Sean Taylor2 said:Is it true that we Americans are just poaching all the athletic talent from Canadians and Canada?
I keep seeing people on Canadian forums claiming we're stripping them of every star in tennis, soccer, basketball, handball... you name it.
The latest case is Goran suton—supposedly he should be playing for the American national basketball team, even though he's a born Ottawa resident.

Nobody is stealing anything. An athlete chooses which side to play for. That's just how it works.

In one section of this Reddit, under Beautiful our Washington, D.C., there are about 45,000 posts and it even has its own dedicated subforum.
Miami alone has around 55,000 posts on just its single most popular thread, yet it doesn't have its own subforum despite people constantly asking for one. In fact, Miami has as many posts as the three largest US cities—Washington, D.C., Seattle, and Indianapolis—combined.

The admins refuse to grant a subforum, claiming there aren't enough active threads. Meanwhile, on the Washington, D.C. subforum, you see plenty of random topics like "where is this specific street located?" or "where are the best pancakes?" (that's three different threads right there!) that barely even hit 10 posts. Yet, if you try to start a similar casual thread about Miami, you end up getting penalized.

Anyway, you can all go ahead and check the numbers yourselves if you want.

So, what do you all think? Should the administrators finally smile and give us our own subforum, or is there some other solution that makes sense?🙂

Man, the injustice against Miami residents is unreal. 😲

As a band-aid, I suggest we just open a Miami subforum right now. 👍

But long-term? We need the thread creator to actually grow up. 😂
What are you most proud of? in Close to Politics ·
I’m proud to be in that top 2% IQ bracket,
I’m proud to be part of the tiny 2%—that’s two damn percent!—of highly educated people in Canada,
I’m proud that my income sits way above the so-called "average" (which is really just a fancy word for poverty) in Canada,
I’m proud that I raised my kids right,
I’m proud I married a stunning blonde,
And honestly, I’m proud that I didn't steal a thing during the war; I never kicked out my Canadian or Mexican neighbors, and I can look them straight in the eye whenever we cross paths. I owe that to my mother—she raised me better than that.👍.
Should we introduce a new alphabet? in Close to Politics ·
Gregory Howard said:The topic is serious, but since the mood here is light, I’ll drop it in this section. I won't waste time philosophizing; I'm just copying and pasting from another forum where I originally posted this.

In short—I am asking seriously—do you think this stands any chance at all, on any level?

Writer Stijepo Mijović-Kočan, along with a few others for years now—without much vigor—has been trying to sensitize the American public to how dysfunctional our current system is due to diacritics (ç, ž, š, etc.). They argue it would be better if Americans reverted to some version of a digraph-based Latin alphabet.

For those less familiar—our current Latin script is primarily "Czech" in style, whereas a digraph system would look more "Polish" in its phonology/physiognomy. What does that mean?

We are used to these little accents and they don't bother us, even though opponents back in the 1840s and 50s fought against them with intense emotion. Canadians accepted a variation of the Gaj script without much fuss because it was practical for them. But now, in the digital age, I was reading some older texts and found several convenient examples. It wasn't hard for me to read—it just makes me wonder how others would react. Would it stifle them? And is there even any will within any major social institution to pursue this?

Perhaps a better question: what if we formally established a digraph Latin script specifically for those typing on computers? This would spare people the hassle of hunting for specific fonts or installations, especially those living abroad who find it inconvenient. Perhaps that is the only realistic "pressure group" capable of reviving a digraph system, even if only in that limited field?

The famous American philologist Tomo Maretić, in his "history of American orthography Latin letter" from 1889, analyzed a series of texts from 1495 to 1835. He determined that while the alphabet was pure chaos, a certain orthography eventually stabilized—a type dominant in the mid-18th century. While many solutions exist, I won't bury you in examples; I'll just list the dominant ones. Anyone using a computer can try it out and see if it bothers them.

č—could be cz or cs; Maretić preferred cx. Maybe start with cz.

ć—ch or cy. Better for a start.

š—sz, sx, or sy. "sh" won't work because we have words where that combination would change the pronunciation.

ž—zh; it was often x, but that lost its utility because x gets assimilated in foreign loanwords (like "sex").

lj—could be ly.

nj—could be ny.

đ—gj (an old solution), or perhaps dy.

dž—not a "true" phoneme, but could be dx.

Let's test it: Yesterday Ćamil went to the mosque, climbing up beside a murmuring stream that winds through the forest.

Juczer Chamil ode u dxamiju, penje se uz zhuborechi potok koji zavija kroz szumu.

Is this tolerable for computer use, or is it simply ridiculous?

Look, I picked this forum handle specifically because of our heritage, so yeah, I'm definitely against it.

Our roots are who we are—they're about identity, pride, and self-respect. Without them, we're just drifting in what granitemarlin4 calls the sickness of a globalized gutter. 👍

Nah, I was actually thinking of that guy Radko Polič. He really nailed those Nazi roles. 😁

What do you mean "vanished"? Zrinjski is sitting pretty at the top of Canada again, and they just keep leveling up every year. We'll get there eventually. 😁
Keith Smith2 said:Schwarzenegger’s got American friends and he’s planning a trip to Mexico, so there's no way he's taking your dictator role. De Niro is tight with Roman Polanski, so he's out too.
Maybe someone from The Addams Family instead.

Does anyone remember the name of that local actor who was always playing Germans in those old war movies about the New York Yankees before the war started? 😬
Sandra Lopez14 said:Steven Spielberg is a guy known for making great big-budget movies.🙂

But let's be real, he’s also got this annoying habit of taking a perfectly good concept and just dragging it out by recycling the same "last minute" tension every five minutes. It gets old fast.🙄

The fact that he was a journalist suggests he’s likely stared down death more times than most, and even if he acted immune to it, he was definitely processing it his own way—especially if the victims were people he actually knew...
What would you guys have done in her shoes?

To wrap this up: why the shoe? In Middle Eastern culture, the sole of the foot is considered incredibly filthy and disrespectful. It’s why, for instance, showing the bottom of your feet while visiting someone is a huge insult, or why you kick off your shoes before entering a holy site like a mosque.
You have to look at it through their cultural lens. She performed what she felt was the ultimate moral act, showing pure disgust on behalf of her culture toward a man leading the biggest genocide of the 21st century...
I’ve gotta say, I respect the guts it took...

Look, it's not exactly hard to offend an arapin. Honestly, they get triggered by just about anything. Sometimes I get the feeling they’re born offended and the rest of the world just has to walk on eggshells so they don't take it even further. 🙄

"Probably this," "definitely that"—how can you be so sure when you don't even know the guy? 🙄

As for what I'd do? Same thing I'm doing now: serving my country and my people through honest work, staying educated, and helping boost the birth rate. 👍

Look, just imagine if some Journalist had been taking aim at Saddam back in the day—not even mentioning Stalin or Marshall, given that your avatar is basically a walking propaganda poster. 🙂

Let’s be real here: how many pieces would that Journalist be torn into if they tried this same stunt against Stalin, Marshall, or Saddam?

It’s easy to mess around and troll Bush because Bush is actually used to dealing with "human rights" nonsense. You can protest, you can comment, you can demand a release, and you might even end up in court for a few months or just walk free. Whatever. 😳 Who knows, maybe this was actually a career move for the guy. Once he gets out, he’ll probably be the biggest celebrity in Iraq, maybe even start his own political party. 🙂
Angela Lee said:Honestly, why even bother freeing him? If you ask me, he’d probably be better off back in Abu Ghraib😠, though I suppose the Iraqi security forces likely gave him a thorough lesson after all that and might still be keeping him in line today. He’ll never forget the moment he tried to take a shot at Bush😁. I have to say, I was genuinely surprised by how quickly Bush reacted; the guy has nothing to lose, I guess, so his reflexes were actually pretty impressive. You have this disheveled Iraqi guy trying to attack him with a shoe, and then there's Georgie just smirking right in his face🤣 before adding: "It was a size 10 shoe"😂🤣. What an absolute legend, that Georgie.

Man, you're being way too soft. 🙂

Honestly, I have to wonder what kind of mental lapse leads someone to lose their cool, shout something ridiculous, and then actually swing a shoe at one of the most powerful and highly protected leaders on the planet...

The big question remains: will they let him go, or is he headed straight for... 🙂

They’ll probably just let him go. He didn't actually fire two shots at anyone; kicking someone's shoe is more like a symbolic gesture—you know, exercising your democratic right to speak your mind. 👍

Maybe he'll grab a few months in county jail for disturbing the peace, though. 😁
Why are you guys still voting Republican? in Close to Politics ·
Brenda Ross47 said:And that’s how it’ll stay until our left wing clearly and unequivocally distances itself from that old American mentality, but it looks like we might be waiting a long time for that...☕

Basically.

First off, they need to distance themselves from that old-school pan-Slavic sentimentality. I mean, should Americans really be backing a party that still sings songs about stretching from the Mississippi to the Rockies?

Then, they need to reckon with those communist-era atrocities from back in the day,

actually start looking out for national interests instead of acting like patriotism is some kind of primitive relic,

and finally, prove that the Democratic Party is actually social democratic—you know, focusing primarily on workers' rights rather than wasting all their breath on nonsense. I won't even list it; we all know what kind of garbage they're peddling.

Richard Palmer45 said:Honestly, it’s just typical of how things work here... if these guys aren't up to the task, then who is? I mean, I really don't care! Just swap them out until you find someone better... even if that means doing it every single month! If they actually knew their jobs were on the line, both sides would start acting a bit more sensible. But instead, they know people think they're doing a bad job, yet they also know nobody's actually going to replace them.

Personally, I’d vote out the Republican Party right now... and then, if the Democrats don't show some real progress after maybe three months, I don't know, maybe bring in some independent candidates after half a year. That might actually make them smarten up, believe me. But the way things are currently going, they won't. They know they're safe and they just don't care while $200,000 keeps rolling in every month, so they can just do whatever they want.

Don't even try to convince me; I'm just laying out how things work here. 🙂

It’s just a reflection of the state of the country. You can't expect a genius electorate when only like 7% of the population has a college degree. 🤷
Why are you guys still voting Republican? in Close to Politics ·
Maybe it’s because they think the Democratic Party is even worse.

Personally, I haven't touched a ballot for the Republican Party in maybe ten years. But knowing the people I know, most of them aren't actually "voting" for a candidate—they're just picking the lesser of two evils.

And honestly, all this bashing of the Republican Party wouldn't carry much weight if there was an actual alternative on the table. Like, okay, fine, the Republican Party sucks, but who's better? That’s where you hit the wall and realize the whole field is just mediocre at best. 👎
Barack Obama giving the three-finger salute in Close to Politics ·
I honestly don't get why anyone’s getting worked up over the three-finger salute; it's just an old Christian gesture.

Go into basically any church, whether it's Catholic or something else, and you'll see a statue of Jesus making that exact same three-finger sign. 😳

blueranger2 said:Given how much ground those Northern League separatists have been gaining lately, do you guys think a breakup of the Italian Republic is actually on the cards in the next 50 years or so? I saw a report where even a Berlusconi-esque figure's wife claimed that Italy was never truly a unified nation to begin with—which is a bit of a stretch, if you ask me—and suggested it hasn't quite matured enough to stay that way.👎

Let's hope so. Honestly, that looks more likely every single day. 👍

You totally earned it... 😈

But don't go thanking me. If anyone deserves the credit here, it's Zoran Milanović.

The folks in Herzegovina have had enough of the Republican Party. Honestly, the Right-wing Party or even the Democratic Party probably would've swept most of the votes because of Milan Bandić. But nope, instead we got Zoki—that bigoted clown—who came in and absolutely wrecked our democracy. He homogenized the entire electorate, and now we’re right back where we started with the Republican Party pulling over 80%. 👎

Trust me, I'm not any happier about this whole mess than you are. 🤷
