When I try to place, say, $100 on a back bet, everything seems straightforward according to the odds, but when I attempt to put those same $100 on a lay bet, the numbers look completely bizarre. Maybe someone could provide an over/under example using today's LA Galaxy vs LAFC game.
Back bets function just like they would at any other sportsbook, I assume, so it should be fairly intuitive.
For instance: Strasbourg vs St. Louis City SC, Back Strasbourg at 1.75, x at 3.85, St. Louis City SC at 5.8.
If you wager $10 on Strasbourg and they win at those odds, you get $17.50; however, if there's a draw or St. Louis City SC wins, you lose your money.
With a Lay bet, you aren't betting against a bookie—you effectively become the house.
For instance: Strasbourg vs St. Louis City SC, Lay Strasbourg at 1.76, x at 3.9, St. Louis City SC at 5.9.
If you lay Strasbourg for $10 and they end up winning, you lose, because you're acting as the bookmaker. You don't just lose the $10 stake; rather, you lose whatever the winner would have gained on a $10 bet at 1.76 odds, which in this case means losing $7.60.
If it ends in a draw or St. Louis City SC wins, you collect the $10 placed by the person betting against you.
The easiest way to grasp the mechanics, I think, is to simply click the odds and enter your stake; once you see the offer details, it becomes clearer who needs to win for you to collect.
