Write a VBA program for Microsoft Word that prints a sequential number and your full name over 20 lines.

Do the exact same thing using VBA in Microsoft Excel, but set it up so column A holds the sequence number, column B holds your last name, and column C holds your first name.

Post your attempt at a solution—that way people can actually see what's going wrong.

I managed to get one working for Excel, but I've hit a wall with Word and don't quite know how to proceed:
Sub zadaca()
range("A1").Select
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "1."
range("B1").Select
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "kata"
range("C1").Select
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "Catherine"
range("A1").Select
Selection.AutoFill Destination:=range("A1:A20"), Type:=xlFillDefault
range("A1:A20").Select
range("B1").Select
Selection.AutoFill Destination:=range("B1🙂20"), Type:=xlFillDefault
range("B1🙂20").Select
range("C1").Select
Selection.AutoFill Destination:=range("C1:C20"), Type:=xlFillDefault
range("C1:C20").Select
range("B1").Select
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "Kata"
range("B1").Select
Selection.AutoFill Destination:=range("B1🙂20"), Type:=xlFillDefault
range("B1🙂20").Select
range("A2").Select
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "2"
range("A3").Select
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "3"
range("A4").Select
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "4."
range("A2").Select
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "2."
range("A3").Select
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "3."
range("A5").Select
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "5"
range("A5").Select
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "5."
range("A6").Select
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "6."
range("A7").Select
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "7."
range("A8").Select
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "8."
range("A9").Select
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "9."
range("A10").Select
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "10"
range("A10").Select
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "10."
range("A11").Select
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "11."
range("A12").Select
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "12."
range("A13").Select
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "13."
range("A14").Select
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "14."
range("A15").Select
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "15."
range("A16").Select
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "16."
range("A17").Select
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "17."
range("A18").Select
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "18."
range("A19").Select
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "19."
range("A20").Select
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "20."
range("C20").Select
select end Sub
this is for Excel

Now, for Word—I turn on the macro recorder, enable numbering, and then start typing from 1 to 20, Kata, Catherine, line by line, and once I hit stop...
it works, but I can't actually see any code.😢

Just press alt + F8, pick the Macro you want, and hit Edit.

Instead of that massive block of code you wrote, why not try this for autofilling serial numbers (A1:A20)?

Sub rednibroj()
range("A1") = "1"
select range("A2")
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "=IF(R[-1]C="""","""",R[-1]C+1)"
select range("A2")
select Selection AutoFill Destination := range("A2:A20") Type := xlFillDefault range
select range("A2:A20")
select end Sub

To trigger it, just use a command button and assign this code to it.

hey there

So, look, I basically never touch Microsoft Word—honestly, I don't even use anything like it—but I've got a question. How do I actually make sure the text I'm typing stays in standard Letter size?

I'm trying to put together a job application, right? In Microsoft Word, it looked like a single page, but when I hit print, the thing came out as three separate pieces... like, three pages long. Total mess.

How do I set it up so that if it looks like one page on my screen, it actually prints out as just one single sheet of paper?

And honestly, what font size am I supposed to be using for this stuff? I have zero clue about any of these settings.

thanks

Ever wonder if you can make Microsoft Word look more like actual paper while you're typing?

VIEW > PRINT LAYOUT should do the trick.

As for printing, isn't it usually set to standard Letter size by default anyway?

rustywalker1 said:Do you want Microsoft Word to actually look like you're typing on standard US Letter paper while you work?

If that's the issue, just hit VIEW > PRINT LAYOUT and you're done. Simple enough.

And when you go to print, I'm pretty sure it defaults to US Letter anyway.

Yeah, that's exactly what I meant—I want it to look like I'm working on a US Letter page.

The problem is, even though it's set to print on US Letter, whenever I try to print just one single page from Microsoft Word, it somehow splits itself across three different US Letter sheets and tries to print all three of them to the end. What's up with that?

Have you given this a shot yet? Is this what you were looking for?
VIEW > PRINT LAYOUT

If you have enough text to fill three pages, it’s going to take up three pages. You can't force everything onto one.😉

if you've got enough text for three pages, then that's how many pages you're gonna get. you can't just cram everything onto one😉

look, i get what you're saying, but Microsoft Word is showing me it's just one page, then when i go to print, suddenly it's 3 pages because the font looks huge

i already tried, i don't have print layout active right now, let me grab a screenshot for you

Let's clear one thing up first. Word and WordPad are both text programs, but they aren't the same thing.
What you posted there was written in WordPad. Look, if you have Word, just use it—you'll have way more control over things.

I tried tweaking a section of this example
Specifically, copying data from one cell into a new row
but I couldn't quite get it to work...
Is it possible to set it up so that when you click "ENTER 2," Company B—along with its specific data—shows up on the log list?
Also... could we have a dedicated cell that tracks the count of how many times "ENTER 1" and "ENTER 2" have been clicked?

The stuff you posted looks like it was typed up in WordPad. Look, if you actually have Word on your machine, just use that. You'll have way more control over what you're doing.

the basic Word that comes pre-installed with Windows 7... I really don't feel like installing the full Office suite just for this. I never use it anyway, and honestly, it just feels like bloatware taking up space on my PC.

I managed to make do with this version, though. It’s not quite what I had in mind, but I guess I can still get some help out of it. 👍

can I set it up so when I click INPUT 2.. Company B pops up on the log list along with its info..

Don't see where you touched the Macro code, besides just adding another receipt.

Seems like you want to set up multiple receipts with fixed data so you don't have to type everything out—just swap the amounts. Honestly? I wouldn't do it that way. If you've got companies A, B, C, D... just dump them all onto a separate sheet, maybe call it "CLIENTS"
then use the VLOOKUP function on one receipt to pull whatever info you need for a specific company. You just type the company name and the rest of the static info fills itself in. Once the receipt is done, hit the button and the data copies over to the "log" sheet. That way, your "log" sheet stays in order of whenever the receipts were issued, regardless of which company it was for.

If you're dead set on using two different receipts, just copy the Macro into a second Module2 and just swap out the source and destination cell addresses. Name the Macro Download2 and then link it to button2 (Assign Macro)

For tracking clicks visually, just Google it or simply grab the link from the last receipt number you copied.

Actually, that’s just WordPad. It’s nothing special. Your best bet is to send some text to someone who has Word, let them format it, and then print it out. 🤷
Word is definitely the better tool for those tasks. If you plan on doing this kind of work more often, you might want to just install it properly.

Microsoft Word is hands down the best tool for this kind of stuff. If you're planning on writing things like this in the future, you might as well just install it.

I don't know... I just can't be bothered to install it just for that.😁

I was tinkering with a Macro... but I uploaded a fresh file to the web instead..

The VLOOKUP function works fine... but... I don't deal with static data... so I'm not sure if that would be an organized approach..

I did exactly what you suggested... thanks... it's working now..
For the workflow I have in mind, I'm going to need quite a few modules..
Are there any limitations?

And honestly... I'm not interested in the invoices... just the logic... the code..
How to move specific cells from one sheet to a new sheet..
I noticed that might be a perfect example for what I'm trying to do..

Among other things... I want to build a little "mini-program"..
Something to help me with... generating quotes... for work
Lately, putting together a quote takes me way too long... since I'm doing all the math manually..
I haven't used Excel much... so I'm still finding my footing..
But... you helped me out so quickly with those "checkboxes"... so my ambitions have grown a bit..😉
If I were to add a worksheet containing all the selected items and their components...
That sheet would be for printing... like a pick list of selected materials...
That’s why I was looking into copying data into a new row..
It needs to be clear and quantitatively accurate... a "visual check" after clicking the SUBMIT button..

Anyway... here is the general logic..
1. A rough breakdown of elements... spread across several worksheets..
2. On each individual worksheet... create a separate table for each element... listing all its constituent parts..
3. Use "checkboxes" to select parts as needed..
4. Process the data in the tables as required... allowing for adjustments to quantities and measurements..
5. a) The resulting data gets copied to other tables that calculate price, quantity, etc..
5. b) The data also gets copied to a designated print sheet... the material list...

Some advice would be welcome..
And... is it possible to trigger the input... instead of using a SUBMIT button... maybe by typing a specific character into a cell?
Similar to how you handled the "checkbox"

One word: Access. Or, if you want to get fancy: linking Access to Excel.

What you’re describing—if I’m reading this correctly—is essentially just a small-scale database used for generating reports.

just like how you handled that "checkbox" thing

Like Nicholas King said, you're biting off way more than you can chew here. You're basically trying to build a full-blown reporting database. Look, you *can* do it in Excel, but it's gonna be a massive headache and requires some serious skill. Trying to figure this out one question at a time on forums is gonna take forever. Just check out THIS tutorial on macro commands. It took me over a month to wrap my head around that one (with some help and plenty of Googling). It’s pretty similar to what you’re aiming for.
It covers everything from copying data to another spreadsheet with memory, client databases, printing, etc., etc...

btw: if you're sticking with this, stick to the checkboxes. Use simple functions and formulas. Most importantly? Organize your data properly, because without that, you're just asking for trouble.

Check out my stuff—I've got all the functions and plenty of examples, including VBA. Study it before you dive into anything serious so you don't end up "wasting your damn time." Honestly, it might actually be smarter to just have someone code this for you in Access or a real programming language rather than spinning your wheels. peace
