Help with a mini ITX build in Desktops ·
Is there even such a thing as a low profile RX 460?
Budget upgrade ideas? in Desktops ·
Jason Mendoza said:The GPU is a Radeon 7770 HD and the case is just some cheap no-name thing with a basic power supply. I definitely planned on upgrading both the case and the PSU at the same time.

If you grab a decent case and power supply, you're looking at about $700-$$333, which leaves you with maybe $1500-$$667 for everything else... if you decide to swap out the CPU, an RX 460 is pretty much the only card that fits that budget right now. Your best bet is to leave the CPU alone and just grab a better card, like an RX 470, for around $1600... see if you can shave a few bucks off those processors, maybe you can swing both 😬

Just picking up a used Core i5 2500 from eBay. Is this for me? $300 Either/or. Who's here for this? $283 either/or Core i5 2400? What for? $250Depends on which part of the States you're calling home.

So, I'm not sure if you already picked up a new case or if that's still part of the budget. It all depends on how much you can squeeze out of the CPU if there's anything left over. $0.67 If you can swing it, definitely go for the GTX 1060. If the budget hits that $1600-$1700 wall, just grab the RX 470 instead.

Which graphics card are we talking about here?

Found an old post mentioning somewhere around $3,000 to $3,500, and you could probably pull it off through Newegg too. 😬

Found this one over at Newegg for about $475. $1.00 The power supply is a bit overkill, but it fits within the budget—plus it's Gold rated and comes with a 7-year warranty. As for the case, it’s exactly what you mentioned that everyone seems to love, and a card in this tier is definitely a step up from the GTX1060 3gb.

Sapphire RX 480 nitro + 4 GB - AeroCool Syclone ii
EVGA SuperNOVA G2 80 Plus Gold 550W
AeroCool Syclone II.

You could probably do something similar over at Centro.hr for the price. $1.00 It’s just as good of a power supply, only it comes with a 5-year warranty.

Sapphire RX 480 nitro + 4 GB - AeroCool Syclone ii
AeroCool Syclone II.
Flower Golden Green HX 80 plus Gold 550 w EDIT

EDIT: Honestly, if you swap out the case and the power supply for some cheaper options, you could probably squeeze an SSD into the build at Newegg without blowing the budget. $1.25...☕

And he mentioned that he’s thinking about changing that, too:

Look, I'm no hardware expert, so I didn't realize the price range was this insane. Going through all these listings just leaves me with a bunch of questions.
I started out thinking about building a budget rig without an SSD, but... I'm wondering if you could put together a build using a slightly weaker GPU, but paired with a solid power supply and a decent case..

Did you mention what kind of budget we're looking at for this upgrade? I've been reading through, but I don't see it in your last post... 🤷

Anyway, if we're talking about a card in the $0.67 range, I'd honestly pick the RX480 4GB over the GTX1060 3GB. Look, the RX480 and GTX1060 are pretty much neck and neck depending on whether you're playing DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 titles, but that only really holds true for the GTX1060 6gb version. The 3GB model isn't just short on memory—it's running a weaker chip altogether. Meanwhile, the RX480 8gb and 4gb versions use the exact same chip...

Here’s a link to Microsoft support. If that doesn't cut it, just Google "file boot bcd error code 0xc00000e9 Windows 8" and dig through the results... everyone ends up needing a different fix or a specific combo of steps to get it working.

By the way, what's the actual difference in FPS between the processor I picked out and that cheapest Intel Core i5 they have listed?
And while we're at it, how good is this graphics card actually?

Also, I requested the build without any drives—that way I can decide later if it makes more sense to beef up the GPU or the CPU, you know? Which one would be the better move?

One more thing—what kind of difference would it make if I paid with an American Express card, assuming I don't push the budget past $6,500?

CPU: Intel Core i5 6500 BOX, LGA 1151, 3.2GHz, 6MB cache, GPU, Quad Core
Motherboard: ASROCK H170M Pro4S, Intel H170, DDR4, audio, G-LAN, SATA3, USB 3.0, DVI, HDMI, mATX, LGA 1151
RAM: Memory PC-17000, 8 GB, Kingston ValueRAM, KVR21N15D8/8, DDR4 2133 MHz
GPU: Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 480 Nitro + , 8GB GDDR5, HDMI, DP
PSU: 550W Power Supply, ANTEC True Power Classic TP-550C, ATX, 120mm fan
CASE: Fractal Design Core 1100, MIDI, black, no PSU included
extra case fan: SCYTHE Kama PWM Fan, 92mm, 2500 rpm

Best Buy $2150 for Amex (1-12 monthly installments)

In this build, the processor is the only part that isn't a great value, but Best Buy doesn't have a cheaper i5 than this one... otherwise, Best Buy usually has the best prices on cards, though their stock selection can be a little "thin." ☕

If you still have the installation media used to put Windows on your PC, you can probably fix this yourself... provided you follow the instructions.

Which version of Windows are we talking about here? Is it 7, Vista, Windows 8, 10...?

Either way, your boot Configuration data is trashed. You’re probably going to need a Windows disc or a USB drive to rebuild that BCD...

Look, the Dell S2721HGF and the Samsung Odyssey G5 were the two cheapest options I could find around here. The Dell is sitting at $460, the Samsung at $490 (there are cheaper cash deals out there, but I’d definitely be putting this on my credit card) and honestly, I'm leaning toward the Samsung because of that 3-year warranty... plus, I couldn't find a straight answer on the Dell's stand height anywhere. One site claimed some nonsense about 36 inches, while the official specs just say the stand has a 6-inch adjustable range 😂

I'll just wait "a bit" until 1440p becomes the standard here and prices actually drop to something reasonable 🤣

The Plus side is the quiet cooler and decent price; the minus is the 2-year warranty (whereas Sapphire and XFX are offering 3 now)

For some people, the length will be a dealbreaker too. Most Radeon RX 480 cards sit around 240mm, but this one is a massive 310mm

Dammit, I want 1440p, then it’s gotta be IPS, then I need FreeSync, plus it has to stay under 19 inches... by the time I'm done, I'm looking at $500$1.75 for a setup like 😁
.
I'll just wait a year or two🕺.

My bad, totally missed this part about the second SSD 😁

Did you check via Disk Management? Take a look there—it’s probably showing up as "Not initialized" or something similar, so you'll likely just need to format it...

So, was your HDD split into two partitions before you did the upgrade? 😉

Kimberly Gomez34 said:Does that guy make dressers?

Look, I think 24" isn't a bad call for 1440p right now (especially since people are pushing 4K on 15" laptops these days), but if you can swing a 27", that’d be the better move.

Is 19.5 inches really a dealbreaker? How about this one?

Otherwise, your perfect solution is this 25" model—it's IPS and the price is solid. With the stand, the height is barely over 16.5 inches.

EDIT

Or you could just grab something like this with a pivot function and just lower it as far as you need it to go.😁

Dammit, I didn't even realize this Acer had FreeSync too... 😲

We have a winner! 🙂
