'd stick with Windows 7 and not go back to those old versions. It's fast, stable, and works great. Plus, it actually supports modern tech.
With Windows XP, you might run into some driver issues with certain hardware.
Instead of me listing everything, I guess it's best if you just use the newer Windows for about two weeks—you'll probably notice the perks yourself.
Personally, I love the little things, like how when you rename a file, it doesn't mess with the extension (the part after the dot, like .jpg or .exe).
Also, there's a button for New folder right on the toolbar in Windows Explorer when you need one.
And if you click an MP3 in Windows Explorer, all the song info (tags) shows up at the bottom, so you can edit them right there without needing some separate Tag & Rename software or digging through properties.
There's plenty more, but you'll see it once you start using it.
For what it's worth, Windows 7 hasn't crashed on me once, and I've been using it since Release Candidate 1. 🙂
One downside is that Windows Mail and Outlook Express aren't really there anymore; they're replaced by Windows Live Mail, which honestly isn't much of a replacement for Outlook Express in my book.

Windows 7 is excellent with drivers. It has tons of built-in support for common hardware, and if it doesn't have it, you can usually find it online easily, so it's unlikely anything will stay unrecognized.
The networking and file sharing are pretty solid too.
