"You just can't stand the advertising industry," says skviki. Personally? I think his best bet might be to pack up, head out into the deep woods, and leave the rest of us to enjoy the finer things—like civilization and our modern information systems. 👍

I'm rocking over -5.00 diopters in both eyes—so yeah, I look pretty sharp in my glasses 😎 and, luckily, I’ve managed to dodge the draft entirely. I used to wear soft contact lenses back in the day, but I guess I just got a little lazy about the whole routine...

Oh, and I've got astigmatism to deal with too.

I haven't touched a single tonic water in about a year and a half—not since I finally picked up some Squiviki. Honestly, he's even been treating me to sodas lately! 😍

Ah, here we go! We’re all crossing our fingers that this one actually manages to outshine his directorial debut. Honestly, it sounds like a tall order when you think about it—almost impossible, really. Look, the director is a decent enough guy and he definitely has a clear vision, but let's be real—his take on *Jaws* didn't exactly hit the mark. Anyway, I'm going to go dig through the rest of the credits to see if there are any other big names involved...
Color and sizing? in Forum Help! ·

Once you strip out those extra spaces, it looks like this:
Type this if you want red text
Type this if you want larger font

Of course—feel free to play around with the colors and sizes however you like!

THANKS SO MUCH!!!

If I could jump in here—it’s just common sense that vinyl and digital media aren't going to sound identical. If we think about sound as physical air vibrations—essentially waves—it makes much more sense to capture those movements using an analog process. You take those air waves, turn them into electromagnetic waves via a microphone, and then record those waves onto magnetic media in an analog format. One could argue that when you start encoding—basically converting that analog signal into bits and bytes—you inevitably lose a bit of that "soul" or fidelity, primarily because the "translation" isn't a literal one (pardon my quotes there!).

This is usually where you see the classic divide between the old-school engineers and the new guard. It’s a well-known trope: digital recording is just a string of zeros and ones, whereas the old-school analog purists will tell you that magnetic tape actually deals with pluses, minuses, and zeros.

But let's look at the reality of modern production: most music today—especially electronic tracks—is born in entirely digital studios. In that context, does it even make sense to convert a digital signal back into analog? Personally, I don't think it does.

If you'll permit me to wrap this up, I’d say both methods have their own specific strengths and weaknesses. It really just comes down to what you need for the specific project at hand.

Forgive me if that sounded a bit basic—that's just how I wrap my head around it. 😉

As far as I can tell, man—not great. There was this one LP shop over in the Lower East Side that actually carried decent house and techno vinyl for DJing. Then you’ve got Kingston over on Broadway that sticks to reggae, dancehall, and that whole vibe. Everything else? Like I said—pretty underwhelming!

That being said, you can always fall back on the secondhand shops. You’re bound to stumble onto something good there, especially since some of them specialize almost exclusively in vinyl. There’s one way up near Central Park and another tucked away in Brooklyn—it won't cost you anything just to go digging around for a bit... 😉

Seven Samurai,
Samurai Champloo,
The Animatrix,
and so on.

Wait, where on earth did you find The Animatrix???

I’m a huge fan of anime, but The Animatrix is definitely a commercial American production...

Here are some recommendations: Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Oh My Goddess!, 2001: A Space Odyssey (from that thread about movies we can't remember the names of), the Furi kura series—and maybe Mononoke too—and of course, POKÉMON!!! 👍
Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou in Movies ·
Douglas Robinson12 said:Anderson is kind of like the Pixies. Every new movie he puts out feels just a tiny bit weaker than the last one—but since his debut was so incredibly good, even his subsequent stuff still holds up quite well. To be honest, though, this latest one is getting dangerously close to being his first truly mediocre effort. There’s just too much "style" and not enough "substance," paired with that trademark Anderson approach of being "ironically detached" from the plot and characters, which really overstayed its welcome this time around. In many ways, Anderson is similar to Tarantino—about 40% of the movie is just the stellar casting, and another 50% is built out of these meticulously constructed, reconstructed, and deconstructed pop culture references. Even Zissou himself isn't exactly a "real" character (much like how the Tenenbaums or Max from Rushmore weren't really fleshed out individuals)—he's more of a prototype, a sort of Jacques Cousteau type, an old-school filmmaker obsessed with "life under the sea," blended with the brilliant idea of having Bill Murray play him while wearing a Speedo in almost every other shot. Throw in some acoustic covers of Bowie's songs in Portuguese (specifically his best tracks from Hunky Dory, Ziggy, and Aladdin), Dafoe playing a German engineer who's been around longer than a bloodhound, Wilson playing Murray's "unknown" son (who apparently flies for Air Kentucky... right?!), Jeff Goldblum as the high-tech nemesis, and a real-life model of a ship that's only on screen for thirty seconds but likely ate up 50% of the budget—a classic Andersonian set piece—and you've got yourself a "weird shit" experience, aka just another Anderson film. He’s a bit like Altman, too... he has this knack for turning his own flaws into strengths. For instance, he doesn't really know how to direct action or physical comedy, but if you layer Search and Destroy by The Stooges over some loosely edited action, you end up with at least a solid comedy. Which, in all fairness, is exactly what this movie is. I went in skeptical, but the time actually flew by once I was in my seat.

stormycyclist13 said:I haven't seen it yet, but looking at that cast on the poster, I've got a feeling it's a comedy!!! 😕 Am I on the right track?

You’re kind of right—it is technically a comedy, but more of a specific breed, if you will... a "serious" comedy. You really have to see the Tenenbaums to understand what I mean, but in any case, if you're expecting slapstick gags, constant snarky insults, or some guy spilling coffee all over his chin, you're going to be disappointed.

This thing is top-tier satire!

This movie is absolute perfection—Murray is hands down the only choice to play Zissou. Wilson is decent enough, though he’s basically just leaning into that same vibe he had in Rushmore, which isn't quite the same as what Houston brought to the table, but hey, I'll take it. The soundtrack is killer, the jokes are totally unexpected, and let's be real—it’s definitely not a film for everyone.

I gave it a perfect ten on IMDb!

The life and work of Mel Gibson in Movies ·
Ah, a true local patriot! It’s a mistake to assume Mel Gibson is Australian—he’s actually American. He was born in the States, but his parents ended up fleeing to Australia—mostly because things were getting pretty intense during the Vietnam era, and they wanted to avoid the draft. His mother was American, though.

All in all, if Arnold can pull off being Governor, this guy might just make it to the White House—knock me dead!

Steven Spielberg is just a total hack—honestly, if you ask me, he’s the culprit behind everything wrong with modern Hollywood filmmaking!

Oh, you cosmic beings, guardians of the silver screen—please, strike him down with your lightning and thunder. We desperately need a fresh wave of talent!
