I’m looking for some guidance on upgrading my current rig, specifically to get better performance in games. I'm trying to run things like PUBG, but right now, it won't even launch 😁. My budget for a GPU and RAM upgrade is roughly $300.

Here’s what I’m working with at the moment:
Intel Core i5- 4460 3.2GHz
4gb DDR3 Kingston HyperX Fury
Nvidia GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2gb
The motherboard is an Asrock h81m-dgs

It’s nothing fancy, but honestly, it did its job until recently. I’d like to squeeze a bit more life out of this machine before I commit to building a completely new system, which just isn't in the cards for me right now.

I mainly went because I’ve been feeling pretty listless and exhausted most of the time—just a low-level sense of depression, even though there isn't an obvious reason for it. There’s nothing controversial about a woman not wanting her sleep interrupted by a barking dog. She exercised her rights, she filed the complaint, and now it’s up to the owner to either keep the dog inside during those hours or face the consequences. I’m looking to put together a new rig specifically and exclusively for gaming, and I’d really appreciate some guidance from the community. Because of how I need to handle the payment, everything has to be sourced through Best Buy. Budget-wise, I have $1500 if we're just talking about the tower itself (though I might be able to stretch it to $5,000 if we include a monitor), plus maybe another hundred or so if it helps bridge a gap.

I currently have an old 21-inch monitor from the Stone Age, and part of me feels like it would be a waste of money to pair a high-end GPU with something that outdated. On the other hand, I could always pick up a decent monitor in a few months. Since this build won't be getting any major upgrades for a while, I'd love to hear your pros and cons regarding component selection versus performance if I decide to include a monitor in this price bracket right now.

Ultimately, my goal is to play pretty much anything released recently or coming out in the next couple of years. I want a smooth experience without constantly fiddling with settings to fix stuttering, and obviously, I want things to look great. 😉 I'm thinking along the lines of running Star Wars at max settings (especially during those massive 40-player raids), Battlefield 4, Rust, and stuff like that.

This topic really caught my eye, mainly because I found myself in a situation very similar to what the author’s child is going through, so I’ve been playing the whole scenario back in my head.

Back then, I was in second grade, and I had English classes at school; they would be either first thing in the morning or right at the end of the day. One time, out of nowhere, the teacher announced that we were all going out for ice cream. Since I had school in the morning, I had already blown my lunch money during the break; my grandparents weren't exactly handing out cash either—they’d give me exactly five bucks for a sandwich—and my grandma would have dinner waiting for me at home anyway, so I didn't have any extra money to spare.

I went up to the teacher and told her that I’d honestly rather just go home, since I wasn't really in the mood for ice cream (truthfully, I just felt awkward about the whole thing). She started in with this lecture about how she couldn't just let me go home because she was responsible for me and blah blah blah, insisting that I essentially had to come along. So, reluctantly, I finally told her what the actual issue was. She just told me not to worry—she was paying.

We ended up at the local McDonald's for that tasteless ice cream that cost about three bucks back then. I remember being incredibly bored there. 🤷 There we all were, sitting around licking our ice cream, while I was thinking about the computer waiting for me at home. Oh, the joy. 🙄 Basically, I kept thinking the ice cream ordeal was over, only to worry that during the next class, she might call me out in front of everyone over those three dollars, which honestly made me quite defensive. It wasn't even about the embarrassment in front of the class, more about the sheer absurdity of the whole situation; it's hard to put into words even now. 🤷

I felt awkward telling my parents what happened, so I tried to justify asking them for those three dollars, since I always received the exact same amount of allowance. Naturally, that didn't fly. When my mom realized what was happening, she lost it and wrote a letter to the teacher (essentially asking who she thought she was, leading us around like that...) and included $2.25, the price of a cone. The teacher didn't say anything after that, but she didn't return the change either.

I know I've written a novel here, but my advice to the author is to try to shield her son from this story as soon as possible. There's no sense in him bearing the consequences of someone else's assumptions and unknown motives. Just sit down, talk to the teacher, and settle this once and for all.

I don't really see the point either. It’s one thing when a band with their own original material throws in a cover here and there just to mix things up, but dedicating their entire setlist to playing someone else's songs? That feels pretty pointless to me.
