Honestly, it was a highly professional set—really solid, even great—but nothing more than that. They’re arguably a bit too old to be hitting much higher levels, yet they lacked just enough to reach that next tier. Specifically, they were missing Peter Hook. While Taj Chapman did a fine job locking everything in, that was about it. We really missed Hook's image, that classic "bad boy rocker" vibe that acts as the perfect counterweight to Sumner's image as the "polished nerd."

Regardless, New Order fans should be pretty happy with how things went.

The absolute peaks of the show: hearing Crystal during the opening (the way the "live" New Order band on stage synced up perfectly with the "fake" band from the official music video projected behind them) and, of course, True Faith in the second half. Still, it was during those exact moments that you felt Hook's absence the most.

That said, both New Order and JD fans might feel a little let down that the band didn't stop at just two JD tracks (Ceremony and LWTUA). Those two are always performed brilliantly, and they nailed them last night. On the flip side, their NO-obrad version of Isolation was totally overdone; the performance felt unnecessary.

I'm already looking forward to autumn and seeing Hook at the Fairgrounds. ☕

Gogol Bordello was incredible—just a wild, high-energy, totally unrestrained performance, which is exactly what you expect from a band in that genre. 🙂

It’s kind of funny—there were way more people talking about the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival before it even started than there are now.
I guess that just shows how much people are driven by the hype of the lineup.
Even though, looking at Franz Ferdinand tonight, it really seemed like the crowd was having a blast.
For me, though—the last two days have felt pretty mediocre, on average.
They really need to book some more interesting acts if they don't want this festival to just fizzle out.

I have no clue how those two bands could even be mentioned in the same breath. As for New Order, it was nice seeing them for the sake of general culture, even if they only dropped one killer album about 30 years ago. 😁

You're just so cool...

...you should've just admitted you actually listened to that one album exactly once in your entire life.

Nobody listens to NO for "general culture." You listen because their songs are absolute Peak. Every single album.

You probably consulted Dragaš for this "review" of yours.

So, here are my thoughts—everything was awesome. I caught Let 3, Gorillaz Soundsystem, and listened to a bit of General Elektriks, along with some New Order. I also checked out Mando Diao, and I was practically in the front row for Franz Ferdinand! Everything I heard was great, though I’d have to highlight Gorillaz Soundsystem; even though I'm not a massive fan and don't know all their tracks, the vibe was incredible—just a perfect way to chill out after the madness of Let 3. As for New Order, they were solid regardless of the fact that everyone there seemed like an old soul to me, and I'm definitely not an expert on their discography, but hey, I danced my heart out and had a blast. Let 3... well, what more can you say? They were amazing, as always. It was my first time hearing General Elektriks, and I have to say, they actually reminded me a tiny bit of Muse, whom I absolutely love. Mando Diao was fantastic—nothing but praise for them, those song arrangements were spot on. I loved it! Franz Ferdinand was brilliant, except for the fact that there were some pretty obnoxious people jumping around way too hard; some people actually wiped out (Seriously?! Falling down at a Franz Ferdinand show?! What is wrong with people?) so much so that some guy actually kicked his girlfriend in the kidney, and she had to go to the ER to get something for the pain. I'm really bummed I missed Gogol Bordello because I heard they were incredible, but unfortunately, I just couldn't make it 😢

Overall, the vibe was great. Of course, things could always be better, but I had a wonderful time and truly enjoyed every single concert I attended or listened to. 🙂

And once again, we missed out on Franz Ferdinand 😢 😢 😢 I can tell they were "bad" 🙂

It seems like there are a lot of tears flying because Plan B didn't show up 😁 😂

I bet you consulted with Dragaš for your little "review."

Taste is subjective, but personally, I think the direction their music took after Movement is total garbage. And ever since that thing they did for the Russian Republic, they lost all status as serious musicians. If I want mindless, unpretentious dance music, I'll go listen to the Pet Shop Boys.

Gorillaz sound system and General Elektriks were absolutely killer, and from what I can tell, nobody was actually missing Plan B. 😁
Gogol Bordello threw a legit party and I had a blast, even if I only knew exactly one song. New Order was phenomenal, and honestly, thank God they replaced The Cranberries, who didn't interest me in the slightest. I loved it—the setlist was top-tier, and alongside Franz, it was easily the best performance of the whole festival.
That Archie guy or whatever—I don't even remember what day it was because he was just so boring and underwhelming. Mando Diao put on a solid show, though I don't really listen to them and found them a bit much. The only thing more exhausting than the band was those screaming fangirls; they made me want to bail from the front row, but I had to hold my ground to save my spot for Franz. 🥳Franz Ferdinand was the absolute Peak of the festival—a perfect set, a perfect vibe. It’s a concert I’ve been waiting years for, and I have nothing but praise. I seriously can't wait to see them again. 🙂

Go ahead and trash the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival all you want, but if they didn't exist, I wouldn't have seen Kraftwerk, Moby, Franz Ferdinand, Alice in Chains, Morcheeba, New Order, or Gogol Bordello...
The real question is when these bands will actually decide to hit our neck of the woods on their own.

Kate Rodriguez3 said:That whole Archie Bronson Outfit thing—I honestly can't even remember what day it was because it was just too pretentious and kind of a letdown. Mando Diao put on a decent enough show, even if I don't really listen to them and found them a bit exhausting. Honestly, the most draining part of their set was dealing with those screaming fangirls in the front row; they actually made me want to back away from the barricade...

The Archie Bronson Outfit is just the wrong vibe for an outdoors festival, and vice versa. They’d be much better suited for a dark, sweaty club somewhere.

And Mando Diao (at least based on their live sound) feels a little too "pop-leaning" for a massive event like the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

Maybe they should have tried heading a few hundred miles south to the Split Festival instead? 🤣

I was browsing the English version of Wiki and looking at how many different genres they've slapped onto them under "genre":

Alternative rock
Garage rock revival
Blues rock
Indie rock
Country

🤦

If that's the case, then what does that make Alen Nižetić? A Death-metalhead? 😂

After them, Franz Ferdinand was just a standard "wild party." Those guys have so much live charisma that they can play through a huge chunk of unreleased, unknown material without breaking a sweat, and they still absolutely kill it. 🙏

I finally made it out to catch the full lineup of Gogol Bordello, New Order, Mando Diao, and Franz Ferdinand.

Honestly, all four sets were solid, but Franz Ferdinand was absolutely killer. I haven't really been actively spinning Gogol lately, but apparently, I didn't need to—they were perfect for just losing yourself in the dance and jumping around. Huge props to them for playing a straight hour without even a single break(!)... Now, I originally bought my ticket specifically for New Order, and they delivered exactly what I wanted: an experience I’ll be thinking about for a long time. Given their age (especially Barney and Stephen) and the fact that they haven't dropped an album in seven years, you really couldn't ask for more. The encore with 'Temptation' was great, though I have no clue why Barney insists on telling us it's a "very good song" before every single time he plays it; obviously, it's his absolute favorite.

Expectations were pretty high for Mando Diao, but the performance felt a bit lukewarm, even if they kicked things off strong with 'God Knows' and the encore was decent enough. If anything, the girls definitely made up for any lackluster moments in the set—not necessarily because of the music, but because of Gustaf and Bjorn showing off their bare chests... On the other hand, Franz Ferdinand showed everyone how you actually play a show and work a crowd. It was my first time seeing them live, and I was floored, as did most of the crowd. There wasn't a single dull moment from start to finish; '40', 'Outsiders', and 'This Fire' were nothing short of genius.

If I had one gripe, it was that some of the acts tried way too hard to engage the crowd, especially the Swedes. Still, I'm definitely walking away remembering Hutz's bare ass, Barney's wild hair, and Kapranos's little Hitler-style mustache.🙂

Pretty bad, honestly. You’ve got New Order sounding like they're on their deathbed, barely even singing. Then there's Franz Ferdinand, who just seem to be churning out the exact same album over and over again—is this the second or third time? I skipped Mando Diao entirely because I just couldn't be bothered. As for Gogol Bordello, I was done after two songs. And Gorillaz Soundsystem? 😂

It's a damn virtual band. It's such a pathetic situation that they can't even bring out a real band that actually exists, so instead, they bring someone who does a tribute to a virtual act? General Elektriks is just terrible.

But hey, it keeps the masses happy, so whatever. 😍

If it were up to me, I'd book some newer names that aren't so overpriced (and just because they're newer doesn't mean they have to be hipster garbage ; ))

But seriously, booking Franz Ferdinand for the third time? Lol.

I don't even know—honestly, I went mainly because I was obsessed with The Killers, and Franz Ferdinand was a huge draw for me too... everything else at the festival felt kind of like an afterthought, though Gorillaz were actually pretty solid. It’s such a bummer I had to head straight back home right after because I had other stuff I had to take care of
And yeah, I see everyone fighting so hard over what genre The Killers actually fit into. Personally? I'd just toss them under indie rock, which is exactly what they are... I mean, you don't have to be some total underground mystery to be considered indie, right?

Does anyone know where I can find (or maybe even buy) some footage from this year's Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival?

Some people swear it’s our absolute biggest festival, while others—well, let's just say they can't stand it—but honestly, the truth is they always manage to pull in at least a few huge acts every single year...

So, what are you guys thinking for next year's lineup? Any wild guesses?

huh

Can we actually expect any big names after this year?
Sony Music is doing fine—they might even snag a few headliners like they did this year
Lollapalooza also fell short this season, so I guess they’re planning to trim the schedule by a day or two next year—not exactly a great sign
The only one that could potentially be the biggest in the country is the Newport Jazz Festival
So, it feels like bands like Mando Diao and Franz Ferdinand are really the only viable options for Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival at this point
Though, man, I’d love to see: Editorse, Blur, The Prodigy, Korn, etc.

Man, we could really use The Killers. They’re already hitting up Lollapalooza the weekend right before Coachella, so they might as well extend the trip out to Washington, D.C. They haven't played a show here yet, and honestly, judging by everyone's wish lists, people are dying to see them.

I honestly don't think this wishlist actually matters for the lineup, which is honestly such a bummer...

Here’s what I think actually stands a chance:
- 30 Seconds to Mars (if they can pull off a smaller Burning Man style vibe, they could totally headline Coachella), and honestly, they'd boost attendance by at least 50%—assuming those teenagers are even allowed in without their parents, I have no clue what the Coachella age rules are like anyway 🙂 ) + they're out there announcing dates for the new album too
- The Killers, they're super relevant right now because of the new record, though they really could've played this year
- Kings of Leon, just the kind of band you'd expect to see at Coachella
- Editors, got a new album coming, fingers crossed they knock it out of the park again 🙂
- Florence + the Machine
- Hurts, they're already dropping tour dates, but man, I really hope they bring someone bigger next time... seeing this band for a second time felt a bit like watching a rerun of a summer series, but a third time would just be overkill
- Placebo, if the organizers have any sense at all, they'll book them, especially with the new album on the way 🙂

Anyway, we'll see if we're right!
