My bad😵 ...I left out (A) because the values come from the graph db(A), not just db... mea culpa 🙈

Timothy Kim60 said:There’ll probably only be a 1-2 dB difference (970 vs 390)

That's a pretty bold generalization coming from you, especially since different GeForce GTX 970 cards can vary by 5-10 dB under load🙂

EDIT: That claim might fly if both cards were from the same manufacturer using identical coolers😉

The only real difference is the factory overclock, so it isn't worth the extra cash. You're going to need a solid aftermarket cooler anyway, then you can just overclock an fx-8300 to 4GHz without any issues (some people even push them to 4.8GHz if they have heavy-duty liquid cooling 😬)... plus, the price gap between the fx-8300 and the fx-8350 is like $60 😵.

Since I won't be playing at Ultra High Definition or 4K anytime soon, I'd probably grab the $1000 MSI GeForce GTX 970 Gaming. I have a bit of an obsession with keeping noise levels down. 😬

I have a desktop PC and since it was dusty, I used an air compressor to blow it out. I took the heatsinks off—both the big one and the small one—to clean them, put everything back together, and now when I try to power it on...
Nothing shows up on the screen. Absolutely nothing.

Did I fry something? I honestly have no clue if it's the motherboard, the RAM, or what.??
Or maybe it's just the cable running from the tower to the screen? Please help, this is urgent.

Did you flip the power switch on the PSU? Did you plug all the cables back in exactly how they were before? Make sure every single connection is seated properly, especially the CPU and motherboard power cables...
Timothy Kim60 said:Whatever, this thread already has useful links alongside Best Buy, so why not throw in some useful screenshots from those sites too? 😁

Anyway, RAM prices just keep sliding:

by the way, that shop is just a retail arm for Micro Center.

Does "m san" have any retail shops they recommend? 😬

It was written specifically for people like you 🙂

EDIT: if I could check it out in person and there's still 30 months of warranty left, I'd grab it—assuming it hasn't been overclocked the whole time.

Man, if I lived closer to a Small town in the Midwest... or if I actually had someone out there who could check 🕺

Timothy Kim60 said:That’s how it looks, but the specs aren't everything. In benchmarks, he's pulling 280 with 3GB and 380 with 4GB, and that first one holds its own—sometimes even beating it at 1440p or 4K because it's just a beefier GPU.

Yeah, I know, it just caught my eye...

3gb is perfectly fine for a GPU in this class.

Is there a typo in that table from the link? It should probably list the GTX 980 or GTX 980X instead of the R9 280 or R9 290, especially since they labeled them as GTX 980 and GTX 970 right underneath.😬

crimsonstag84 said:Right... so if you pick something mid-range, it's basically the same as an R9 290 x.

My next big jump will probably be to some 14nm Gen2 tech around 2018. 😛

Man, my 7850 isn't going to make it to 2018... it's already starting to struggle.🕺

Timothy Kim60 said:One Guru3d review claims the MSI card pulls less power than the R9 290 x, but Hardcore or Tom's Hardware say it’s actually pulling way more 🤷

It just comes down to how they're measuring the wattage...

Whatever. As long as prices drop by $167 over the next three months to hit their actual value, we can finally go shopping 😬

crimsonstag84 said:I'm with you on the 390X, but the 390 could be a solid deal if it drops by $900(-10%). It pulls less power and runs about 5-15% faster (with a 50MHz boost to the GPU clock and 1GHz on the memory) than the R9 290, plus you get that 8GB VRAM.

And "lower power consumption" is a stretch... the MSI R9 390 x pulls nearly 300W, which is way higher than the R9 290. 🤷

Anthony Hayes82 said:I could grab a cheaper, lower-end motherboard, sure, but if a solid Broadwell chip drops tomorrow, I won't be stuck needing an upgrade just to run it. This board handles both my i5 4690k Asus Z97 Pro 2 and future chips perfectly fine. Plus, it has automated overclocking, which is huge because I don't have all day to babysit a PC trying to find a stable overclock.

That board is insanely overpriced. The value proposition is garbage, but hey, it's your money... 😬

How does an AMD Athlon x4 5350 stack up against the Intel Celeron G1840 for basic office work? Trying to find some reviews, but I'm hitting a wall. Feeling a bit out of it today. 😬

Asking because I already told my wife that AMD is junk, but honestly, I don't know much about AMD's AM1 platform... Is it supposed to be a low-power option similar to those Intel SoC 1150 processors? 🤷

Timothy Kim60 said:the vg4 is basically ASRock's cheapest, bottom-of-the-barrel budget option. then you have the DGS stuff—if I remember right, those 1155 socket and FM2 boards had massive failure rates. look, it’ll work fine if that's what you want, but both are a waste of money compared to an MSI board with a 3-year warranty from $107.

This is the actual best-buy for budget Intel builds. HDS has the USB 3.0 header (for front panel cases, not just the rear ports), slightly better voltage regulation, and HDMI if you're using integrated graphics (unlike the vg4). Plus, it should carry a 3-year warranty just like the MSI, ASUS, or Gigabyte boards.

You're right. I thought I linked HDS instead of DGS. 😵 😬 😵

out of stock and just not worth it

Well, fine. It’s like waiting for a GPU that doesn't even exist right now anyway...😛

How exactly is that B85 a better buy for $30 more money? 🤔

Timothy Kim60 said:Which R9 280? Look at the top right corner—check if all that stuff is actually available.
I’d be looking for something with better build quality, like a higher-end Dell or something similar. This is it.

That installment price you're looking at doesn't include the 8% discount—so if you ask me, the whole thing is way overpriced. $1800

He doesn't need a better board than that. It’s just... whatever. Three-year warranty included.

XFX R9 290 - under $25$833

Heh. We're hitting month five soon... better clear out the old stock before that AMD 300 series hits the shelves.😬
