Hey. Did some digging online and stumbled upon Komodo Club. Training takes place over at Spanish Gym. Coach is Igor Kolakušić. Anyone here actually know anything about this club?

Yeah, that's the Sparta gym—the old Tep building. He doesn't run the training sessions anymore, some guy working for him does now.$100

To be fair, I am interested in MMA, so let's roll with it. Anyone have recommendations for a decent club in NYC?

Oh, sure, "get it under control"... just so you don't make things awkward for your partner when you get an erection...🤣

Does anyone have recommendations for a boxing gym in the city where they actually put in quality work and prepare people for competitions? I know about the Leonardo gym, but it’s a bit of a trek for me. Maybe you have some other suggestions?

It would probably help if you mentioned which neighborhoods you're looking in...

I suppose I’m not quite at Leonardo da Vinci levels of expertise yet... but I am curious about where else one can find high-quality training. I'm looking for places where you actually learn how to box, rather than just hitting a heavy bag. It would be ideal if sessions were held four or five times a week. As far as location goes, the closer to downtown, the better.

I've been looking for a while now for where women can train boxing in NYC. Is it possible at St. Jude's or maybe at Champion's?
Does anyone have any experience with that?
P.S. Is it okay if it's just recreational, rather than intense training three times a week?

One question regarding heavy bags. Is anyone here using freestanding boxing bags, and are they actually worth it?

Greetings.

This might not be the ideal venue for this inquiry, but I would appreciate some insight.

I am in the process of purchasing a heavy bag to use for ground and pound training while wearing MMA gloves. I plan to order through Fitness Depot. I am currently deciding between these two options:

Which one do you recommend? Would the first option, with its softer filling, be better for protecting my wrists and shoulders?

What condition is the punching bag in? What are its width and weight?

Hey Engine25, I’ve been rocking a freestanding bag myself and honestly? I’m loving it. But man, I ran into two little hiccups along the way. First off—total rookie move—I actually filled mine with water instead of sand, so every time I threw a heavy side kick, the whole thing would just slide all over the floor. Total mess, right? Second issue is the striking surface itself... it starts getting thin right around waist height, which makes training those low kicks, you know, knees or thighs, pretty much impossible. Personally, I think it’s totally worth dropping a few extra bucks to grab one with a longer striking area, unless you're strictly a boxer or something.

I'm looking for some boxing gloves, specifically 12oz. Can anyone tell me which brand is actually top-tier and where I could pick them up?

Adidas, Everlast.
Check out Pride over on Maksimirska—just Google them, they have their pricing listed online.
Or try Profightstore.
Most other specialty combat sports shops should carry them too.
As for why you're looking for the "best"... are you a pro? Because if you were actually a professional, you probably wouldn't be asking for gear advice on an internet forum. If you're just a hobbyist, honestly, just grab whatever is cheapest. Something like Pride will work just fine... everything tends to fall apart eventually anyway, depending on how hard you hit things.

Is there seriously not a single boxer from the city around here to answer this while we're stuck in quarantine?
Or maybe someone from the coast could help Charlotte23 out...

Look, I’m just a recreational lifter, but I went hunting for the "best" specifically so I wouldn't end up with some cheap junk that snaps after three workouts. All they told me was to make sure the gloves were actual leather and not some synthetic fake stuff...🤷

Hey everyone!
So, I’m a woman... um... of a certain age 🙂, and I have absolutely zero experience, but I've decided I really want to learn how to actually take someone down. Does anyone have any suggestions for a specific martial art or maybe a local gym that offers beginner classes for adults—and, more importantly—won't drive me crazy with all that intense breathing exercise stuff? 🙂
Thanks 🙂

Oh, I totally forgot to mention—I'm looking for something here in the States, specifically near Chicago.

Do yourself a favor and don't start training at all...

1. You'll have the wrong motivations.
2. You won't actually want to learn.

Look, I’m a woman too, and I’ve been getting into kickboxing lately...
but honestly? I don't think I could actually take anyone down in a fight...
the workouts are just incredible, though—it’s like that heavy bag just absorbs all your tension, stress, and any pent-up anger you're carrying 😉 and you end up feeling absolutely amazing, healthy, and just... well, everything else, I guess

Honestly, I'm just so fed up with how people let certain types of aggression or venting directed at women slide—and in my case, I feel like I can only stay quiet because if I actually spoke up, the best I’d get is a slap in the face.
The last time it happened, it was some obnoxious teenager being a jerk, but what am I supposed to do? I can't exactly grab him by the ear and march him back home to his parents...
