Just one 24-inch, 4-pound slab of meat... that'd do the trick.😬

I just put together a retro gaming rig—Pentium III, ASUS P3B-F motherboard, GeForce 2 MX 16mb, plus sound and LAN cards. I'm planning to add a USB controller, an extra hard drive, and an optical drive. Since I want to swap out the power supply for something newer, I need a reliable unit that can actually handle the load. Are those cheap Corsair's units good enough to get the job done without issues?
This one caught my eye the most though:

Let me know what you think or if you have suggestions!
Thanks in advance!

Adam Barrett7 said:i7-6700 ($340) + MSI B150 ($70) = $410
i5-6400 ($195) + MSI Pro Z170 ($115) + Cooler Master 212 ($32) = $342
i5-6400 ($195) + MSI H110 ($60) = $255
The price gap between the i7 and i5 isn't even that massive.
I’ll probably just go with the cheapest option anyway.
Adam Barrett7 said:Haven't pulled the trigger yet. I'm buying everything next week, so right now I'm just digging through options to make sure I get the most bang for my buck.😁
EDIT: That i7 is way out of my budget. Plus, you'd need an extra cooler on top of that. With a 6400, the stock cooler handles it just fine without breaking a sweat.

I'm looking for this part for a Dell Inspiron 17

The case weighs barely 6.6 lbs and measures about 13x9x13 inches. Maybe it's a bit too big?

Intel Core i3 6100 processor
ASUS H110M-R motherboard
CORSAIR Power Supply, Builder Series CX 80+ Bronze, 430 Watt, ATX, EPS12V, PS/2, EU Version
Patriot Viper4, 2400Mhz, 8GB (2x4GB), CL15
Kingston 240GB SSD, UV400 SATA 3 Bulk
+ another 2.5in 500GB Western Digital HDD
I need suggestions for a GPU that won't blow my power supply. Budget is somewhere between $800 and $333.
Thanks!
Angela Ramirez96 said:Which local shop put this together? And what exactly makes you think these parts don't work together?
Angela Ramirez96 said:Hey everyone :P
I've been putting together a gaming rig with a $6,500 budget, but I’m feeling a bit unsure—where did I mess up in your eyes? Does anything here actually need to change?
Seriously, rip my ego apart if you have to; any criticism is welcome. Since I’m paying with an American Express card, I know most big retailers offer some kind of points or perks, and obviously, prices vary everywhere, so if you have a specific shop recommendation, let me know. Right now, I’ve just thrown everything into a cart at Best Buy.
Also, keep in mind I’m trying to build this to last for the next 3 or 4 years, so I'm trying to squeeze out every bit of value possible. I mostly play League, all the Call of Duty series, and CS, so I want the best performance I can get within the $2167 range—nothing more, nothing less. 😁
DDR3 8GB (1x8GB) PC3-12800 1600MHz CL9 Corsair Vengeance LP, CML8GX3M1A1600C9, CML8GX3M1C1600C9
Intel Core i5-4670K (4MB Cache, up to 4.30 GHz)
EVGA GeForce GTX 1060, 8 GB DDR5, 256-bit, 1254/6700 MHz
ASUS ROG Maximus, sAM3+
Corsair VS Series VS450, ATX 2.31, CP-9020096
Zalman Z9 PLUS mid tower case. 207(W) x 464(H) x 504(D)mm. MB standard: Standard ATX / Micro ATX. P
So, basically, everything listed here is what I'd buy—I already have a CD drive, some hard drives, and an SSD that probably needs an upgrade anyway. If I pull the trigger at Best Buy, the total on a payment plan comes out to about $5,700, which leaves me with roughly $267 left over.
Please, tell me the best way to go about this—what should I scrap and what should I keep? It’s always that endless tug-of-war between Intel and AMD, or GeForce vs. Radeon... I'm stuck. And look, the budget is set in stone because my wife won't let me spend a single cent more than this. 😁
Thanks in advance for any suggestions, critiques, or info you can throw my way.
cosmicbison38 said:If you don't think it's the power supply, then what's the play here? Are we looking at a faulty graphics card? Or maybe the motherboard is acting up? It feels a bit early for that, though, since the whole setup isn't even two years old yet, and it's certainly not like the hardware lacks the necessary support 😢
wiredotter14 said:He’s already got the Hexa core, and he’s running a 7850 OC pulling about 120W, so there isn't much of a gap there.
Honestly, grabbing something like a Radeon RX 470 is a solid alternative since it handles 1080p gaming just fine and saves some cash. You could go with a 1060 3GB which is definitely more efficient, but I think the Radeon RX 470 is the better deal.
Just a heads up though, watch those rails with any of these cards. You don't want the motherboard and the PCI Express slot pulling from the exact same rail if the power supply splits them up.

For a budget under $667 Best Buy
crimsonstag84 said:Maybe that would work on an RX 480 + FreeSync IPS monitor😉
Kimberly Gomez34 said:I wouldn't recommend the combo deal because that motherboard has two DDR3 slots and two DDR4 slots. If you went with a B150 board that actually has four slots, you could use this or this one with the VRM heatsink
.
Kyle Miller6 said:I was also wondering, what kind of performance am I actually looking at with a setup like this when it comes to running modern titles—you know, things like Battlefield 1, The Witcher 3, and stuff in that vein?
I’ll definitely crack it open and take a good look at everything once I have it in hand.
I'm planning on doing a bit more digging and seeing if anyone out there has some solid recommendations or parts I should Google, because honestly, there's no rush on my end; I just really want to make sure I'm getting the absolute most bang for my buck here.
Thanks so much for getting back to me so quickly!
