@Jamie Davis9/">@@Jamie Davis9: Your water heater will get fixed, don't sweat it. I spent nearly four years heating water on a camping stove just to have something warm to wash with, and yet here I am—still standing and relatively healthy. 😬

By the way, ever since I started being the resident minority on this forum, random usernames have stopped sliding into my DMs. Every cloud has a silver lining, I suppose. 😁

To be honest, my wall took the biggest hit in the entire building. I’m up in the penthouse, so luckily it isn't a load-bearing wall—just a partition between my unit and the neighbor's attic space. It’s likely going to have to come down so we can rebuild it from scratch, but I'll deal with that headache when it comes.
As far as I can tell, it’s all just white noise on my end, but he seems to be falling apart.
It’s critical that we don't see any visible damage anywhere else on the building, and the roof needs to be structurally sound, too.
We’re still waiting on the official appraisers to weigh in, but honestly, I’m betting their numbers will land right around the same spot.
That's it.
On the other hand, that little training program was a total disaster, at least from everything I managed to see. Honestly, I’m not sure they can ever recover from this one.

Folks, I just headed down to the local corner store, and honestly? The streets are eerily empty. It feels like a total madhouse out there.

In his name,
A little bit of life. 🙄

I'm just relieved it wasn't any more serious than it was.

I was at every single one of his shows back in Sarajevo. Now, I'll just have a shot of something spicy and lean into the melancholy. 😍
Maybe it helps as a preventative measure. The only downside would be accidentally catching the bug and becoming an alcoholic. 😁

Keeping the same rhythm.

Anyway, damn it, I have some savings put aside, so let the devil take it. 😬 It's the same for me as it is for everyone else.
In any case, it was nasty; it looked like my apartment was literally going to split in half, and I had already said my goodbyes to life. 🙄 🤦

Once I realized I actually survived, I told myself, "Come on, you little mess," everything is fine—from this moment on, I am officially not some cursed secret agent like James Bond 😁 #hvalazagrebe : rozi: <3

I hope the damage isn't too bad. I'm sorry this happened to you. 🙂

Though, you are a mess, so I don't know why I'm even worrying about you. 😛

Angelenos, I hope you're all doing well. 🙂

By the way, Jamie Davis9, is "to consider" actually standard American English?

Jamie Davis9 said:Look, our little school hasn't actually gone on strike for a single day during this whole period. For most of us, we aren't even under the Department of Education's direct jurisdiction. Plus, that disputed coefficient makes a bigger difference for us (though there’s much more at stake than just that number), and given how sensitive our work is, we couldn't exactly stop watching our own kids.
But today, we cut class short and headed down to the plaza to show some solidarity with my colleagues in the system where I've spent the last 15 years. You bet we did! 👍 🙂

It feels like there's a strike happening constantly over here. Honestly, I can't tell anymore what's truly political and what isn't, but I stand behind the fight for the rights of all educators.

Lovely duo...

How to be a good person without being a doormat in Psychology ·
Christian Wells3 said:Hey, hope this PDF works okay.

If not, feel free to move it.

My question is: How can I be a good person without getting walked all over? People have taken advantage of my kindness and naivety way too many times.

The last time it happened was just a few months ago.

I was living in a small rental apartment. There was this older janitor in the building (he had some special needs). He was a great guy, seriously, he always helped me out, wasn't making much money, and lived in this run-down little shack. Anyway, I suddenly had a death in the family and ended up moving into a much bigger place. Since the old place was furnished, I told my former landlord he could give my stuff (TV, fridge, bed) to the janitor.

A few days ago, I called my old landlord because a coworker needed a place to crash for a couple of nights. Not only did he charge her an insane amount ( $333 for just 3 days, when I used to pay $200 plus utilities), but he actually sold all my stuff and didn't give a single thing to the janitor...

There have been plenty of other times where I've been used and ripped off.

What I want to know is, how do you carry yourself in life so things like this don't happen? I'm the type of person who would give someone the shirt off my back to help them through a hard time, but I almost always end up getting played.

The real issue here is how you define "being good." In the scenario you described, you would have actually done a good deed if you had just verified that your boss followed through on his end of the deal—but you didn't. Your intentions were pure, sure, but that’s a far cry from actually doing something good.

You can afford to be naive once or twice, maybe even three times, but anything beyond that isn't kindness—it's just plain stupidity.
I'm not close with my mom in Psychology & Therapy ·
ruggedcyclist64 said:I’m starting this thread here because, frankly, I have nowhere else to turn.

The issue is my relationship with my mother—or rather, the total lack of one. I’m in my early twenties, still in college, and living at home. My mom takes care of us; she cooks, cleans, manages the house, and so on. Both she and my dad have provided me with everything financially, and for that, I am genuinely grateful.

The problem is that my relationship with her feels more like being roommates. There’s zero intimacy—we don't actually *know* each other. She doesn't know my friends, the struggles I face, or even my love life, simply because we never talk about those things. Our conversations are strictly functional: what’s for dinner, what needs to be picked up at Target, etc. She’s never even attempted to get to know me, build a bond, or ask how my life is going. I can't say if she’s ever even hugged me or told me she loves me.

When I went through puberty, she just handed me a box of pads—no explanation, no guidance. And don't even get me started on dating or sex; I had to learn everything from school textbooks and magazines.

I’ve always been more introverted, and during my teen years, I struggled with deep insecurities and low self-esteem, which made making friends difficult. Looking back, I think that was largely because I never heard a single encouraging word from her—never felt that sense of support.

Whenever I run into trouble, I don't turn to her—not that I even feel the need to, since we aren't built that way. There was a period when I started college and fell into a bit of a depressive slump; she didn't notice. Not even once.

It hits hard when I see my friends talking to their moms—how they can tell them anything, how their mothers are their biggest support systems. It’s painful. I never talk about it with anyone because, honestly, it’s embarrassing. We don't fight—which might be why our relationship isn't "toxic" like some others—but we aren't at war either. We're just... nothing.

We had one blowout argument where I finally laid it all out for her. She burst into tears and seemed completely blindsided by what I said, but even after that, nothing changed. The dynamic remained exactly the same.

I suspect this is just how she was raised—that her own mother was distant, so this "normalcy" makes sense to her. But to me, it’s nonsensical. Who wouldn't want a close bond with their child? How can someone be satisfied with such a hollow connection?

Even now, I find it hard to form deep connections with people, and I’m increasingly convinced it stems from my relationship with her. It weighs on me. At this point, I don't even have the desire to try and bridge the gap anymore; it feels like a lost cause. Instead, I find myself wishing I had been born to a different mother—someone I could actually talk to. I wonder if I would be a different person emotionally if I’d had that closeness.

I realize she’s provided for me financially, and I know there are people dealing with physical or psychological abuse, or constant fighting, so I feel somewhat guilty bringing this up as a "major" problem. I believe she loves me in her own way, but she never shows it. To me, that emotional component matters far more than any material thing a parent can provide.

Does anyone else have this kind of relationship with their mother? Does it bother you? Is there even any point in trying to fix it if she’s fundamentally uninterested?

What is your relationship with your mother like?

This is genuinely heartbreaking, but you can't force someone to be emotionally warm if they are fundamentally cold. What is your relationship with your father like? Do you have any siblings? Sometimes, a bond with another family member—like an aunt, a grandmother, a sister, or a father—can be much warmer than whatever you have with your mother.

Forcing someone to participate in something that should be a personal choice is just tacky. Especially in a professional setting where you’re all there because of work, not because you're a tight-knit group of friends.

Back in my day, we used to swap gifts and pass around homemade cookies, but thankfully, those traditions have mostly faded away.
