How do you defeat evil and the people behind it? in Psychology ·
You can't truly defeat evil or bad people; you just have to distance yourself from them. But if they come after you, you absolutely have to strike back hard enough to make sure they regret it—so they take their little games somewhere else, somewhere where the roses don't have thorns.

Honestly, the way you guys are attacking this young woman is embarrassing. She explained her situation perfectly. She was with this guy for years, and during that time, they explored their dreams and desires together, only to realize those specific things might not hold the same appeal 30 or 40 years down the line. It’s the same for you—whether it's grabbing a beer after work, staying up all night, or just hanging out with your pets, those things won't stay exciting forever. You’ll find new interests. If someone's new interest happens to be having a child, that isn't strange at all for someone who has already lived through their younger years. Your defensiveness over someone simply pointing out that people evolve is ridiculous. It reminds me of those intense music debates: "I listen to heavy metal, and heaven forbid some hipster suggests I might want to listen to jazz in ten years!" No one is forcing a child on anyone; they are just saying that as humans, we change. That shift might lead to wanting kids, or it might not.

redscout46 said:"Bitterness"... isn't that just the convenient label used around here whenever someone happens to hold a perspective that doesn't align with yours? 🤦
Neither brightviper22, nor I, nor anyone else in this group actually has anything or anyone to be bitter about... unlike you two lost souls.

Just be careful those lungs don't get bitter—imagine if they were your child's lungs you were looking after. Or is that not even a thought you'd have?

redscout46, you’re a modern woman. You work hard, and after a long day on the job, you’ve earned the right to unwind with a few cigarettes and a guy. You check all the boxes for what a serious woman should be. Honestly, you gave me a chance to play the philosopher and share my thoughts on these modern, driven women. But redscout46, I’m just not feeling it. You work, you look effortless with a cigarette in hand, and you appreciate good sex. That sounds like a lot, yet I’m still not convinced. Is it just me, or does the idea of you being my mistress feel a little bit boring?

brightviper22 said:Maybe you should take something to calm down? Why are you acting like a manic runner, getting so caught up in these forum posts? It's ridiculous how emotionally attached someone can get to an online conversation. 🤣

I’m just playing around with the ideas being thrown out here. Having a kid isn't some massive life crisis for me, but it's a much bigger deal than smoking cigarettes or having sex. My nearly immobile grandpa can smoke, and plenty of guys have sex—not exactly groundbreaking achievements. These are silly comparisons. Why not go record an album with George Michael and say, "I'm too cool to deal with a baby right now"? She thinks she's too cool for a kid because she'd just want to smoke after work and hook up with her partner in peace. That's like saying I want to eat for an hour, enjoy my food, and I'm just "too cool" to be bothered by a crying baby.

redscout46 said:🥱 The fact that you're so limited that you failed to grasp my irony is entirely your own problem. No, it isn't just about smoking cigarettes; I have plenty of other things to occupy my time. This was meant to be a banal, simplified description, but clearly, someone with your specific intellectual capacity simply can't wrap their head around it. ☕

Alright, let's hear something actually intellectual from your life besides smoking and hooking up. Go ahead. Just please don't tell me, "I listen to Pink Floyd and having a baby is a major distraction during this intellectual pursuit."

What kind of shallow excuses are these? "I just want to get home from work, light up a cigarette, and have sex without anyone yelling at me." It’s as if those are somehow more creative pursuits than raising a child. Unless you're in a rock band with a career more demanding than changing damn diapers, what are we talking about here? You'll light a smoke and have some quiet time in bed—such a massive deal. The reasoning is just incredible: "A kid would get in my way because then I couldn't sit in my armchair, smoke, and sleep around without interruptions." As if you've written a masterpiece or recorded a legendary album and are far too creative to be bothered by a baby because your head is bursting with new ideas. Honestly, could you at least come up with reasons that show a slightly higher intellectual level than smoking after work and wanting peace and quiet? People create historical works of art and don't let dirty diapers or a crying infant stop them, yet apparently, a baby's cry is going to ruin your ability to smoke a cigarette and have some intimacy. Don't try to sell me those lines.

redscout46 said:Well, obviously women have to suffer for it. Unlike someone like Alexander Adams94, who probably just stuffs his head under a pillow whenever the kid starts wailing. That’s exactly why everyone is so entitled and arrogant these days.
But then again, there really is nothing more beautiful in this life than one's own comfort.

But what kind of support will your kids actually provide when you're older, instead of just letting you fade away in some nursing home?

I once ended up with some tiny kittens that had just been born. I didn't even realize my cat was pregnant; one morning she was just meowing under my duvet, and by the end of the day, she’d had four kittens. I also spent some time pushing a baby around in a stroller—not mine, obviously—and it felt pretty good. I actually got along better with that baby than I do with all these adult complications.

I’d much rather bury my head in a pillow to drown out a screaming kid than have to deal with the empty rhetoric on TV and the endless shouting matches from the idiots over at The New York Times.

Isn't there something incredibly intimate about those quiet moments? You watch the baby settle into the crib, then you pull your partner close to you, catching that faint scent of coconut in the air. Then the baby stirs, she gets up to soothe them, and when she finally climbs back into bed, you're just left with the lingering scent of her hair against your chest.

redscout46 said:ruggedtinker9 is a king among men. 👍 We honestly need more people with your kind of perspective out there in the world.

As for me, I found myself sitting there, staring at all this, and ended up lighting up a cigarette just to deal with the weight of it all. Because, let’s be honest, if we’re truly going to embrace the radical side of things, I suppose even the scent of a toddler's mess might smell better than this smoke. MMMM 🤦

Sure, let's go radical. You have to wash your backside and scrub your hands because, let's face it, we deal with crap quite often. But showering up just to smell like a pack of Marlboros fifteen minutes later? That’s a pretty funny way to define freedom. It would be much easier if some secret government agency watched over us to make sure we all smelled like a floral arrangement instead.

It’s one thing for the OP to be stubborn about her stance, but she fails to see that cleaning up after kids is actually more productive than smoking. Besides, baby food smells a whole lot better than the cigarette smoke she proudly carries home from work every day. Honestly, I’d much rather have a kid than spend my life smelling like an ashtray; wouldn't that make life a lot more interesting?
She had the guts to tell Gary the truth
he finally had to face reality
for years she kept typing
hoping to finally hold her baby
some people argued with her
because their home felt empty
but the lonely lady's era
is over now that she's a new mom
she'd rather die twice
than sit alone drinking in front of a screen
arguments flared up in the thread
but nobody was named godmother
now the sauce has arrived

Music taste is a real headache for me. Even though I listen to pretty mainstream stuff, I always seem to run into people who just don't get it. I didn't care much at first, but over the years, it’s started to get frustrating. Honestly, I’d be a lot happier if I could just talk about music with people on the same wavelength. It’s been an issue for years now. I constantly meet people who want to geek out over music that I think is absolute garbage; then I’m stuck choosing between playing nice or snapping and being a jerk. Wouldn't it be great to encounter people who either don't care about music at all, or if I'm lucky, people who actually listen to what I like? For years, I've met people obsessed with genres I can't stand—they're boring and pushy, and eventually, I lose my cool and tell them where to shove it. It's a cycle. It's not like I go out looking for music debates, but I have bad luck and always end up with these fanatics who are obsessed with music that I find terrible. I have a friend who won't stop badgering me about some obscure indie rock bands, or I'll go on a date with someone who is strictly into hip-hop and acts like her life mission is finding a rapper to marry. Lately, I've realized how much people really push their music on me, whether in friendships or dating. It's always some fanatic. They push me until I snap, things get ugly, and then they play the victim. I tell them to stop bothering me with it, and they act shocked, like, "I didn't do anything." I don't know, to me, every new person feels like a potential music freak (one who likes everything I hate). Looking back, it’s been the same story year after year. I'm not exactly a saint; I have very specific musical theories, but I try to avoid those conversations altogether. My recent relationships have mostly involved people who nag me and then act offended when I warn them I've had enough. Someone recently started a thread asking, "Would you be happier if you were more attractive?" Well, I have to admit, based on everything I've dealt with, I’d definitely be happier if I just met people who shared my musical taste.
Feeling the aging blues. in Psychology ·
Honestly, I don't care if that kid is hanging out in a suburban neighborhood, near Central Park, or just wandering through some part of NYC. Personally, I’d much rather spend my time out in nature. I have no interest in the city streets; besides, I'm usually just home lost in my own thoughts anyway. 😁 I have a private family plot out in a beautiful natural setting, and I was last there at the end of August. I spent some time picking plums and apples. I actually tried climbing one of the apple trees, but the branches felt so sketchy that I got spooked and climbed right back down. I feel this deep sense of nostalgia whenever I'm out in the wild. Usually, you might find me at Central Park, but honestly, being out in nature beats hanging out with the local kids any day. Nature is what really matters to me. Once I get some photos of my family plot in that gorgeous scenery, I'll show you all. It was absolute paradise there in late August. I have plenty of plum trees there—plums are easily the healthiest fruit. To be perfectly honest, when I'm out in the woods, I don't even feel the need to post on a forum. I've never once been out in nature and felt the urge to go online.
Health risks of secondhand smoke in Health ·
Look, I’m pretty blunt about this. Right out of the gate, I go on the offensive against anyone smoking near me just to startle them so they don't dare do it again. I’ve never actually worked in an environment where smoking was permitted, so I haven't dealt with those nightmare workplace scenarios. But when dealing with smokers, you have to be assertive—catch them off guard early on so they realize immediately that you aren't playing games. At the end of the day, it's a matter of health, so there's no reason to play nice. Just apply the pressure and they won't risk it.
