Lisa Davis46 said:So, are we just picking albums for the hell of it now or what? Seriously... can someone please walk me through why we needed this whole sudden buildup? What is even happening here... and did you guys honestly get that bored?

Everything is going exactly by the rules we set! The whole point here is just to dive into these albums together... even if they aren't everyone's cup of tea. Honestly, that’s the best part because it gives us so much more to actually talk about! Plus, we have this huge mountain of older albums sitting there that barely anyone has even mentioned yet. We can always dig those up and start a conversation, right?... 🙂 And we're still just sitting here waiting for one of this week's slots to finally open up... seriously...

quietbison86 said:Wait, so when’s the actual deadline for opening a thread?... I can't remember if I missed it or what...

There’s no hard deadline on this, but honestly? You should probably jump on it ASAP. Especially since everyone on the forums seems way more pumped up and ready to chat over the weekend... 😉

Dennis Hall41 said:No biggie, but personally, I wouldn't put "Album of the Week" right in the title... feels a bit off, doesn't it?

Exactly, leave out the 🙂
prefix!

It's official! 🙂 The threads were kicked off by quietbison86 and Jessica Morris6. I was actually about to nominate two debut artists, but since it's been a minute since Jessica Morris6 started a thread, let's go with a popular vote instead—even if it's our first one this year.

Look, the whole point here is to review whatever we’re actually vibing with lately. It’s pretty much expected that classic rock or those legendary cult albums will pop up constantly, but even from the very beginning, we knew things wouldn't just stay stuck in one genre.

I really want to see a massive variety of styles. Honestly, the fact that some stuff might not be everyone's cup of tea is exactly why this works—it gives us more to talk about! (That’s why suggestions are totally welcome). I personally cast my vote for Paul Simon, but Jay already had a ton of votes, which is pretty significant. Same goes for Slowdive.

And finally, just to clear the air on something a few people have noticed... the distinction between "Pop" and "Root" isn't strictly about the music itself, but more about how we chat on the different subforums. Technically, you could start a thread for Lady Gaga, Rihanna, or even Nada Mamula on either side, but you'd probably expect a totally different vibe in the comments depending on where you post.

Hey, does anyone else remember this movie? I still vividly recall what the marketing blitz was like when it first hit theaters. Honestly, it’s always been one of those weaker entries from Disney or Pixar...

That Lemonov blues track totally throws off the vibe of this whole depressing sequence😁

Hang with us and life gets longer! Grab a drink with us and you'll never be bored! 🙂

This is the first and only album from a folk musician who wasn't really making waves back in his day... man, he had one of the most tragic, heartbreaking lives in the whole music industry. Honestly, I didn't even stumble upon him until one of his songs popped up on the soundtrack for Joker (2019). And hey, picking that track for the movie definitely wasn't an accident! (Rolling Stone)

Oh, that's just a low-budget short film version...

Honestly, thank goodness they actually gave him enough cash to do it right! 😁

The original version is definitely The Cabin in the Woods 😁

We went ahead and manually stripped those invalid points. We actually did the exact same thing once before when another user handled it, and everything worked out just fine... Anyway, this week's fresh releases are coming from Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, and Modest Mouse.

I don't think we need to go throwing anyone out just yet! The proposal is totally fine as it stands, and if we end up with enough votes, the person who suggested it can just start their own thread for it anyway... keeps things simple!

That said, we really feel like this is the absolute last time someone tries to rig a poll like this. We take these kinds of unfair moves super seriously, and honestly, we hope you guys do too.

And hey, regarding those posts you mentioned, Dennis Hall41, they’re still right there... unless the server decides otherwise, I guess! 😁

Just so we're all on the same page, voting with clones isn't happening. Seriously... 🙂

Since we just finished up a whole week of post-rock, I figured it’s about time we dive into some grunge 😁

Dennis Hall41 said:Same here! I’m honestly wondering if we’re going to see more suggestions than comments again... or if maybe it's time to just flip the script entirely and focus on starting more topics instead of just replying to them. What do you guys think?...😁

And check out what Lisa Davis46 is up to... Neil Young...Man, albums are dropping so fast lately... I can barely keep up! Honestly, I'm just totally drowning in all this new music... 😁

I mean, I totally get where you're coming from—we definitely churn through these posts faster than we can actually sit down and listen to them! But then again, we’ve got such a massive backlog of topics that anyone can jump in whenever they feel like it... And hey, Fadil, you were away from the forum for a bit anyway, so you weren't exactly keeping up with the listening or the comments during your hiatus... 🙂

I mean, you're totally right—if people just chime in whenever they feel like it, then it can't really be called "Album of the Week," but honestly? I don't think that's a bad thing at all! Look at Coltrane right now... he's only got six posts going. But those aren't just random comments; they’re six incredibly high-quality deep dives from folks who actually know their stuff and have something real to contribute. That's the beauty of it! People can come back in two years, read those insights, and still learn something new. And hey, anyone else can always jump in and add their own spin whenever they want...

I mean, sure, using Coltrane as an example is just one way to look at it, but honestly? This goes for pretty much any great record. Sometimes you really have to lean into that "less is more" philosophy... it just works! Though, obviously, nothing beats a heated debate over those polarizing albums that get everyone fired up and picking sides. Like that last one from Charlie, for instance... man, people had thoughts!

That’s exactly how you should be thinking when you're picking out album suggestions! If you actually want a real conversation going, you’ve gotta throw out something that stirs the pot a little... give us something that might spark a debate or get people disagreeing. I mean, at least you aren't afraid to stir things up a bit! Whether it's through the suggestion itself or just how you frame the topic... just keep it spicy... 😬

cosmiccobra2 said:Maybe we should just set up a tie-breaker right after the first round finishes? Like, only include the albums that actually won the vote... what do you guys think? That could be fun! 🤔

So, we’re using a randomizer for the Movie of the Week—which basically turns it into a Movie of the Month situation—but honestly, there’s just no point trying to squeeze two movies into one slot... it gets messy. We thought about doing the same thing with albums at first, but we ended up just letting everyone through if there was a tie early on. Sometimes you really don't want to skip an album because you feel like it totally earned its spot as the theme, especially when the votes are already piling up for it... it just feels wrong to pass it up! 🙂

Nomadland (2020) in Movies ·
I mean, I don't really see this as a direct hit on capitalism, even if you want to read it that way... since the whole plot basically kicks off in the wake of that big recession from about a decade ago. But honestly? It feels more personal. Fern just decides to embrace the nomad life on her own terms after losing her husband and getting laid off when her company folded. She doesn't even seem interested in going back to her old life, even when David—one of those nomads who chose to settle down with his son's family—offers her a place to stay.
Thoughts on Pixar's Soul (2020)? in Movies ·
The plot is pretty predictable and things get a bit messy, but honestly? It’s got enough heart and warmth to make it a solid watch.

Just a quick heads-up, though—he actually walked away with two Academy Awards yesterday! One was totally expected for Best Animated Feature, and the other was for the score.
