Man, they’ll bleed you dry with interest until $1,000 turns into $100,000 overnight.😁
I'd much rather just have the Supreme Court rule that I'm broke and let me pay it back in chunks. They'll pass it—pretty sure they always do. At least with the crowd I hang out with, yeah, it's totally doable.🙂

driftingbadger97 said:1. So basically, you're recommending doing exactly what you didn't do 😍. Great. I don't know, I think my eight-day window just closed and now I'm stuck with it. I'm not paying. I'm a college student; what am I supposed to do if I didn't have my ID ready? It shouldn't matter. If all students are entitled to free transit, then showing a student ID should be enough without all this extra bureaucratic nonsense 😠
.
2. Mine happened six months ago and nothing yet. I'm from rural Pennsylvania... I don't know how fast things move out here 🤷 😍 isn't $133?

  1. Not really. From what I gather, that rule is for full-time students living right here in New York City. By that logic, I could probably ride for free too even though I have zero connection to NYC. 😁
And seriously, I don't get why you're making such a huge deal about getting that ID when it's literally free. 😁 Look, you aren't the first person to get slapped with a fine when you actually had a right to a free pass. 😬
  2. I think the fine is like $300, but honestly, I have no clue. Just check. 😉

driftingbadger97 said:Got two questions for you guys: 😁

* First, about this fine for riding the bus without a ticket... it was like twenty bucks, and I have 8 days to settle it. 🤔 Technically, that gives me about 4 more days before it's overdue, but 😍 ... honestly, I just really don't feel like paying it. 😁 Back when I was a freshman in college, early on before I even had my student ID, I caught a fine too. But 🤷 nothing ever came of it, luckily. Some classmates told me there's a statute of limitations after two years.
So, I’m wondering how much time actually passes before they come looking, and what kind of trouble I'd actually be in if I skip out on this 😉 since I still have 4 days left. Any advice? Bring it on. 😉
(Sorry if this is a stupid question)

* Second question: About six months ago, the police pulled me over. I didn't have my driver's license OR my ID on me at the time. 😲 (It was one of those days where I grabbed the wrong bag when I headed out 🙄). Since then, there hasn't been a single word from them. When should I realistically expect a phone call, a summons, or a bill showing up at my door? 🤷

And a little bonus question:
* To get my high school diploma certified at my old SCHOOL, do I absolutely have to bring the original physical diploma, or can I get it done without it? You know, the whole official packet containing the diploma plus the four years of transcripts that costs... $20?

  1. The statute was 2 years, now it's 4. And the guys running the local transit authority are way too aggressive (I swear, they'll hunt you down 😍) for this stuff to just vanish. You can pay it (which I suggest), or you can mess around with the court system like I did 😁 But look, I'm from Chicago, so I'm gonna give them hell 😍
I've got about ~43 months left until it's gone 😁
  2. No clue. One friend of mine got hit with the bill after 5 days, another waited 3 months, and one guy never heard a thing. It totally depends on the cops, depends on the courts, and nobody is calling you—they're just gonna mail the bill to your house. I think $100 it's all up in the air 🤷

Man, I thought they showed up after two years. I don't know, I really don't want to overthink this whole thing, so maybe I'll just end up paying it right away. But then again, even though I know I messed up, I'd love to lower that fine since I'm just a high school grad about to head off to college, and money isn't exactly flowing in right now. It’s funny, actually—a friend of mine got caught in the exact same situation just a week ago and got the same fine, so I think I'll just watch how his case plays out first and then try to figure out my move...

By the way, roughly how long does it take for the bill to arrive in the mail?

It’s all the same crap to me. Honestly, they’re just extra sensitive when it comes to booze...

Jack Kelly I can't even deal with this right now. Seriously. Someone just said:
Man, I honestly thought I wouldn’t have to deal with this for another two years. I don't even know, I'm not trying to drag this whole thing out forever, so I might just bite the bullet and pay the fine right now. But then again, look—I get it, I messed up, I know I'm guilty. Still, I'd really love to get that penalty lowered if possible. I'm just a high school grad about to head off to college, and let's be real, my bank account is looking pretty pathetic right now.

So, just how long am I gonna be sitting around waiting for that payment slip to show up in my mailbox? Any idea when I can actually expect it?

It went from two to four. Just like that. Boom.
Look, even if you’re playing your absolute best, you’re still looking at dropping that down to maybe 250—at most.$100 I honestly doubt any judge is gonna go easy on you and hand down anything less than the max. And don't even get me started on the legal fees—you're looking at another hundred bucks just thrown straight down the drain for court costs. Total joke.$67So, there's basically zero way for you to turn a profit here. Period.🤷 I don't know, man. You decide.

Look, it all depends on where you live, how slammed the local District Court is, and how much of a backlog they're dealing with. There's no way to give you a precise timeline—it’s anyone's guess.😉

Before I dive into what happened, I just wanted to say that I’ve been scouring the forums looking for anything similar to my situation, but I haven't been able to find a single case like this. So, sorry if there’s already a thread about this somewhere and I missed it...

Anyway, here's the deal... I got pulled over by the cops late at night while I was out on my bike, and turns out I was drunk. My BAC was 0.03. The officer told me the penalty would be $167, and then he handed me an alcohol breathalyzer test report. I've honestly never been in any kind of trouble before, so I guess any advice on what I'm looking at next would be really helpful. Is there even a chance that something like this could hit a statute of limitations? I'm asking because a few people have told me that sometimes you don't even get sent a fine, or maybe they send it after a crazy long time...

Thanks in advance for any help you can give...

Give me a break, stop lying to me😁 Every other damn post on here follows this exact same script😉

Statute of limitations is real and it hits at 4 years, so don't count on it, man. Either pay the fine or get to court and try to fight for a reduction (use the "I have zero income," "first offense," or "financial hardship" excuses... Just keep in mind you'll definitely be stuck with the court costs too $33)

Steven Reed said:Just for my own information—what’s the standard fine for parking on a sidewalk these days?
So, I mentioned previously that the city tow truck snatched my car over in Brooklyn because they were clearing the streets for the Yankees-Red Sox game. They slapped me with a bill at $167, which I contested. Well, yesterday I received a lovely response from the police stating that while I don't have to pay the towing fee, they'll be sending over a citation for the sidewalk parking 😠
Roughly how much are we talking about here?????

Wait, I don't get this at all.
Usually, the police just "void" a parking ticket if it's your only one in a year (that used to be the rule, anyway—I don't know what their system is now since they change the rules every five minutes). But you definitely still have to pay the tow truck, because you're paying for their actual labor.

It makes zero sense to me how it could be the other way around. So, what, the tow truck is just giving you free rides around town now?

Damn, they train that kind of strictness in San Francisco too... I have to look three times before I even move an inch.😠

Look, I totally get punishing idiots who force everyone else to slam on their brakes, slow down, or swerve around them. That's fair. But punishing people just because they took advantage of a clear road when there aren't any other cars around? That's just stupid. But hey, what can you do? Some cop just looks you in the eye and tells you: "It's the law, and you gotta follow it!"🙏

(I was near Lincoln Center, walked out of the dorms, and headed toward the bridge). I cross the street just like ten other people ahead of me, and suddenly, out of nowhere, these two guys in blue shirts pop up :-). I try explaining that I'm just a college student and I'm totally broke... they ask for my ID, scribble some stuff on a little notepad, and tell me everything will be fine... but nope, it's not fine :-)
Is there any actual chance I can get out of paying this? An appeal or something?

  1. Slim chance.😁
  2. Write something if you can actually draft up something smart😁 But don't count on the statute of limitations kicking in until like 2012.😁

That’s $100 if I remember right? Honestly, I’d rather just find a way to cough up those $100 than deal with the headache of a courtroom battle. I know plenty of people around here who went to court over a measly $100$167. Once you factor in legal fees and court costs, even if everyone thinks the judge lowered the fine, they end up paying the full amount anyway—if not more...

I was rushing to a lecture today and hunting for a spot. My luck hit rock bottom when I spotted an open space in a regular lot—not on the street, where it’s always sketchy—so I scrambled to grab a ticket, paid for the hour I thought I'd be there, tossed it in the car, and bolted toward my class since I was already running late. I get back a little later than planned, and what do you know? My car is gone.
Towed by the city!
Once I actually took a good look around, I realized it was a handicap spot.
But the yellow paint on the ground was so faded that from my driver's side, there was zero chance I would've noticed it. There were two other cars parked in similar spots nearby, so I didn't see anything unusual there either. Since my spot was all the way on the left and I was in such a rush, I didn't look back much and completely missed the sign on the far right with the big "P" and the tiny wheelchair icon.
I paid the tow fee, but now $167...I really want to contest this, because... there is absolutely no way I intended to park in a handicap zone. I wouldn't dream of doing that!
The markings were just so poor that I'm not going to be a fool and just eat this fine... it makes no sense!
If I had seen it and ignored it, that would be one thing, but this? What am I supposed to do!?!?
What should I put in my appeal!?!
Please help me!!!😢

You called it. You predicted the sign, you saw that yellow-marked spot coming, and you even nailed that massive yellow "P" painted on the ground. And now? Now you’re too stubborn to just be smart about it and actually pay up!😁

If you actually send in a complaint like that, they’ll probably just go ahead and revoke your license too.😁
Just get the lipo and call it a day. Honestly, the chances of this actually working are zero. Period.😉

That’s gotta be in my favor, right? But even so, four years of these tickets piling up... it's gonna be a mess.

But seriously, I wasn't even in the wrong this time. From where they were sitting, there was no way they could see what was happening 500 yards back when they caught me on camera. I was stuck behind two pickups, seventy cars deep, and once the guys in the right lane sped past, I swerved to pass them and immediately merged back left... Barely made it back into my lane before this guy starts waving his baton at me, and he actually let the first car from the right lane go!!!! Now if I try to explain that in court? Who’s actually going to believe me? 😢

Yeah, it's in your favor if they don't show up, because if they do, there's a 99% chance you're getting hit with a fine.🙂
And if they don't show up, maybe you've got a 70% shot, damn it.😁

The story sounds fine, but you'd actually have to prove it, and I highly doubt you've got video footage or witnesses lying around...
Better off just going with the "I can't afford it, I'm unemployed, blah blah blah" routine... if the judge buys it and cuts the fine by like 50%, just pay it and call it a day.

Good grief, four years??? What if I'm sick on the day of the hearing? Do they just issue a death warrant?

vividsailor92 said:And if the first hearing gets pushed back because of, say, someone getting sick, how long until they schedule the second one?

The first time I called the court, I told them I had classes at college. They told me it was fine and didn't need any proof.
But for the next summons three months later, they told me I had to show up because I bailed the first time, and they weren't about to mess around with me after I skipped out.

Anyway, I doubt you'll be waiting 4 years. It's been hard to make even 2
😉 pass lately.

Got hit with a speeding ticket today and I'm wondering how long until it expires? I know it used to be two years, but did they change that recently? Everyone’s been talking about it, but has an actual decision been made? Couldn't find anything online either... 🙄

And I already got screwed because they literally pulled ME out of line for speeding?!?!? How does the car in front of me get to go slower? 😲
The first time it was a taxi they let off easy, so I filed an appeal and got a warning. Today, it was two pickups, a van, a semi, and me in a sports car. We were all maybe 30 feet apart. They pull ME out of the left lane while that pickup is still cruising ahead of me in the right... Where's the logic? And how am I supposed to prove those numbers on their radar gun aren't mine? 😢

Pretty sure it's 4 years starting from January 1st, so don't hold your breath waiting for it to expire.😁

As for logic... yeah, that's definitely not their strong suit.😁
How to prove it? Hard as hell, but give it a shot. If the cop doesn't show up to court—which happens like 80% of the time—you might actually get lucky.

And honestly? There really is way too much. It could be more, or it could be less. Like, on weekends, sports—not just soccer—takes up like 50% of PBS2. But ebiga, I personally know people who can't even handle two or three channels that run sports 24/7, yet they have satellite, streaming, the internet, all that stuff... so I totally get why some people think this isn't enough.😁

Jason Hernandez2 said:Well, since I seem to have such incredible luck in this life, I managed to stumble right onto the tracks just as the flashing lights kicked in, all while a police cruiser was idling on the other side of the road. The officer ended up suspending my driver's license and my registration on the spot, informing me that I’d be facing $333 because they're going to tack on two points to my record and pull my license next month, plus an additional $167 in fines simply because my car is rated at 77kw when the limit is supposed to be 75kw. The strange thing is, he didn't hand me any paperwork or anything whatsoever; he didn't even ask me to sign a single document before telling me that everything would just arrive in my mailbox later. As far as I am aware, isn't an officer required to provide some sort of official documentation for me to sign right then and there, or am I perhaps mistaken about how these things work?
I am also quite curious if anyone here has had similar encounters, specifically regarding whether the court actually follows through with those two points or if they'll really charge me those ridiculous $167 penalties just because my car is technically 2kw over the limit. Furthermore, if there are any younger drivers out there who have been pulled over for driving a vehicle that's slightly too powerful, I’d love to know if you were handed a citation immediately or if I just happened to run into a particularly bloodthirsty officer.

Look, the court doesn't handle your points; the highway patrol does. They probably already logged them in their system.😁

As for the 75 kW limit... honestly, they let me off the hook once when they showed up at a wreck scene where I wasn't even at fault, even though my car is sitting at 97 kW. Another time, they even let me slide with a 128😁. I guess I got lucky, even if my buddies didn't. Plenty of people get slapped with those fines...

Now, regarding the court... maybe they'll lower the fine, maybe they'll drop it entirely, maybe...
