I think you both ended up linking to a fake benchmark site. 😛

What? 🤔

I know Anandtech is just generic bullshit, but the stuff I linked on YouTube looks like—well, it should be—legitimately done testing. How can you even tell if it's fake?

fadedviper26 said:I'm just looking at this for gaming, and honestly, AMD can't even touch the single-core speed of an 8600k. I'd only grab it if I could push an overclock up to 4.8 or maybe even 5.0 GHz.
Correct me if I'm totally off base here.

What would be the best Ryzen chip I could drop into my current motherboard? Maybe a 2700x?
Either way, I figure more cores is better than just sticking with 6.

It absolutely can CLICK. Here is a test comparing a Ryzen at 4.2 GHz against an Intel chip at 5.0 GHz. The result? Ryzen is faster on average by a few FPS.

Ryzen has fast cores and better IPC now; it's just that Intel reaches higher frequencies (which is offset, among other things, by Ryzen's superior IPC).

You can't put any Ryzen in your current motherboard because you have an Intel motherboard 😵

What I'm trying to say is there is zero sense in dropping $300 on a penultimate (it isn't even the latest 😉) generation USED Intel CPU and motherboard combo that already lacks support for the next generation coming out.

For that same amount of money, you get a NEW Ryzen combo that delivers equal gaming performance at LOWER clock speeds, plus it's better for all other workloads like video editing, encoding, compression, etc.

Mainboard plus the CPU.
RTX 3080 gaming x I7 12700K
I5 6600k
MSI Z170A SLI
HyperX 16GB DDR4 2133.
I was wondering if there's any way I can actually overclock this processor on this specific board, and more importantly, if it’ll even hold up to newer i7 or i9 chips when I finally decide to go big on a future upgrade.
Found this listing online that caught my eye, thanks!👍

link

Way too expensive. For that kind of money, you could get a new Ryzen and a new B450 motherboard that's basically the same or even a few FPS faster on average. CLICK

Don't even get me started on other workloads—the 8600K just can't compete.

Kimberly Gomez34 said:I might eventually look into switching to a different GPU vendor—maybe someone offering a 3-year warranty—but I’d definitely swap out the motherboard. Based on the Hardware Unboxed tests, that Gigabyte board runs a bit too hot around the VRMs for my liking. For instance, check out this link for the B450 gaming K4; it actually works out to be even cheaper.

I’d also throw in a Freezer 33 or 34 for cooling.

I didn't realize the motherboard could be swapped out easily. That's definitely doable.

As for the graphics card, the options in that link are a total disaster. This GPU is overpriced, and the next option, a Gainward 2070S, is almost the same price but only comes with a 2-year warranty.🤣

You could go with what swiftfalcon89 put together if the GPU warranty is a dealbreaker, but then you're paying about an extra hundred bucks for everything overall. 🕺

Built this at Best Buy since the prices are the same whether you pay cash or use financing.
If you look elsewhere, you'll probably end up with an RX5700XT, which is roughly 5-10% slower for the exact same total build price.

The monitor is a pretty obvious no-brainer, though I'm open to better suggestions if anyone has them 🤔
Best lightweight business laptops? in Laptops ·
I'm looking for some recommendations for a business laptop in the roughly $1667 range. If there's a significant jump in quality, I wouldn't mind stretching my budget by a couple hundred bucks.

Here's what I'm looking for:
  1. Ideally 16GB of RAM, but if that's not an option, it absolutely needs an open slot so I can upgrade it to 16GB myself later.
  2. Dual video outputs—HDMI plus DisplayPort would be ideal, though I'm open to mini DP or whatever other options are available.
  3. Something lightweight but built like a tank.
  4. A 14" screen would be perfect, but nothing larger than 15.6".
  5. A 256GB SSD is plenty; I don't need an HDD.

Basically, I want a fast, portable business machine that can drive two external monitors. Price isn't the biggest dealbreaker; I can go a bit higher if the machine is worth it. 🙂

But that’s going to change in a few days, if you don't buy right now just leave it on ice.

Better to go with 8GB RAM and squeeze in an Intel Core i5-7600K? 8GB will be enough in 95% of cases, and jumping from 4C/4T to 6C/12T is 😲

On a side note—it's crazy how many damn builds you can put together for relatively little cash these days. 🎉

crimsonstag84 said:A power supply is worth way more if there’s still warranty left on it. If it still has 3 years, it's worth at least $150.

I have no idea what the original warranty period was for this unit, but since I haven't seen it listed anywhere for ages, I just assumed it expired a while back.

But if we're talking about quality—yeah, it's great. I just highly doubt anyone would drop $150 on a used PSU when you can find solid, brand-new 750W units from brands like Corsair for roughly that same amount. 🙂

With that passive heatsink on there, it looks even more tiny, at least from the photo. I'm not sure, does "low profile" automatically imply some kind of standard set of dimensions?

silentlynx24 said:I’ve got a really tough question here. I tried figuring this out on my own, but I'm stuck.

So, I picked up a Dell OptiPlex SFF (it's a custom build, not stock), mostly because I haven't touched gaming in years and wasn't planning on it. But, I was playing some multiplayer games with a buddy on it recently, and now I'm thinking about doing the same at home. The PC itself should handle it fine since it has an i5 processor, but the graphics card is obviously way too weak.

Right now, I'm running a Radeon 5570. My power supply is rated at 240W, and even though this card supposedly needs 400W, I have no idea how it's even working—but it does. That said, if I upgrade, I really want a card that doesn't pull massive amounts of power so I don't fry something when things get heavy. 🙂

Recommended video cards are
VIDEO CARD: Nvidia GTX 660 or Better, ATI 7950 or better

The minimum requirement is
VIDEO CARD: Nvidia GTX 260 or ATI 4850

port
PCIe (v3.0)
1 ea.
2.5" low profile
6.6" length
35W max. power

Is there actually a graphics card out there that fits these specs?

Which game are we talking about?

SOMETHING LIKE THIS would be the bare minimum size-wise while still being somewhat capable of gaming. You'd basically have to plug it directly into your nipples to power it. 😬

Jonathan Reed50 said:Does an i5 9400f make sense right now since prices have dropped...

Bottom line $100 when compared to a more expensive Ryzen 3600? There isn't any. If you were on a razor-thin budget where you literally couldn't afford anything else, maybe—though I'd probably still just grab a Ryzen 2600 in that scenario.
In this case, absolutely not. It’s better for gaming in 99% of scenarios, and don't even get me started on everything else. Not to mention the upgrade path, the Future-proofing, or the sheer value you get for that money. 😁
