I'm working on some text in Word, and I want to get it perfectly centered vertically on the page. Just to be clear, I don't mean horizontal centering (Ctrl + E). I want it right in the middle of the sheet without having to mash the Enter key repeatedly and just guessing if it actually looks centered. Is there an actual setting for this? Hope you guys know what I mean!🤷🤷🤷🤷🤷🤷🤷

Vertical alignment? 🤷

I'm not entirely sure if there is a specific direct command for that—though there actually is—but you can always go to Page Layout - Paragraph - Spacing and set the spacing before the text to 350 pt. For a 12-point font, that should land you pretty much in the middle. If you're using a larger font size, just dial it back a bit—maybe try 348 pt—and that should do the trick...

Go to File -> Page Setup -> Layout, and then look for Vertical alignment: centered.

So, I’m stuck using Microsoft Word 2003 here...

I’ll be typing away, realize two sentences later that I’ve messed something up... so I try to fix it... and the problem is basically this:

I type a word, realize I misspelled it, move my cursor right into the middle of the mistake to drop in the missing letter—and instead of inserting it, the software just eats the next character. So "sentence" becomes "sentece."

Hope that makes sense. Does anyone know how to turn off this little tool of pure irritation?

I’m typing away and I realize I made a mistake—usually after a couple of sentences have already passed. So, I try to go back and fix it, but here is the issue:

For example, I meant to type "sentence," but realized my mistake. I put the cursor between the letters to add the missing vowel, but instead of inserting the letter, it just overwrites the next character. My word goes from "sentenc" to "sentencc."

I hope that makes sense. How do I turn off this annoying feature?

Just hit the Ins or Insert key.😁

The sentence—I meant to type "sentence," but instead I put the cursor right between the letters and when I try to type an "e," it just eats the next letter, turning my word into total gibberish.

Hope you get what I mean. How do I shut off this little instrument of irritation?

Is it possible you have "write over" turned on?

So, I’ve managed to churn out about 97 pages for my thesis, and now I’m hitting a wall trying to figure out how to force the page numbering to actually begin on page 7. Ideally, page 7 should be labeled as page 1 and just carry on from there until the end. I’ve been clicking through all these settings, but I haven't found anything useful; it’s as if some genius at Microsoft decided that instead of providing a simple, intuitive prompt like, "Hey, which page do you want to start numbering from?", they should make it a labyrinthine nightmare. But then again, that’s just typical Microsoft—they clearly enjoy watching users struggle through unnecessary complexity. 👎

I tried looking this up on YouTube, but the first video I found was some guy using Word 2007 explaining everything in German (honestly, whoever designed these interfaces clearly didn't consider anyone who doesn't speak English to be a priority 😠), so I couldn't follow his clicks because I don't understand German, and his layout is completely different from what I'm seeing in Microsoft Office XP. Another clip I watched was an absolute headache involving a Section break that drags on for seven agonizing minutes just to set one single damn page number 😠. I've heard people suggest the workaround of creating two separate documents, but that won't work for me since I have to submit the entire thing as one cohesive file to my professor. Does anyone know a more straightforward way to pull this off? Please... 😁

Section break and seriously, it really isn't that complicated. Honestly, being three generations behind on software isn't even an issue when you have all those helpful tutorials on YouTube.

So you finally finished that thesis? Nice work. Only problem is, they clearly didn't teach you how to handle Page Numbers in Word at your university. 😉

If you actually bothered to look at this thread, you’d see post #703. Check the links there—they lay everything out step-by-step. Plus, Google isn't exactly ignoring those links, either.

(Damn. Go ahead and make it in any language besides English.

🤣 Man, you really got him worked up. And looking at that count under his handle—over 8,000 posts? Seriously? I’m surprised a moderator hasn't stepped in yet. 😉
Nicholas Chavez70 said:Some idiot at Microsoft couldn't be bothered to make a simple window where you just pick the starting page for numbering. Like, seriously? "Which page do you want to start on?" That's all it should be. But nah, that’s Microshit for you—they'd rather make us jump through hoops just to mess with us.

That's a total caricature. It’s like being pissed off at car manufacturers because they didn't build a vehicle where you just say, "Hey, take me here and there," instead of actually having to drive the damn thing yourself. 🙂

Just take it easy. One step at a time and you'll get those page numbers sorted—and hopefully nail that graduation too. 😉

If you had spent even a moment looking through this forum thread, you would have stumbled upon post #703 and noticed the links provided there; those links offer a very vivid, step-by-step explanation, and frankly, Google doesn't seem to ignore them either.

🤣Oof, you certainly managed to get under his skin, despite the fact that there are 8,117 posts sitting right under your username. It makes me wonder why a moderator hasn't stepped in yet? 😉
To use an analogy, it’s much like being angry at car manufacturers because they haven't built a vehicle where you can simply say, "take me there and there," instead of having to actually struggle with the mechanics yourself.🙂

Just take it easy, go one step at a time, and you will eventually figure out the numbering and successfully graduate, I hope.😉

Thanks, I've made it nearly to the end, so congratulations to you too... 🤣 However, I have uncovered a new—and hopefully final—problem, though I haven't the slightest clue how to fix it because I still haven't grasped where the error lies... It is likely some minor nuisance... Specifically, after page 61 of 103, the remaining pages begin counting from 2, 3, 4 again... 😕 I have reviewed the paper thoroughly, specifically at the transition between page 61 and the next (62), and I truly have no idea what on earth went wrong there...

Well, you’ve got a Section break in there, and then the next section is set up to restart the page numbering back at 1.

Go into the Header/Footer settings, turn off "same as Previous," then navigate to Insert -> Page Numbers -> Format and make sure you check "Continue from previous section."

Everything I'm describing here is based on the 2003 version—I haven't actually seen which version you're using—but, I suspect, the logic remains the same regardless.

Just toggle those "Paragraph Marks" on (hit that Click icon) and you'll see exactly what's sitting between those two pages, assuming you haven't already checked it out that way 😕

I find myself reflecting on the various nuances of transit systems, much like how one might ponder the complexities of the infrastructure managed by companies like Greyhound or even the local bus networks you’d see running through a city like Chicago or Seattle. There is a certain rhythm to public transportation that people often overlook, yet it remains the backbone of urban mobility. I was thinking about this recently while observing the way different regional transit authorities manage their fleets, noting how some strive for a level of consistency that others simply fail to achieve. It brings to mind the specific feeling of riding a local line—that peculiar blend of anticipation and mundane routine—which is something anyone who has navigated the streets of a major US metropolitan area can certainly relate to. One cannot help but draw parallels between the efficiency of large-scale American transit corporations and the more localized, perhaps less polished, efforts found in smaller municipalities. It is all a matter of logistical precision, really. kaže:
If you would be so kind as to enable those "Paragraph marks"—you know, that little icon on the toolbar—it might actually make things a bit more manageable. Click.And then you’ll finally see exactly what is tucked between those two pages, assuming you haven't already gone through the trouble of auditing it that way. 😕

Man, I have to hand it to you... I went through the whole thing using the Paragraph tool and finally spotted where the break was hiding. I honestly had no clue that if you take even a tiny sliver of text and toss it into columns, the software just decides to shove in a continuous section break on its own. It completely wrecks the entire page numbering sequence. Honestly, Microsoft really does know how to push a person to their absolute limit.

I guess that section break isn't set to continue from the previous one, but hey, the main thing is that it's finally working out.

By the way, why aren't you just turning your work in as a PDF? You could basically have a bunch of different Word documents all bundled together into one single PDF file.

Hello,

I’ve run into a frustrating issue with Word. When I’m working at the office using Word 2010 and save my file, everything seems fine. However, once I get home and try to open that same document in Word 2007, all the letters are smashed together without any spaces. It is incredibly tedious to go through and manually insert spaces between every single word. Does anyone have a solution for this? I am dealing with a fairly long document where every single letter is fused together 😢. To make matters worse, it doesn't matter which version I use to open it now; the spacing is broken across the board.

Thanks!

I’m thinking this might be one of those weird glitches with Office 2007 that they actually fixed in one of the service packs—pretty sure it was Office 2007 SP2. If you haven't updated your Office lately because (...), well, there you go. I'm a little worried there isn't a quick fix for it, though maybe you could just grab the original file from work 😕 Savoy over there in that 2003 format and everything should behave itself? Or, you know, just find a way to run the updates on your Office at home.

Hi there,

I’ll be the first to admit—I’m a total novice when it comes to writing Macros. I did manage to cobble one together using the macro recorder built right into Excel, though.
The Macro I put together wipes out all images, clears out empty rows (plus any colored ones, since they don't hold the data I need), and finally reorganizes my columns into a specific order. As part of that, it deletes two columns but merges their data into a single column.
Now I’m wondering: is there a way to run this Macro across every single sheet at once? Right now, I have to trigger it manually for every individual tab, and I'm dealing with about 50 sheets in one file.
Second thing on my mind: how can I add the letter "z" to a specific column, but only for the rows that actually contain data?
Third point—similar to the second, but instead of the letter "z," I need the cell to pull the name of the sheet (which, in my case, is just a code or a number).
Fourth thing—again, similar to the previous two, but instead of a letter or a sheet name, I need the cells to show "11xx." The "xx" would represent the previous month of the year. For example, if I run the Macro in May, the cells should show 1104; if I run it in June, it should show 1105.

Anyway, if anyone can help me tackle even one of these issues, please let me know.
Thanks in advance! 🙂

Sub Macro1()

Worksheet Sheets = Application.Sheets.Count

For i = 1 To Worksheet Sheets
Sheets(i).Select
FirstRow = Range("$A:$A").End(xlUp).Row
LastRow = Range("$A:$A").End(xlDown).Row

Range("B" & FirstRow, "B" & LastRow).Select
Selection.Value = "z"

Range("C" & FirstRow, "C" & LastRow).Select
Selection.Value = ActiveSheet.Name

Range("D" & FirstRow, "D" & LastRow).Select
If (Month(Now) > 10) Then
Elsa Month$ = "11" & (Month(Now()) - 1)
Else
Elsa Month$ = "110" & (Month(Now()) - 1)
End if Selection
Selection.Value = Elsa Month$

Next i

end Sub macro

The Macro iterates through every single sheet—so, I suppose, there is your template for how to structure the loop.

Column A is being used as the reference point to determine the range where the values actually get written (though, if you happen to have headers in there, you'll probably need to modify the expression for the FirstRow).

In columns B, C, and D, it populates the values that you—I assume—were looking for.

It’s really up to you what you want to write for the month in January, and what happens once we hit 2012 (I am guessing this "11" bit is intended for 2011... maybe?).🙂

So, I've got this massive headache. Every time I try to copy text from a PDF over into Word, it’s a total mess. I end up with these ridiculous line breaks everywhere, and I'm stuck manually stitching everything back together just to make it look like an actual paragraph. It's driving me crazy! Is there some kind of trick or a way to make it automatically merge into one smooth block of text? I'm running Office 2010.
