Sure thing! We'll save the 10th slot for analogbear40, assuming they don't show up for number nine. 🙂

There have been weeks where we saw fewer than 10 albums. Honestly, why shouldn't some weeks see more than 10 if there’s enough interest?

Fair enough. We started out with more than five suggestions, so pushing for over ten would’ve just felt forced. I mean, sure, letting people vote on multiple options definitely helps smooth things over, but let's be real—interest levels aren't exactly through the roof either...

Alright, look, the average number of posts per current album is actually trending up, which is great news! But it still feels like a lot of folks just want to drop a suggestion and run, rather than actually hanging out in the threads. Our whole goal was to make voting feel less like a rigid rule and more like a shared activity where nothing is being shoved down anyone's throat from the top down. Basically, the first ten were just a "first come, first served" kind of deal...

Still, I'd love to see even more people getting the chance to kick off their own threads. If that happens, I could easily just pull back my own suggestion whenever...

...I was just about to mention that the suggestion was posted on Thursday at 12:01 AM—which is absolutely brilliant—only to realize... wait, there were actually two more posted even earlier before midnight...😁

Man, if only we had that much agility or enthusiasm when it comes to the actual posts and discussions... though, let's be honest, mostly just on the topics that catch my eye...😵

Hildur Guđnadottir

žanr : dark ambient EDIT

EDIT: Pretty sure I'm the last one here, so technically nobody else should be posting after me per the rules😁

As for the genre, I'd say we're looking at dark ambient. If anyone thinks it's something else, let me know and set me straight.

And then redbear12 just drops this at the end.
That soundtrack she did is actually incredible...

You're the last one. 🙂

I listened to a fair amount of Hildur Guđnadottir-Chernobyl after she picked up that Emmy last year... and then maybe a Grammy or something like that later on.

Hildur actually used field recordings as the foundation for building her compositions. I was reading about how she did it—she went out to the actual site of the nuclear plant to capture authentic sounds; frequencies, wails, water dripping, that heavy atmosphere... all while working with Chris Watson, who captures those incredibly subtle (and quiet, hidden) nature sounds for David Attenborough documentaries...

So, I’m not really sure how to label the genre. It’s got industrial elements because things like clanging metal or creaking doors become part of the music, there's electronica and classical, and definitely ambient... yet it feels clean and minimal. But she managed to create music that powerfully recreates the feeling of that specific space (and the disaster itself), which I thought was just fantastic. It reminded me of Arvo Pärt quite a few times. It speaks to me.

EDIT: I think I’m the last one here, and according to the rules, nobody else should be posting after me. 😁

As far as the genre goes, I’d personally call it dark ambient. If anyone out there thinks it actually falls under something else, feel free to set me straight.

Yeah, this is dark ambient, no question about it. I used to spin a ton of Lustmord back in the day, and honestly, this hits very similar notes. I’ve always had a soft spot for this kind of music; it’s just so incredibly atmospheric.

When it comes to the overall vibe of Chernobyl, I can't help but feel it’s actually pretty similar to the movie Variola Vera.I've been sitting here staring at this video, trying to wrap my head around why it hits so hard, and honestly, it’s that specific kind of atmospheric weight you only get from certain eras of production. It reminds me of those late nights driving through the outskirts of Chicago when the city lights just fade into nothingness and it's just you and the hum of the engine. There's a texture here that feels intentional, almost heavy, like you can feel the air thickening as the track progresses. I remember listening to something similar back in college during one of those brutal winters where the silence in the dorm was almost deafening, and this carries that same sense of isolation. It isn't just background noise; it demands you sit with it, even if that discomfort is exactly what makes it work. Some people might find it too much, too dense, but I think that’s where the beauty lies—in that refusal to be easy or shallow. The subject matter hits close to home, and honestly, the movie is incredible. If you haven't seen it yet, do yourself a favor and go watch it. It's a must-see.

When I was awake😁 But I try not to throw out suggestions every single week, so please don't hold that against me.🙂

James's album from 1989 is such an interesting pick, especially since they scored way bigger hits later on with Laid and Seven i Gold Mother.

I was actually aiming for their early 80s era on purpose. By the time they hit Goldman Sachs, they were already massive. This live album only had a tiny print run because they were struggling with funding, so it’s become a bit of a holy grail for fans. I initially thought about picking Stutter, but this set pulls tracks from both of their first albums, making it a solid retrospective of their early years. Some of the older stuff isn't as widely known, which makes it worth a listen—there are some gems in there. They sound different here; more of a folk vibe, a bit rawer and more original before the heavy production took over. You can also link the whole thing back to the Madchester scene, the Hacienda era, and that entire movement. It’s similar to how people talk about the Stone Roses, but this specific period of American music is so fascinating it could easily fill several books.

Mezzanine it is 👍 For our fiftieth album, we're diving into Massive Attack, which is absolutely huge 👋

Regardless of the poll itself, I was listening to them just yesterday and they're honestly great 👍 I'll probably dive into the other albums people are mentioning too—might find something worth checking out.

Here’s another take on Sunday Morning from that Velvet Underground record that almost took the top spot. Massive Attack never really touched 😁

The whole concert is solid, assuming you haven't had your fill of James yet.

It feels like I’m stuck in some kind of haze right now, but I think Mezzanine might actually be the last Massive Attack album I truly sat down and listened to. It probably makes sense, though—back then, they were practically staples on my daily rotation. They were easily one of those heavy hitters you just couldn't escape.
