Iraq wins the CONCACAF Gold Cup in Soccer ·
That goal was just pure insanity, seriously, they absolutely hammered South Korea 3-2 to punch their ticket to the final🙏
how much is Saudi Arabia going to have to cough up to let them slide into the final?😬
I’d honestly love to see Iraq take the whole thing home, especially since they’ve got this Brazilian manager on the bench who’s only been in charge for like two months, if I’m remembering that right🙏
Iraq wins the CONCACAF Gold Cup in Soccer ·
Look, I know probably nobody—and I mean absolutely nobody—actually follows the CONCACAF Gold Cup, but I just couldn't sit here and keep this to myself without starting a thread.
This tournament is getting a massive shakeup because, for the first time ever, we're seeing Australia join the fray, and honestly, after what they did to everyone at the last World Cup, we all know exactly how much trouble they bring to the table. Then you've got Japan, who are basically staples at every World Cup, plus South Korea
, who—if my memory serves me right—played some pretty shady but incredibly effective football to snag that 4th place finish during the World Cup held in Japan and South Korea, even knocking out powerhouses like Spain and Italy along the way, so this isn't some casual little tournament.
In a field that intense, seeing a war-torn, completely devastated Iraq somehow fight their way all the way to the final is just wild, especially since you can tell every single one of these teams is taking this competition extremely seriously.🙏Seriously, mad respect to 🙏 🙏

aaaa....well, if that's the case, then alright

Club World Cup: World Club Champions in Soccer ·
Look, we aren't just talking about some random fluke or one-off upsets here, because if you actually look at the numbers, South Americans have walked away with that trophy more times than the European clubs have, which honestly feels pretty wild when you think about it.
Who is the best manager in Europe? in Soccer ·
robybaggio said:What can anyone even say about his resume? He took a single Porto side, totally devoid of any massive superstars, and somehow pulled off back-to-back UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup titles, and then Chelsea comes along and grabs the crown after what feels like forever. And he’s just kept up that exact same pace this year too.

When you look at those kinds of results, he’s basically playing in the same league as Benitez, though personally, I still have him sitting at number three on my list.
Mourinho...
2 times champion of Portugal
1 time champion of England
1 UEFA Cup, Porto
1 Champions League, Porto
Benitez
2 times champion of Spain, Valencia
1 UEFA Cup, Valencia
1 Champions League, Liverpool
Capello
6 times champion of Italy, Milan, Roma, Juventus
1 time champion of Spain, Real Madrid
1 time champion of Europe, Milan

if Mourinho keeps moving at this speed he might actually catch up to Capello... but until then, he can just spend his time polishing shoes and eating grits.😬

I’d honestly put Fabio Capello ahead of José Mourinho, who seems to be everyone's favorite pick on this forum, and I’d probably slot Rafael Benítez right behind him as the runner-up too. That Portuguese person is definitely impressive in certain ways, but he still has a massive amount of growing up to do if he ever wants to actually match the kind of results one single Fabio Capello could pull off effortlessly.

Look, having a silver medal from the Olympics doesn't suddenly turn you into some kind of super-human or make you a more valuable member of society or whatever.
The reality is that like 70% of Americans couldn't care less about any specific sport, and honestly, probably 99% of people don't give a single damn about swimming.

😂
Are you some kind of old-school pioneer?
I gotta say, your post is giving me major flashbacks to those old communist days when everyone was supposedly "equal" and stuff like that.

Look, why don't you and Duje go try and outbid everyone else for some commercial real estate down in San Francisco and then we can talk about what's actually "just in your head."
I mean, unless your old man happens to be Sanader, I guess I might be wrong about that one.

I just really hope the government doesn't try to make us and you equal to him when it comes to our rights in this country!!

That guy is always going to have more clout than you or me in America, whether he’s competing for Qatar or the US, simply because he’s an elite athlete and because he snagged that silver medal at the Athens Olympics for the US.
As for Janica, Ivica, or Gordon, I’ve never heard of any country offering them something like $1,200,000 a year, so all we can do is sit here and wonder what they would’ve done with such a totally immoral offer. Personally, I believe Janica would smoothly turn it down today, but if that kind of money had been on the table seven or eight years ago back when she didn't have any sponsors, I think the US government would have given that option some VERY serious thought.

It's wild because the other day I'm watching an American guy on ESPN playing darts and this dude is absolutely crushing it!! Nobody had ever heard of him before, but the guy is a total beast at darts and claims he’s making enough money to cover all his bills and still have a little left over, though it's not like he's rolling in it or anything!! Why do you think he didn't just take the money and run???

Qatar offered the American champion $1,200,000 a year if he agrees to take Qatari citizenship and competes in the 2008 Olympics under the Qatari flag.

skeptik said:The real thing here is that when you’re actually struggling just to keep your head above water, it becomes a lot easier to see that some people's bank accounts matter way more than some abstract sense of national identity. People who obsess over being "patriotic" more than they care about their own wallets usually fall into one of two camps: either they don't have any real existential problems themselves, or they're just blissfully unaware of them because someone else is stepping up to handle the heavy lifting, basically smoothing out the edges of reality so they can sit back and fight those lofty, high-minded battles for "higher ideals" without ever having to worry about where their next meal is coming from.

Thanks for stepping in and breaking it down for him on my behalf, because I definitely wanted to add my two cents to what you were saying. Honestly, looking at the situation, I’m pretty sure we're dealing with that second group you mentioned in your post, you know? I’d bet anything that like 90% of the people posting on this forum are still stuck in the student grind or finishing up some degree, just coasting along while their parents foot the bill for everything. It’s basically that phase where life is still mostly made up of pure idealism and big dreams before reality actually hits you. Not that there's anything wrong with that, though—it's a fine way to live.

The poll results over on the main board—we're looking at 7,400 votes so far—show that 59% of people actually think Duje's move was totally reasonable!
It’s honestly not surprising to me, because I’d bet most of those folks are just regular people dealing with real-world survival issues every single day.
It really feels like every self-righteous moralist in America is suddenly migrating over to this subforum right now. 😁

Man with a plan said:placidcanyon16, that is total bullshit. I personally know at least ten top-tier tennis players who went off to get their degrees in the States. Back in '95, I actually had offers from two different universities, but I decided to stay put and finish my degree here. Trust me when I say that getting your credentials recognized is just some technical paperwork you sort out if you actually have the drive to do it, so using that as some kind of leverage to hold people hostage... man, just give me a break.
If someone is seriously claiming that diploma recognition is a reason to stay abroad, then things have truly hit rock bottom.
Look, people, this guy is acting like he’s picking between two different country clubs! It’s pathetic how Charles is basically begging a massive superstar to stick around in America. I wrote about this a while back, and I'll say it again:😁 this swimmer is an incredible athlete with a massive career ahead of him—I really believe that—but as a human being, he’s just a complete jerk.
If my memory serves, even Gordan Kožulj finished his studies in the US. So I don't see anyone talking about special privileges or anything like that.
The guy is a loser, plain and simple. Honestly, the Federation would be much smarter if they took that $400,000—if I'm remembering their offer correctly—and invested it into developing young swimmers instead.
Our boy Duke will take care of himself, though; he knows how to play the game. Just think back to how he practically threw away that relay semifinal in Athens just so he could stay fresh for his own individual final...
So many talented young athletes are falling through the cracks because they lack the funding to grow and succeed, yet we’re wasting everyone's time, money, and effort within the entire Federation on one selfish idiot.
And please, don't let anyone start coming to his defense now.
THESE ARE THE KINDS OF THINGS THAT DRIVE ME CRAZY!!!😠 😠 😠

Who is actually wasting time or money? Do you honestly believe in that $400,000 offer? Where do you live, man? This is America; you know as well as I do that you aren't seeing that money anytime soon. It's just the higher-ups in the Federation making up fake offers like $400,000 to save face, and I can't believe people actually swallow this crap and trust these bureaucrats.
From what I've read in The New York Times, he's actually looking at something closer to $1,200,000 per season! I'd tell him to his face he's a moron if he didn't take that deal!
And all those comments above about diplomas and building a career here... what a joke. Our country is struggling, nobody can find decent work, but suddenly when it comes to John Doe, everything is perfect and America becomes this land of opportunity where every young, talented person has a bright future. It is hypocritical to the extreme.
Go for it, Duke!
Raul might be leaving Real Madrid in Soccer ·
Ronaldo is honestly just way too big for Inter Miami.
Raul might be leaving Real Madrid in Soccer ·
So, Ronaldo didn't actually finish as the second top scorer in the league, which is wild because Forlan and Torres both ended up ahead of him along with Oliveira.
Regarding Raul, honestly, I think he’s becoming this massive headache for everyone at Real Madrid, and if you ask me, the front office basically views him as a liability at this point, though personally, I still feel like he belongs in the starting lineup, it's just that management sees things through a completely different lens, and since his form has dipped lately, it's become such a mess because even though he's the captain and basically the golden boy of Spanish soccer, you can't just toss him away, you know? It's not like you can just put him on the trade block without making a huge scene, plus while Owen was putting up some decent numbers, he mostly did it coming off the bench, and whenever he actually got a shot at starting, he just couldn't quite deliver, so he really failed to capitalize on the chances he was given, and look, when you're playing alongside someone like Raul at Real Madrid, you absolutely have to make every single opportunity count.
At the end of the day, if I had to pick between Owen and Raul, I'm going with Raul every single time, and as for Ronaldo, man, that guy is just an alien from another planet, there's zero debate there, but in my opinion, the midfield isn't quite clicking with him, so the strikers are the ones really feeling the pressure.
Thoughts on the Spanish national team? in Soccer ·
frozentiger6 said:Look, man, this whole thread is about the Spanish national team, 😉 but I’m specifically talking about Raúl playing for them.

Raúl was absolutely incredible during that World Cup run, like he was basically carrying the entire squad on his back until they ran into Korea...
The national team just feels off lately, they seem kind of sluggish and uninspired, and honestly, I haven't got a clue why, but yeah, they're struggling, though I still think they'll stumble into a decent result eventually, if nothing else, just based on the law of large numbers.😁

frozentiger6 said:Guys like Raúl and his crowd are just flash-in-the-pan players, honestly. They totally lack that championship mindset.

Don't you dare say Raúl doesn't have a winning mentality because it's actually the exact opposite, he’s got incredible skill, sure, but what really sets him apart from everyone else is that drive to win, which is something he definitely possesses in spades.
