Especially those two AMD cores. And $67 honestly, upgrading to a faster processor and a better GPU doesn't make that much of a difference

Whoa, XCOM 2 isn't even that demanding, and I'm getting about 40 FPS on 720p low settings. And that's with 2666 MHz memory. Honestly, I expected more from the 7870K.
By the way, the 7890K is out, but there aren't any reviews for it yet.

There’s an XFX model at 500W for about five bucks more, if you can swing it.

Is it an issue if I start a new thread about buying a graphics card instead of using the sticky topic titled "Buying a graphics card?" 🙄 Radeon 380 x in that price range, nothing better than that.

neonpuma7 said:Just one more question, my crew and I are looking to run some games on some old hardware 🙂.

So, we're talking about a Dell 960. Specs are a Core 2 Duo E7400, 4GB DDR2—basically an office PC. The power supply is a Dell 255w, standard ATX size, and he's already looking into the power issues.

He wants to play some older titles, maybe something like S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky, Far Cry 2, and stuff like that.

What kind of GPU should he grab that won't blow the power supply? Budget is $167 max, and used gear is fine.

By the way, my buddy has had this rig forever; bought it brand new and it still runs like a charm—fast and smooth—but it lacks a dedicated GPU, obviously.

Any ideas?

Maybe a used 6770 or something? There's a PCIe slot on the motherboard, plenty of room, standard height, everything fits. Sorry to be a pain.

With that little wattage, I think it’s risky to slap any real graphics card in there. If it were even 250W, it might be okay, but the problem is it's not even hitting that. Maybe try an R7 240/250 DDR5...
neonpuma7 said:I previously owned an i5 paired with an NVIDIA GTX 660, but I was unfortunately forced to sell it due to circumstances beyond my control. It would have likely continued to run the games mentioned.

The current offer seems reasonable to me, so I wanted to reach out and ask for some advice before I commit to a purchase that might not be worth it. 🙂

$267 is a great deal for a full PC with those specs. I just hope the power supply is up to the task since those parts pull a fair amount of juice.

Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 on an LGA 775 platform
4GB DDR2
ATI Radeon HD 4890 1GB

I suppose this setup should be able to run NASCAR 2014, NASCAR 2015, iRacing, Assetto Corsa, Project CARS, rFactor 2, and similar titles.

The monitor is 19 inches with a resolution of 1360x720, which I think will allow for playing at medium settings. What are your thoughts? I don't really have any money for an upgrade right now, though I might be able to stretch to maybe $200 at most.$100.

It's a pretty old platform, but it should be fine for that resolution. A Quad-core CPU paired with that 4890 (which basically needs its own power plant 😬) should be enough if you drop the settings a bit at that res. Just keep in mind that card officially only supports DirectX 10.1, not DirectX 11, so MAYBE some of those titles you mentioned won't run great if they rely on specific DirectX 11 features. As for upgrading, you can't really do anything worthwhile with $200$100...
Look, I know they announced it for Q1 2016. A buddy of mine has a pretty beastly rig—Intel Core i7-4770K, a Platinum power supply, an ASUS ROG Maximus, but he's stuck with just a GTX 960 and has been patiently waiting on Pascal for six months now. If they only drop Titanka for now, that’s going to be a massive bummer. 😕We'll just have to see what happens with Intel; whether it's just more rebranding after rebranding or if we finally get some actual innovation.
A bit off-topic, but does anyone have any actual news on Pascal? They mentioned a release in Q1 2016, but we're already halfway through February and I still haven't heard anything concrete 😕

Timothy Kim60 said:It feels a bit ungrateful to judge, but I think that Sandy Bridge CPU is worth more (at least two hundred bucks) simply because it offers 40 PCIe lanes.

That’s a beast of a CPU, it just doesn't have many people who actually need it. I was checking eBay prices and they hover right around there—you can even find some near $1,000. It’s an older platform and wasn't even that mainstream back in its prime, so demand is definitely low. Personally, I'd start asking $1,500, though I might take less. Two hundred won't happen, though; for that kind of money, you could grab a newer 4460 plus a motherboard, which is plenty good enough for any gamer.
If someone needs to do heavy rendering or CPU-intensive work, then yeah, this would be a killer deal. But that's exactly the issue—how many people actually do that? 🙂
PC build ideas around $7500 in Desktops ·
It’s a bit weaker, but honestly, you don't really need to jump up to an i7 for a gaming build. It won't fit your budget anyway since it's more than $333 pricier than an i5. If I were you, I might look into a Skylake setup; with a few tweaks—maybe a cheaper power supply or a smaller 120 GB SSD—it could actually stay within your price range. That’s about as close as you can get. You just can't squeeze any more gaming performance out of this amount of money. And skip the AMD option; there's no point at this budget level.

That motherboard is a beast, but I'm not sure what current market rates look like since you can't find them in stores anymore, so it's hard to benchmark. Ask the more experienced folks here for a better estimate.

This is an absolute steal. It’s a little over $1,500, but for that price, you really can't beat the value.

Best budget PC case under $50? in Desktops ·
Yeah, the Nova only comes with one fan, but since it’s usually a bit cheaper than the Cooler Master options, you can just grab a couple of extra fans with the savings. With the Deathclaw, you get three fans pre-installed right out of the box, just like the Hyper 212+, which is what Angela Flores4 was mentioning. Personally, I’d go with the Hyper 212+. It looks better, and having those three fans already included is a huge plus. The Nova is decent enough, I guess, but it doesn't quite hit the mark compared to the other two. To me, the Hyper 212+ is easily the best-looking one, and honestly, you really can't go wrong with it in this situation 🙂

In that price bracket, you really don't have much to think about besides the Cooler Master Hyper 212 or the Hyper 212+... There's also the Corsair Deathclaw and maybe the NZXT Nova, but I still think the Cooler Master is the way to go.

If you're running a 144 Hz monitor, there’s really no point in building a rig for $1167. What resolution is your monitor at?

If you're planning on putting a Hex unit in there just because you think "it might hold up," plus that case... $50 At Connie, with a $1,500 CPU and a GPU that... $600So, that makes it about $40 cheaper. 🙂

EDIT: This shopping cart is a joke; it’s showing prices that don't even apply to cash payments. 😵 My bad, Connie is acting up... $1750.
