Training Day (2010)

"Elite Squad," also known as "Training Day," was a massive shock to moviegoers everywhere back in 2007, eventually becoming the most popular Brazilian film ever. It crushed it with both audiences and critics, picking up a bunch of awards at various festivals, including a Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival. The movie is based on the book by André Batista, Rodrigo Pimentel, and Luiz Eduardo Soares about the SWAT (Special Police Operations Battalion). They're an elite unit in Rio de Janeiro that goes after the absolute worst criminals, often using heavy-handed tactics to get the job done.
Since the movie raked in $14 million on a $4.4 million budget alongside all those awards, a sequel was pretty much a given.
José Padilha is back behind the camera to direct the sequel, and this time he's handling the script solo. We're also getting plenty of the original cast back, including Wagner Moura, André Ramiro, Milhem Cortaz, Maria Ribeiro, and Rodrigo Carvalho. We don't know the budget yet, but the US premiere is set for August 13, 2010.

Honestly, it feels like we're back at war again. I see that guy with the mustache is showing up once more; it seems like everyone is basically the same, even that pretty boy from City of God. I suppose they'll eventually drop a trailer with subtitles.

Just finished the first one! I'm seriously pumped to dive into the sequel next.👍

The first one was just so incredibly good, I’m actually a little worried this sequel might end up tarnishing such a perfect impression.
I truly, deeply hope I'm wrong about that...

This is a total must-watch. I’m betting it hits just as hard as the first one.

I'm definitely adding this to my watchlist! The first movie was honestly amazing, so I'm really hoping the sequel lives up to the hype.

To be honest, I just couldn't get into this first installment. Sure, there were a few interesting beats here and there, but when you hold it up against something like City of God or even Pixote? It feels completely inferior—frankly, it was often just tedious, regardless of how much the subject matter actually interests me.

As for Bear in Berlin, that felt like nothing more than a play for political correctness—which, let’s face it, isn't exactly surprising for a place like Berlin.

I'd much rather sit through a sequel to City of God. And speaking of gripping stuff, I really loved that documentary by Padilha about that kid—I can't recall the exact title, maybe it was about the bus hijacking?—where this young homeless kid hijacks a bus and every major news station in Brazil is broadcasting it live. It ended with the cops gunning him down from just a few feet away.

I don't know... there’s just something fundamentally missing from the first Training Day. If I'm being perfectly candid, the whole thing was a bit of a snooze.

Why would anyone write this? Like, what kind of mindset is that? Okay, you mentioned the movie and what happens, but what's the point of spoiling the ending? What does that actually achieve?

That event was such a massive deal back in Brazil—they tell you that right off the bat in the movie. Yeah, the cops killed him; it’s practically a documentary at that point.

So, calling it a spoiler is a bit of a stretch, don't you think?

In reality, that shooting is just the catalyst for the whole film. It's really an analysis of American society—specifically the incompetence and lack of training within the police force. In places like that, you can literally walk out with a uniform and a badge after just five days of training.

The fact that the kid was killed isn't some big twist for this documentary; it's the entire reason the film exists.

They kill him at the very end of the sequence, sure, but we know that from the opening credits. Padilha is interested in digging into the "why" behind the tragedy.

P.S. Do people here just skim everything? It’s not the first time I’ve seen this—I haven't been around long, but it seems like users pick out one sentence, ignore the rest, and jump to totally wrong conclusions.

Look, if you’re the type who actually enjoys the gritty reality of life in the slums of Rio—someone who appreciates movies like Pixote or Training Day—then this is definitely worth your time.

It's a documentary, really just raw, unfiltered stories from those forgotten souls living on the streets of Brazil. It's the very same footage that earned Padilha the funding for Training Day. 😉

Though, if you want my two cents, I think he leaned a bit too hard into the dramatization; honestly, City of God is a much better film.

Hopefully, it holds up at least somewhat close to the quality of the first one.
And honestly, I don't buy the argument that New Jerusalem is significantly better.
They're both solid films that essentially tell the same story, just through different lenses.

The only thing that movie is missing is an audience that actually gives a damn😉😁😁

And how can you even call it boring!? That flick is anything but boring...🤷
