So, here's the deal.

I'm using Word. I just finished my thesis and now I need to add citations to a few different pages. Basically, I need to put the source info in the footnotes at the bottom of the specific pages where I'm quoting things.

But I've hit a wall. Every time I try to add a footnote to one page, that same exact text shows up at the bottom of every single page in the entire document. It's everywhere. And I can't get rid of it—if I try to delete it, it wipes out everything. 😢

I could figure this out back when I was using an older version of Word, but now? Nothing is working. 😢

Can some expert please help me out? 🙂

If you need a footnote or something... Footnotes just look it up on Google

Just download Adobe Acrobat here and get it installed.
If you already have it on your PC, there's a good chance your file associations have gotten messy, causing your system to default to opening PDF documents in Word. You'll need to go in and fix those settings.

but how exactly??🤷

I had absolutely no clue that was even an option 😂

I was out here struggling to type stuff into the footer, and then I realize how easy this actually is... 😁

Thanks a million, you're the best!!! 😉

Right-click on any PDF file -> properties, then where you see open with click "change" and set it to Adobe Acrobat Reader

Or if you're using Windows 7:

Go to Control Panel -> Programs -> under Default Programs, select "Make a file type always open in a specific program," find the .pdf extension, and pick Adobe Reader

Hey there! Quick question—how do I open those Office files created on a Mac, you know, like .docx and .pptx, over on my PC?

First off, what version of Office are you actually running on your PC? Honestly, it doesn't seem to me like this is some sort of weird Mac-to-PC compatibility issue—that’s unlikely—but rather just an issue with you having an outdated version on your computer.

If you happen to be stuck using Office 2003, you should probably just download and install this.

If you're still rocking Office 2003, you should definitely grab and install this.

Thanks, it works!

Why does Microsoft Word act up and change my spelling—like, if I type "middle" and hit space, it suddenly switches it to "submiddle"—whenever I press the spacebar?
It keeps doing the same thing with other words too.

And things like that.

Just turn off AutoCorrect—specifically, disable "Autoformat as you Type".

I'm running into an issue with Excel 2010. I am trying to build a chart based on this data:

a. Daily 1
b. Three times a week 0
c. Twice a week 7
d. Once a week 29
e. Something else 3

How can I get the chart to automatically display percentages for each category instead of these raw numbers?

Yeah, I just realized that while there's an option to display percentages on pie charts, it’s nowhere to be found for bar charts, which is exactly what I need right now. I guess I'll have to find some workaround myself. 🙂

One more question...

Is there an American spelling checker available for Microsoft Word 2010?😕

Kyle Johnson2 said:I’m posting this for the sake of everyone else reading this thread—you explained things pretty well just now, so I don't see what's wrong with the formula @LordByron provided
=SUMPRODUCT((A2:A100)*(0+MOD(ROW(A2:A100)-1;7)=0))
Obviously, if you start from A3, you’ll need to adjust it to -2 in the formula

That version you shared here
=SUMPRODUCT(--(MOD(ROW(A3:A465)-ROW(A3);7)=0);A3:A465)
doesn't quite hit the mark in this specific case (at least based on my understanding of what you're trying to achieve)—so, for the benefit of anyone else lurking who might run into a similar headache, could you walk us through your logic? Maybe include a screenshot if it makes it easier

Sorry for the radio silence earlier—just been buried under a mountain of stuff lately.

To test this out, I copied a bunch of identical numbers into different columns and trimmed down the dataset a bit. My actual sheet has over 700 rows, though

Column 1: Summed up using the "old school" manual way—3+10+17+24+31, etc.
Column 2: Summed using "my" formula, which yields the same result: =SUMPRODUCT((D3: D66)*(0+MOD(ROW(D3: D66)-3;7)=0))
Column 3: Summed using LordByron's formula: =SUMPRODUCT((E3: E66)*(0+MOD(ROW(E3: E66)-4;7)=0))

But seriously—why the heck is there a -4 in there? 😕

And for the record, that isn't even "my" formula. 🙂

Hey there,

I’d really appreciate some help with a bit of a headache I'm dealing with. I've got this Excel spreadsheet where one specific column is acting up; instead of standard text or numbers, it's filled with these little icons—basically just two different arrows, one pointing left and one pointing right. I'm trying to use 'find and replace' to swap out the left arrow for an 'L' and the right one for a 'D', but it's not cooperating.
Basically, is there some kind of tool or software where I could just dump this column, have the program actually recognize those arrows as distinct characters, and then spit them back out as text so I can actually work with them?

Thanks in advance.

Nicholas King said:If you're looking to pull data from a specific range—let’s say, for instance, A2 : A100—here is how that formula actually looks:

If you’re looking to run a calculation like `=SUMPRODUCT((A2:A100)*(0+MOD(ROW(A2:A100)...`, you're essentially diving into the deep end of Excel gymnastics. It’s one of those formulas that looks like a cat walked across your keyboard, but there's actually a method to the madness—usually involving some kind of alternating pattern or row-based logic. I see people trying to pull off these "clever" little tricks all the time, thinking they've cracked a secret code, when really they're just making their spreadsheets a nightmare to audit six months later. Using `MOD` and `ROW` inside a `SUMPRODUCT` is basically the spreadsheet equivalent of building a house out of toothpicks—it might look cool while you're doing it, but don't be surprised when the whole thing collapses the moment someone else tries to touch it. If you're trying to sum every other row or apply a specific weight based on where the data sits, this works—but let's be honest, most of the time there's a much cleaner way to handle this without turning your workbook into a cryptic puzzle. Just a thought.-1;7)=0))

Look, this bolded unit is actually pretty critical—you’ve got to adjust it based on which row your data actually starts on. Basically, you're just taking the starting row number and subtracting one (for example... If your data starts sitting pretty on row ten, just go ahead and shift everything up by nine—set that offset to -9 and call it a day.).

Can't see the forest for the trees. 🙈
Justin Torres77 said:So, if you take column 3 and run it through that formula Nicholas King was using—you know, the one where he’s basically playing wizard with the cells—it looks like this: =SUMPRODUCT((E3:E66)*(0+MOD(ROW(E3:E66)...-4;7)=0))

And why, exactly—why -4????😕

Look, I didn't exactly invent this formula—it's not like I'm some kind of mathematical genius or anything. 🙂

Your "formula"—man, you’re just a total joke. 😁

Hey, I’ve run into a bit of a snag here and was hoping someone could point me in the right direction (Excel)!!!! The TRUNC function basically just "chops off" decimals at a certain point. It works fine if I want to take a number with, say, 10 decimal places and force it down to 6, but what happens when I actually need some logic applied? If I want that sixth decimal place to round up or down instead of just being sliced away, how do I make that happen? Thanks!

P.S. To make my question a little clearer, here is a quick numerical example:
0.123456789 => using the TRUNC command to keep five decimal places => 0.12345. But now, I want that last digit to be a 6 instead of a 5, because logically, shouldn't it be rounding up to the nearest value? 🙂)

Like, if I have a number with 10 decimal places, I can tell it to just leave me with 6, which works fine. But—and here is the kicker—if I want that sixth decimal place to actually round up or down to the nearest value instead of just being cut off, how on earth do I do that???? Thanks!

P.S. Just to make this less of a headache, let me give you a quick example:
0.123456789 => using TRUNC to keep five decimal places => 0.12345, but I actually want that last digit to be a 6 because it really ought to be rounded up 🙂)

Look, if your starting value is sitting in cell B166, try playing around with this formula:

=IF(MOD(B166*100,100)=75,TRUNC(B166)+0.5,ROUNDUP(B166/0.5,5)*0.5)
