Honestly, I'm at my wit's end trying to kill this crap. I'm terrified it's gonna fry my new GPU once I finally pick it up.

What exactly is it doing? (My bad if you already mentioned it, I missed it). I had that thing installed along with 3.4.2 too, but I wiped it and the whole mess is gone... though, to be fair, I didn't really run into issues before—either I just stumbled onto the program by accident or Norton flagged it for me, I can't quite remember. 🤔

mistypilot9 said:Hey guys, some kid in my building bought a PC without a GPU because the seller decided to keep it, so he asked me for help picking one out. Since you all helped me put together my build last week, I figured I’d ask here. 🙂

He's got an ASUS M5A97 Le R2 motherboard, AM3+, AMD 970/SB950, DDR3
It should definitely work for gaming. He’s always over at my place playing GTA V, Assassin's Creed IV, NFS, Diablo III, and Skyrim on his Xbox, so I assume he'll want to run those same games—and maybe newer stuff—on his own rig. I'm not sure which CPU he has, but the whole setup he grabbed off Craigslist is about 2 years old.
If there's a decent card for $533 that can handle these titles and maybe a few newer ones, that would be great... thanks.

You really need to find out what processor he's running, because that changes everything when choosing a card. For that kind of money, he might find an R9 280, but if his CPU is a total dud, it's just going to be a massive bottleneck.

Headphone recommendations? in Computer Peripherals ·
Looking for some over-ear headphone recommendations. They’re strictly for PC use—don't need a mic at all. Ideally under $67, though if I can find something for 😬, even better. Lightweight is the priority here.

On a separate note, does anyone know if there are headphones made with beefier cables than the standard ones, specifically where the jack meets the wire? It feels like my desk constantly pinches or kinks the cord right at the connector 🙂🙂🙂, and then the whole thing becomes total junk 🙄... maybe it's fixable, but I have zero clue who handles repairs like that. 🤔
Alexander Moore67 said:Looks like you aren't keeping an eye on the dollar exchange rate...

Look, I get that prices spiked because of the dollar, but that doesn't make them "normal."😛

Otherwise, since we're talking about the dollar, what I didn't realize is that every single shop around here works with suppliers tied directly to the USD. 😉
Man, these prices are absolutely insane 😵 everything just went totally off the rails, jumping $100 higher than ever since New Year's 🙂

Terrible timing to be buying anything right now 😬

New monitor or a PC upgrade? in Desktops ·
Robert Rodriguez2 said:Drew Sanchez82, I can't say I agree that the price for a 970 is reasonable. Over here, it’s $1000 sitting at about $500, while in the States you can grab one for anywhere from $300 to $350 depending on the brand—so roughly $1800-$700. That's a massive chunk of change. With what we pay for a 970 here, you could easily walk into a store in the US, pick up a 980, and still have cash left over.

Exactly. Retailers claim their margins are "slim," but honestly, the biggest gap is just our sales tax compared to how things work over there...
Still, if you don't mind traveling, you can find a GTX 970 in Germany for around $360... so it really comes back to local retailers padding their pockets, mostly because we're such a small market that they can't get bulk discounts like the big players do...

crimsonstag84 said:Generally speaking, you get a noticeably better picture quality, less eye strain, and those viewing angles you mentioned.

In scenarios where input lag is the priority—like gaming—there isn't much of a difference anymore between TN and LCD/OLED/VA panels compared to how things were a few years back.

Wait, aren't TN monitors 120-144Hz? 🤔

Kimberly Gomez34 said:Why aren't those two factors enough on their own? 😬

Especially since lately, LCD or OLED panels are priced pretty much the same as various TN options.

Just asking because I want to know what you guys think. Haven't really thought about it before, but personally, viewing angles don't mean anything to me... once you set up your desk, the angle doesn't matter (unless you're doing acrobatics while sitting at your PC). The only real pain is when they don't have an adjustable stand.😁

Robert Rodriguez2 said:+1
I don't see the logic in picking a "cheap and crappy" panel when you can grab an LCD/OLED one for the same price, or sometimes even less.

Looks like everyone jumped to conclusions immediately. I don't have a solid opinion on this yet, which is why I'm asking for clarification. This is actually my first time looking into the differences between LCD/TN/OLED and other types of panels.😬

And I think I might have been looking at the "wrong" TN monitors, considering they all seem to be nearly 60% more expensive than LCD monitors.🤣 🤦
Hey, can anyone help me out? in Desktops ·
crimsonstag84 said:So, do you already own it, or are you looking to buy?

If you're buying, keep in mind that's just a TN panel. You'd probably be better off grabbing something with an LCD or OLED panel, though they do run a bit higher in price.

For instance,

I've been wondering about this for a while, but I just haven't found the right moment to ask 😵... why does everyone on this forum seem to prefer LCD over TN? Is it strictly about the "color," or is there something else to it? 😬

EDIT: (and the viewing angles)

Grab a paperclip and straighten it out until you've got one long, straight wire. Stick that wire into the little hole right under the tray while you're pressing the release button...

Advice for buying a gaming PC! in Desktops ·
Roger Mitchell4 said:I'm just looking at the system requirements for GTA 5 and I see it needs Windows 7 or 8 64-bit.
What's the deal? Why can't you use 32-bit?

It’s because 32-bit Windows can only handle about 3.2GB of RAM, and this game needs more than that. 64-bit doesn't have that cap, so if you're planning on playing anything modern, switching to 64-bit "Windows" is pretty much mandatory.😬
Issues with my new PC build in Desktops ·
Mark Gray13 said:Hey there! I just picked up a new PC yesterday. Every time I try to boot it up, I get this error message: REBOOT AND SELECT PROPER BOOT DEVICE OR INSERT BOOT MEDIA AND PRESS A KEY

It sounds like you bought a machine without an OS installed, or at least that's what the error is telling you. If you already popped in a disc to install it and you're still seeing this, you probably just need to head into the BIOS and make sure the CD/DVD drive is set as one of the boot options...

You didn't give us much to work with here...

Brian Campbell36 said:Exactly, and if your motherboard isn't better by ten generations of chipsets—though I was really just thinking two generations

Where did I say it was better by ten generations? 😵 I actually wrote "second" generation, and honestly, I wasn't even talking about the chipset; I meant the materials and the tech used to build the board itself😬

Look, stop stressing, it’s not a bad board👍...but with all this negativity you're throwing at it, I wouldn't be surprised if a lightning bolt hit a mailman and fried both him and the hardware at the same time🤣

Brian Campbell36 said:"Ultimately the only mark against the ASUS Z77 Extreme4 is the ultra-thin PCB."

We aren't even talking about the same board... my bad, sorry.

You're bringing up the old LGA 1155 Z77 Extreme4, but I'm talking about the latest LGA 1150 Z97 Extreme4. That's a completely different generation of ASRock's boards...
Gill01's Corner in Desktops ·
I'm not quite sure what you mean since I don't have a Z97 Extreme4, but my Z97 Pro4 feels solid as a rock (it actually feels indestructible when you touch it 😬) and I haven't noticed it being any thinner than what other brands put out... where are you getting that from? 🤷

Let's bring this back down to earth for a second...

1 x Intel Core i5-4690K Processor (3.50GHz,1MB,6MB,88 W,1150) Box
1 x ASRock Z97 EXTREME4, s1150, Intel® Z97
1 x DDR3 8GB (2x4GB) Kingston, 1866MHz, CL10, HyperX Fury
1 x TOSHIBA 1TB, 7200rpm, SATA 6 Gb/s, 32MB, DT01ACA100
1 x Intel 120GB SSD 530, 2.5", SATA III-600, R/W:540/480MB/s
1 x ASUS STRIX-GTX970-DC2OC-4GD5, Nvidia GeForce, GTX 970, PCIe 3.0
1 x Fractal Design Define R4 Titanium Grey - Window, Mid Tower 1
1 x Seasonic S12G-550 Gold, 550 W, active PFC
1 x LG GH24NS, DVD±RW, 24x DVD±R ,8x DL , 40x CD-R
1 x Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo,2011,1366/1156/775/AM3/ 626g,13-32dB

$3225

The build above was put together using parts I pulled from PCPartPicker just to compare things fairly. Here, a setup like this costs an absolute fortune—it's highway robbery. In the USA, this totals about $1,167.54 $2533.

If you factor in that price plus the sheer level of service and standards they have over there... honestly, what can I say? If you're smart, you'll know better.😛
