FORTRON Hyper, 600W+ XFX NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti

ruggedpanther2 said:I'm looking at picking up a new PSU too. There are tons of options out there, and I don't see the point in dropping $500 or $200.
Thinking about these:
Akira AK-B1-700 Basic, 700W https://www.newegg.com/artikl.aspx?pid=33865
Xilence RedWing R7 Edition, 500 W https://www.newegg.com/artikl.aspx?pid=34557
SPIRE Pearl, 550 W https://www.newegg.com/artikl.aspx?pid=37666

Prices are pretty much the same. If anyone has a recommendation for something else—price doesn't matter—I might consider it.

You don't need to spend $500-$600, but the ones you picked are total junk... does it really have to be from Newegg?

EDIT: if it has to be from Newegg, then at least go with an EVGA 400W with a 3-year warranty, or this EVGA 430W with a 5-year warranty.

The power supply is from Microsoft (as far as I know, MSI doesn't actually make PSUs) and it’s pretty cheap stuff (unless they're using EVGA parts). On paper, it should handle an NVIDIA GTX 1650, but honestly, swapping it out is probably a smart move if you can manage it.

That confusion between MS and MSI likely comes from the official name, "Microsoft Industrial".😉

What am I supposed to do with a pack of smokes? 🤔 Even back when I was a smoker, I didn't know how to roll my own 😬.

Yeah, I checked. Best Buy has it out of stock, but Micro Center actually has it in... though they won't take Amex. 👎

It’s a bummer that the BenQ 27 isn't in stock at Best Buy, and the other guys won't take my Amex ☕.

What should I be looking for when picking up a Samsung Galaxy S23, 23" LED? 😬

Haha, nah, I'm in no rush, but I'm just not a fan of buying used electronics. 😬

Look, I get what Kimberly Gomez34 is saying, but it’s not like every single pivot mount lets you adjust the height...

Hard to find, even if I could... honestly, I don't think I want to drop that much cash. If it were like 40% cheaper, then maybe we're talking. 🤣 😬

It won't fit any higher because of how the desk is built—there's a shelf right at that height. If I tried to pull it out past the shelf, it’d basically be hanging off the edge of the desk...

Hmm... I've been eyeing the Dell P2416D, but that BenQ 27" you have looks pretty good too, assuming it actually fits 😬

EDIT: My desk is something like this:

Lawrence Phillips said:Who knows what the world will look like in two years, right? 😁But if I'm not mistaken, the 1060 is actually a bit beefier than the AMD Radeon RX 480, so I bet it'll hold up for more than two years—and by then, I'm sure there'll be plenty of brand-new cards out anyway.

I don't know... it feels like forever since I was deep into all this stuff. I used to think just like you, buying motherboards and cards specifically so I could do SLI or Crossfire later, but I never actually pulled the trigger. I always ended up just selling the old gear and grabbing something new instead.

Regarding the bolded part, it depends on the game. For most DirectX 11 titles, there isn't much difference, or it might even favor the AMD Radeon RX 480 when using DirectX 12 / Vulkan / Mantle. They should check which card performs better in the specific games they actually play. Since DirectX 12 is the future, I’d personally give a slight edge to the AMD Radeon RX 480, but again, let them see what works best for "their" library. ☕

lol, how much should they even cost when a GTX 1070 Nitro 4GB is under $0.67? Honestly, they ought to be even cheaper than that. 🍿

Does anyone know of a decent 1440p monitor that stays under about 18.5 inches total height? Honestly, is there even any point in chasing 1440p if you can't get a 27" screen? I'm guessing those standard 27" models won't fit my setup anyway. 🤷

fadedorca66 said:Since you aren't running a total potato right now (an Intel Core i5 can handle most things decently enough), it might be smarter to just hold out for the new Intel Core architecture and those upcoming Intel chips dropping early next year. Plus, you’d finally move over to DDR3.

If you're dead set on buying something today, go for an Intel Core i7-3770K plus 2-4GB of RAM, though honestly, the i7-3770K is basically just the same junk as your current chip but with two extra cores. It's old tech at this point, so I’d rather wait a bit and grab something modern.

Tyler (bolded)? Anyway, I'm with fadedorca66 on this one. 👍

Fortron Raider S 650w is almost a steal for what you pay, but honestly, the Fortron Raider S 750w is pretty garbage...

I never really looked into the 550w version, but since I've got one sitting at my wife's place right now, I'll check back in with some actual thoughts after 7 or 8 years pass.😬

Not sure if you mentioned which case you're running, so just double-check how much clearance you actually have before pulling the trigger... don't want you getting screwed. 😬

Look, check your case dimensions first, then look at the manufacturer's spec sheet for the card length. Online retailers can be hit or miss with the details. For instance, that RX 480 from Best Buy that juretherebel linked says it's 310mm, but the card is actually only 240mm 😵, whereas for that NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 he linked, there's no length listed at all (even though it's 280mm).

Lol, these AiB partners are going to completely wreck AMD with their pricing 🤣 it’s honestly ridiculous how AiB brands are charging the exact same price for cards that had a $50 difference in MSRP 🤔 It’s obvious the RX series needed way more "polishing" 🤷
