Eric Rogers39 said:-sorry, but please, tell me how I'm indirectly pushing them toward suicide by posting this...

It used to be people thought talking about depression or suicide just encouraged it. Turns out, research shows the exact opposite. Actually bringing up suicide (or homicide) creates an environment where depression can actually be treated and those tragedies can be prevented...

If your Pap smear comes back normal, there’s really no point in testing for HPV.
Besides, you’re getting that Pap done once a year anyway.

Let's say the HPV test actually comes back positive—so what? What are we even going to treat it with? There isn't an effective cure out there. They only step in if the HPV is positive AND the Pap shows actual changes. It's the exact same protocol if the Pap is abnormal but we don't know the HPV status. Basically, just sticking to the annual Pap is enough...

Now, if you're pregnant or have had new partners in the last year, then sure, you might get tested for chlamydia or gonorrhea. Otherwise, if there's some kind of discharge—whether you noticed it yourself or the doctor spots it during the exam—they can run a culture and treat whatever is going on...

A clinical exam probably won't turn up much, besides maybe some blood in the cervical canal. What you really need to get done is a quantitative beta HCG test and potentially an ultrasound. They aren't wrong, either—even if you're right in the middle of a miscarriage, there isn't much else they can do... maybe just rest.

Ashley Perez33 said:I need help. I got my period on November 9th just like usual, so I didn't think much of it. But when it still hadn't stopped by Friday, I went to see my doctor... usually mine never lasts more than four days and isn't heavy, but this was different.

So, looks like you had bleeding for seven days, maybe even nine? What happened after November 18th?

Ashley Perez33 said:She prescribed some vaginal suppositories (she didn't do an exam, which is pretty standard since I'm bleeding),

What kind of suppositories? For what?

Ashley Perez33 said:Basically, she told me to use them regardless of the bleeding and to take a test. She said I could do a test to see if I was actually pregnant, just to make sure nothing "passed" and caused an infection.

Wait, what?

Ashley Perez33 said:I took a test immediately (we've been trying to conceive for almost a year now) and it was positive.

congratulate! 🙂
But look, even with a positive test, if you've been bleeding for seven days or more, there's a real chance you might lose the pregnancy. You really should get a quantitative beta HCG blood test, and then do it again in a few days to see if the levels are rising—which would mean the pregnancy is holding steady—or dropping, which would mean it's not. At this early stage, there's nothing anyone can do to stop a miscarriage. Maybe just bed rest or treating whatever else is going on, like diabetes, infections, or dehydration...

Ashley Perez33 said:but I decided to hold off on the tampons until this bleeding stops, so I'm gonna retake the test to see where things stand. (It’s not heavy, but it's definitely not nothing—maybe two small pads a day... Anyone else dealt with this?? What should I even do??? 😢

You probably got those metronidazole suppositories for bacterial vaginosis. BV is basically just when the bacteria in your system get out of whack, which can lead to discharge or even preterm labor. It's usually an easy fix, though.

Since we're all just guessing here, you should really just check back in with your doctor.
Ear cleaning tips? in Health ·
Usually, I just tell my patients to stick to using their finger or a washcloth—basically whatever they can reach comfortably—with some lukewarm water and soap.

And honestly? Skip those little baby swabs for your ears. Doesn't matter if you're an infant or an adult, they shouldn't be used. All they do is shove the wax deeper, which just ends up creating a plug and messing with your hearing...

If the wax has already hardened, your best bet is to see a doctor. They might be able to clear it out themselves, or they’ll prescribe some ear drops to soften everything up. Once it's soft, it either clears out on its own or makes it way easier for the doc to flush the canal out properly.

Amiodarone and tetracycline are the usual suspects when it comes to sun sensitivity, but the rest? Not so much...
Chest pain/lung pain help in Health ·
I recognize those symptoms—sounds like pleuritic pain to me. I can't give you an official diagnosis, though. And why isn't this person just heading to a doctor?

Pleuritic pain usually crops up during heavy coughing fits—think bronchitis, pneumonia, or even worse stuff—but it also shows up with pleural effusion or a pneumothorax. That last one can happen from a violent coughing spell if someone already has COPD, or even just in young, tall, skinny guys...

Without a physical exam and some X-rays, there’s no way to tell if we're looking at something life-threatening or something totally trivial.
How to lose weight and get back in shape? in Health ·
Thomas Bishop64 said:Hey everyone! So, here’s the deal. My job keeps me glued to a desk for up to 10 hours a day, which hasn't been great for my physique. Exactly one year ago, I was sitting at a solid 143 pounds, but now I've climbed up to about 163. I'm looking for some guidance on where to actually start with exercise, how to eventually maintain a healthy weight, and what a sustainable diet should look like.

I’m big on doing things the right way, so I'm definitely not interested in starving myself or jumping on those fad diets that promise miracles in a month.

Thanks.🙂

Benjamin Murphy2 said:just a quick correction here... it’s not just kids and it’s not just an Asian thing. It can pop up anytime up to age 50, or even later, across all races—it's just more common in the Asian community. The whole thing is rooted in vasculitis, which is basically inflammation of the small blood vessels throughout your body. They don't really know the exact cause, but the theory is it's some kind of reaction to "superantigens" from certain bacteria. It can lead to some pretty nasty complications involving the heart's blood vessels, aseptic meningitis, and a few other issues too. Usually, it's managed pretty well with high doses of immunoglobulin and aspirin. We see several cases of this every year at our infectious disease clinic in NYC.

Just to reiterate, the disease mostly shows up in kids under five, primarily in Asian populations (USA most often), though it does happen in other races too, just rarely...

But let's be real, these aren't even full-blown recipes—they're just clever little ideas for sneaking more veggies into your daily meals.
Plus, an omelet takes maybe five to ten minutes tops. Most of the time, you're just waiting on the kettle to boil anyway! 😁

👍

Anyone else carry veggie snacks around for later? Like carrots, bell peppers, celery sticks... stuff like that.

How can you be so sure you aren't allergic to anything? You even bother getting tested?

The symptoms you're talking about are textbook allergic rhinitis. It's pretty easy to be reacting to dust mites or whatever happens to be blooming right now—grass, mold, pollen, who knows... Once the season shifts in a few days, your allergies will probably just chill out on their own...

Larry Lewis2 said:Just a quick heads-up for anyone listening: raw fruit might not be the best move if you're dealing with a sensitive stomach. Just my two cents.🙂

Look, people dealing with weight issues are definitely going to see some benefits from a veggie-heavy diet.

The only real catch with veggies—maybe more with the raw stuff—is for anyone struggling with bad gastritis or gallbladder issues. Also, if you aren't used to eating any greens at all, you’ll probably need to ease into adding them to your meals.

For the rest of us? The takeaway is simple: eat your damn vegetables...

Matthew Fox4 said:If I’m following correctly, bluedriver2 is basically looking for suggestions or tips on what kind of veggies to prep and how much to actually pile onto the plate during daily meals. (Looks like the actual questionnaire got left off at the end of the post, though!)

Honestly, I think the question is totally valid. I just wonder if it’s being asked in the right corner of the forum. If you ask a nutritionist, they’ll obviously tell you to eat more vegetables and fruit—that falls squarely under the Health category. But once people start giving specific advice on *how* to cook them, the whole conversation starts drifting toward Food and Cooking.

Maybe it would be better to cross-post this over to the Foodie section? People there chat about meals constantly, so I bet there’d be way more practical advice. I mean, logically speaking, over here you usually expect talk about diets, supplement stacks, or those "detox" cleanses... 😉

Exactly. 🙂

So, let's hear it: veggies with every single meal...

Real dental student here. 🙂
It’s the classic med school trap—you read about a symptom and suddenly you’re convinced you have it. Honestly, even when I’m looking down throats at the clinic, seeing tooth indentations on the inside of someone's cheek... it doesn't phase me, and it shouldn't phase the patient either. Good luck with the studies...

Are you actually flossing? It’s the number one reason people deal with gum irritation and gingivitis. Not to scare you, but there's a real link between gum disease and issues like heart valve problems or coronary artery disease. Just some food for thought...
Missing periods: What's your experience? in Health ·
briskeagle5 said:So I went to my OB-GYN, and they basically told me everything looks fine from a medical standpoint. Apparently, the missed period is just stress...

Look, the most obvious reason for a missed period is PREGNANCY.
Only way less often is it some hormone imbalance triggered by stress (like an anovulatory cycle) or maybe PCOS. After all that, then you start looking at those super rare stuff...
Kennedy's syndrome in Health ·
It’s a childhood illness that pops up most often among kids of Asian descent, though it can hit other races too, every once in a while.

We're talking a fever that sticks around for five days (hitting 100.4°F or higher), a rash covering the body, palms, and soles, plus some stuff on the mucous membranes like the tongue. Heart complications can get pretty scary. Treatment usually means a hospital stay involving IVIG and high doses of aspirin.

Kisses, sounds like your nose is driving you crazy... allergy season?

What’s your doctor saying about it? You using any over-the-counter antihistamines yet?
Maybe some trendy new diet is calling itself the "doctor's plan" or whatever... But honestly, the medical community isn't really backing any single fad. They just tell you the same old stuff: eat a variety of things, load up on veggies, go for lean proteins, whole grains, healthy fats, and watch your portions. And yeah, you actually have to move your body too.
