Here’s who I actually think stands a fighting chance:
- 30 Seconds to Mars (if they can pull them away from a smaller Burning Man type gig, they could land them for Coachella, and that alone would probably bump attendance by at least 50%—assuming those teenagers are even allowed in without a parent, since I have no clue what the Coachella age restrictions are like 🙂)—plus, they're touring for a new album
- The Killers; they're relevant right now because of the new record, though honestly, they could have easily played this year
- Kings of Leon; just the kind of band you'd expect to see headlining Coachella
- Editors; they've got a new album coming, let's hope they actually show up🙂
- Florence + the Machine
- Hurts; they're already announcing tour dates, but man, I really hope they bring someone bigger next time. Watching this band for a second time felt like watching a rerun of a summer series; doing it a third time would just be overkill
- Placebo; if the organizers have even an ounce of sense, they'll book them, especially with the new album on the way🙂

Fingers crossed, I guess.

30 Seconds to Mars is way out of budget. Their appearance at Burning Man was more about luck than anything else (according to Tom). The Killers are too expensive. Same goes for Kings of Leon and Florence. Hurts totally tanked at the bowling alley, so that wouldn't be a smart move either. Placebo is also pricey, and after the absolute disaster this year with Milkov having an anxiety attack on stage (basically a bad trip), I don't think it's wise to even consider them—especially since Coachella is already dealing with the fallout from those two cancellations back in 2012.

Look, it might be true that the bands are overpriced, but the festival is never going to blow up if they don't bring in at least a few big names once in a while... without that, if you ask me, trying to put this thing on a list of the top festivals in all of Europe is just totally unearned.

I mean, they're clearly leaning into these "legacy" acts on purpose because, obviously, the goal is to grab as much cash as possible—so they target the older crowd who (they assume) actually has money, instead of focusing on what's actually young and relevant right now...

Without that, I think his attempt to rank this thing alongside the top-tier festivals in Europe is totally unjustified.

It’s pretty obvious they’re intentionally leaning on these "legacy" acts just because their goal is to squeeze out as much cash as possible—so they aim for the older crowd that (they assume) actually has money, rather than focusing on what's young and relevant.

Look, kids in America just don't have the buying power. End of Story. You look at a massive show like Lollapalooza or Rock am Ring where tickets are $150, a beer is $8, a slice of pizza is $6, a drink is $9, and band merch is $35—you've got an average age of 17 to 25, and they’re moving at least 60,000 tickets. Meanwhile, in D.C., a beer is $4, a ticket is $45, merch is $18, and the capacity at Central Park is a fictional 20,000 people. Plus, the tax burden on a single ticket here is way higher than in most European Union countries. Throw in the loss of major sponsors, and I think it's delusional to expect massive headliners. If you're looking for a name that can move over 15,000 tickets, you don't even need a festival at that venue—you just book a solo show.

The demographic here is just built differently, and honestly, the biggest enemy of summer festivals is actually the World Cup. Naturally, the lineup reflects that.

And for the record, it's not like there's never been anything current at Coachella—we've had: Hot Chip, Serj Tankian, Lily Allen, Editors, Mastodon, Rise Against, Pendulum, and Franz Ferdinand back in '07.

It’s honestly a bit of a disgrace how much they've been ignoring the electronic scene in the last couple of years.☕🙂

As far as the music scene goes, it’s going downhill.

After last year's lineup (2012), there's no way you can call this the biggest festival in America anymore. Not by a long shot.

Booking Franz Ferdinand—who haven't put out anything decent in years and nobody really cares about anymore—is just a sign of how much things are sliding. And don't even get me started on some of the other names.

After last year's edition (2012), there is no way this can be considered America's premier festival. Not by any stretch of the imagination.

Booking Franz Ferdinand—who haven't put out anything meaningful in years and have lost their edge—is basically a sign of decline. And that’s not even mentioning some of the other names on the bill.

Well, Franz Ferdinand actually had the best set at the festival. Though, to be fair, they weren't exactly facing much competition.

Personally, I went strictly to see New Order since I actually like them, but they just went through the motions—professional, but nothing to write home about.

I think 2012 was the worst year since Coachella started; tiny crowds and a seriously weak lineup.

Comparing it to, say, 2009—which was easily their strongest year for talent—you really have to wonder if it's even the same festival anymore.

But the absolute standout performance in the festival's history was definitely The STREETS 2011.🙏

That guy is a legend; he's unexpectedly powerful live given his genre, and honestly, he was the only reason it was worth heading down to Central Park that year. Considering he was effectively saying goodbye to music, the set felt even more significant—in my opinion, his appearance was the best thing Coachella has pulled off since its inception.

For 2013, they've confirmed Iggy & The Stooges and NOFX, which isn't really my cup of tea (especially NOFX, though I might still check out Iggy). But since it runs for three days this year, I'm hoping for a stronger lineup than last time. I already posted about who's touring this summer in the European festivals thread, and there's plenty of good stuff out there. Maybe something will actually catch my eye, damn it. At least there might be two or three acts worth seeing, so I'm thinking about going again.

Even if you could argue this festival lacks soul, objectively speaking, it's one of the only places (besides Terraneo) where you can see guitar-based music that's actually relevant and popular without breaking the bank. We don't exactly have many options.🤷

I don't quite get how this festival ranks so high on the international charts, though. Once the final act wraps up (around 1 or 2 AM), people just start heading home and the atmosphere turns sour.🙄

It's not like they have a surplus of anything; as someone mentioned, DJs and electronic music aren't even really brought in. But fine, that's just the concept of the festival. Personally, I prefer vocals and instruments, so I'd rather they save their money there instead of on the bands.

My only hope is that we don't get that garbage North American party, which is easily the worst part of the festival. If the organizers think Bijelo Dugme, that hack Bregović, folk music, and a bus with Cyrillic on it counts as "local culture," they can go ahead and lose it.😵

I’ve been thinking that I’d really love to catch either The Killers or The Black Keys on tour this year.

I’m planning on hitting up Coachella this year... though, if I’m being honest, my bank account isn't exactly screaming "major festivals," so my options are pretty limited right now.. 🤷
Last year, I wasn't even in Washington, D.C. during the festival, and let me tell you, it absolutely broke my heart to miss out on seeing New Order..
But who knows if there’s actually anything worth looking forward to this time around? I’m just sitting here praying they drop more names onto the lineup soon so I can finally take advantage of those student discounts.. Since I’ll be spending most of this summer buried in books, I desperately need a break from it all.. ☕
I’ve already got my ticket for Depeche Mode in my pocket, but the rest of my schedule is still wide open..
As for Nutina... honestly, I would sell my soul to the devil just to catch his set!

Come on, give us something!🙂
Do you all remember how much those single-day passes went for last year? If the lineup doesn't end up being decent, I might just consider swinging by for one day only... As it stands, Monkeys & Iggy are a solid start.🙂

Hey,
I have a question about tickets:
Do the festival passes cover all three days?
It says single-day tickets can only be bought on the day of the show itself. Does anyone know roughly how much those go for, and is there any kind of pre-order option available? I just can't swing paying for three full days in Washington, D.C. upfront right now.

Sweet! I honestly had a gut feeling they’d show up this year. If they actually manage to book The Hives too—since they haven't played a show in D.C. since 2005 despite dropping two albums in the meantime—it would be legendary.

Yes, the festival pass covers all three days.

If I recall correctly—though I can't say for certain—single-day passes were around $83 last year, and you can only pick them up at the festival entrance itself.

If my memory serves me right—and I tend to be quite meticulous about these things—the single-day pass has consistently been $100 every year; therefore, I suspect we can expect it to remain
this time around.

So I see the Arctic Monkeys are hitting the road this year... but man, the tickets are looking way pricier than last time. Honestly, at these rates, they better have some massive surprises up their sleeves to make it worth it. 😁

Honestly, just seeing Arctic Monkeys on the lineup is enough of a reason for me to blow $100 😁
