Jesse Thomas7 said:a-ha, listen up everyone, I’ve actually got the BASICS ready for a lawsuit! Obviously, there’s a 99.99% chance I’ll end up as a punchline in the local papers under some "ridiculous" headline right next to that guy who tried to argue in court that he actually owns the sun, but hey, I can still sue them. If I somehow manage to pull off a scheme where the judge is forced to watch Tron: Legacy the night before making his ruling, my chances of winning this suit are absolutely MASSIVE, haha.
So if I actually pull the trigger on this, you guys can all point and laugh at me when they publish my photo with a caption like: The girl who thought she could force Universal to preview their products before actually paying for them!

Btw, I see people are still totally missing the point. You’re all obsessing over how easy it is to stay INFORMED these days—which, fine, nobody is disputing that—but I’m just saying that out of all that noise, none of it matters to the one person who ends up NOT liking the movie. I mean, isn't half of those critics getting paid to sing the praises of absolute garbage? Don't they have their own little circles of bloggers and forum trolls doing the exact same thing? But noooooo, of course everyone is just writing the truth, pure truth, and nothing else...

You don't have any grounds for a lawsuit because there isn't a single law that allows for it, and you won't even get in front of a judge since no lawyer in America is going to take a case like that.

Honestly, while everyone else in this thread is busy acting shocked by how naive the OP is, I’m actually right there with her. I totally get the frustration. If those ridiculous opening weekend numbers and those loud, obnoxious, aggressive trailers drive me crazy too, then we’re all feeling the same thing.
To really push back against all that noise, you basically have to be a hardcore cinephile with way too much free time on your hands.

And besides, why on earth would anyone need eight hours a day just to stay informed about a movie? 😲

It really only takes fifteen to thirty minutes to learn everything worth knowing without accidentally spoiling the plot.

Here’s an analogy for you:

Imagine you buy this dish soap that claims it can blast through the toughest stains with just two drops—that's the pitch, anyway. Then, in reality, you find out it won't touch certain grease spots unless you scrub like a maniac with some random wire brush, basically ruining your cookware in the process. Just try taking that soap back to the store and explaining why it didn't live up to the hype. Good luck with that.

You aren't getting your money back, obviously—that’s just classic marketing tactics at work.

Think about those commercials for cell phone carriers; they all claim to be the absolute best, which we know is impossible. You wouldn't dream of trying to get out of your service contract just because their service sucked, right? Of course you wouldn't.

Your real issue here isn't that you can't get a refund for a movie; it's that you're falling for the advertisements.

Brian, just watch movies based on research. Check out websites dedicated to reviews and ratings, and honestly, you can learn more than enough from this PDF too—it'll tell you exactly what kind of movie it is and if it's worth your time without anyone spoiling a single plot point.

The trailer looks pretty solid to me

By the way, I caught a preview yesterday at AMC with the American dubbing

It was honestly terrible, man

I have absolutely zero desire to watch this in American

It’s been years since I last sat down with a Bergman film—really enjoyed this pick

I'm planning to dive back into it tomorrow afternoon

I actually think that’s a pretty solid idea—though honestly, the current setup works fine too, since limiting it to one movie selection per month ensures everyone eventually gets their turn at the wheel.

How were you thinking of handling the voting process? Would it be restricted to just the active participants, or should we open it up to the entire forum via a poll?

Also, I have one more quick question—to keep things organized, are we going to start a fresh thread for each occasion, or are we planning to keep everything bundled into one single mega-thread?
Movie week in Movies ·
I’m all for it—it feels like a solid, well-fleshed-out idea now. As for the actual movies, I think it just comes down to whoever strikes gold first and posts it here.

I think I’ll probably skip a few days until I stumble upon a discussion that actually has some meat on its bones—something that hasn't been recycled a hundred times already. After all, like goldenhound32 mentioned, it would be awesome if we focused on films that aren't being talked about everywhere you look.

Though, it would definitely be a bummer if someone suggested some obscure indie flick from 1983 that is basically impossible to find online.

We need something watchable and accessible, yet still a bit under the radar—not just the same mainstream stuff that's constantly shoved in our faces.

Anyway, I just totally butchered my own point there. 😬

Honestly, the timing doesn't really matter—whether it's midnight or 7 in the morning—I think cosmiclynx57 was just trying to give everyone a heads-up so they wouldn't miss this thread.

My bad—I didn't realize I didn't have voting rights on this forum here.

I was simply offering a suggestion—goodness knows I wasn't trying to insult anyone.

Is it just me, or has everyone on this board been acting a bit overly aggressive lately?

edit: I get what you're saying, cosmiclynx57.

I’m not really feeling these rules

If there turns out to be enough interest—I’m thinking at least 20 active members, which I honestly think we're pretty close to hitting—we should probably implement a rule where if you’ve already picked the movie week once, you can't post again for the rest of that month.

That feels much more realistic to me; right now, being able to post every other week just seems a bit silly—everyone deserves a fair shot to get their candidate into the conversation.

Also, it would be great if we could set a specific window for actually watching the film. For instance, if someone picks a movie most of us haven't seen yet, we need a reasonable deadline—say, 3 days—which I think is plenty of time to squeeze in a movie before the discussion kicks off on day 4.

That said, I definitely welcome anyone who might have a different take or a different perspective on these suggestions to speak up.
Student Loans in Banking, Insurance & Loans ·
rowdyheron80 said:Hey everyone... I really need some advice here 😢

So, here’s the deal: I just enrolled in my junior year of college—I'm turning almost 30 $0.00—and I have my first tuition installment of about 12 $0.00 coming due very soon. The problem? I already told my parents I had this handled because I worked so much over the summer. The truth is, I haven't actually saved anything. I ended up giving most of my earnings to them to help out—they're both getting older and dealing with some health issues, and between their two different loans and my sister being in high school, they're struggling to make ends meet every month. I wanted to take some weight off their shoulders, you know? But now I'm stuck. How can I apply for a student loan without involving them? I don't want to drag them into the paperwork or risk them being tied to any co-signing or guarantor stuff... please, if anyone has any ideas or advice, I'm all ears... 🙏

Honey, why on earth would you sign up for Penn State given the circumstances?

Weren't there cheaper options available?

Honestly, the only real way forward might be finding a close friend to act as a co-signer—assuming you have someone who actually trusts that you can handle the payments on your own—otherwise, I’m not sure what else could help.

There aren't really any significant loans available without a co-signer who can put up that kind of cash upfront as a guarantee; and if you happen to see an ad for "easy credit" on a bus or a subway flyer, steer clear at all costs—you don't want to end up in permanent debt slavery.

I’ve gotta say, this doesn't look particularly promising to me—it feels less like they're aiming for a serious cinematic experience and more like they're just trying to make some low-brow comedy

Just my two cents, but I was really hoping for a high-quality project here; at this rate, it looks like it's just going to end up being another Kick-Ass
What's the best David Fincher movie? in Movies ·
Honestly, what is the point of starting a poll if you aren't going to actually put any effort into it?

Which IMDB link are we talking about? Where's the original post? And what's the actual take from the person who started this thread?

Absolutely nothing useful here, huh?

Personally, I'm torn between Se7en

and Fight Club

Now, Fight Club is definitely more intense when it comes to the acting—plus, it’s easily one of the most unique films ever made—but I have always been a huge fan of thrillers. I'll never quite forget the impact Se7en had on me the first time I saw it; for years, that was my absolute favorite movie. So, despite all the sheer brilliance of Fight Club, I might just lean toward Se7en this time around.

placidranger said:Seriously—look, people, just don't bother watching any Will Ferrell movies if you aren't already a fan of his style.

Look, I’m the type of person who likes to give everyone a fair shot. I've been let down by plenty of actors before, but they’ve gone on to make great stuff later, so I try not to write off a movie until I've actually sat through it.

The premise actually seemed pretty fun, so I decided to give this one a chance.

It just didn't land for me—it wasn't my cup of tea—but that doesn't mean I'm totally done with Will Ferrell. Who knows? Maybe he'll eventually make something that really clicks for me.

I also thought Mark Wahlberg might be able to carry the comedy a bit more, but even then, it wasn't enough; honestly, I just didn't find it funny at all.
The Other Guys (2010) in Movies ·
Mark Wahlberg is honestly one of my favorite action stars lately—he’s got such a great knack for making supporting roles shine, too.

Which is exactly why I can't wrap my head around why he decided to jump into such a shallow, mindless comedy.

The whole movie feels like the actors are practically begging you to laugh, but it just isn't funny; the comedic timing is forced, the situations feel way too over-the-top, and the dialogue—which is supposed to be the punchline—is just plain dull. Ferrell is just... well, he's Ferrell. In my experience, he was underwhelming in Semi-Pro, hit a wall in Blades of Glory, and was pretty rough in Talladega Nights, though I suppose that's fair since the entire movie is just nonsense to begin with.

And honestly, this might actually be his weakest performance yet, which is saying something given how bad he is here.🙄

Bottom line? Only bother watching this if every other cinema in the country burns down and every DVD on Earth is destroyed—except for this one.
So, here’s the situation—my mom has a birthday coming up soon, and since she’s a dedicated smoker, I put together what I thought was the absolute perfect gift combo. But, of course, once I mentioned it, she completely changed her tune.

Basically, she smokes rolling tobacco, so I picked out this really nice silver tin for her—very classy—and I was planning on pairing it with a more budget-friendly Zippo. But the second I hinted at the idea, the interrogation started.

"Why would I need that? I'd never use it. It's too expensive. You're just throwing money away," and blah, blah, blah... you know how it goes.

And honestly, even if I went all out and actually bought the Zippo, I know deep down it would just end up sitting in a drawer somewhere. She wouldn't want to carry it around or mess with it too much, and I’m just not really into buying "display pieces"—I prefer getting things people actually use.

So now, I’m hunting for a better alternative to a Zippo—something cheaper—but the most important thing is that it has to be a butane lighter.

I'm sure they exist in plenty of places, but I really don't feel like driving from shop to shop across town just to hunt down a single lighter. I figured I’d check here to see if anyone has some experience or could recommend a good gift shop or something similar.

Anyway, here is basically my vision of how the set should look:

http://image.made-in-china.com/2f0j0...ter-AM102-.jpg

It doesn't necessarily need to be a jet flame style; I just want it to look sharp without breaking the bank.

If anyone knows a spot where I might actually have some decent variety to choose from, please help a guy out—I'd love to save myself the trek through Chicago.

Black Death (2010) in Movies ·
Great movie—though I should probably give a heads-up to anyone expecting non-stop, crazy medieval battle scenes: you might be disappointed. There is definitely action, but that isn't really what this film is trying to achieve

I personally found the story quite engaging, and Sean Bean absolutely nailed his role—plus, even a young Osmond holds his own here
