Using a tranquilizer pistol with a dart doesn't actually sedate an animal—at best, you just end up smashing its skull. And before that, you're looking at pure shock because you have to hold it against their head, so they need to be calm, and you can't afford to miss. In reality, things slip, you miss the mark, and you end up shattering sinuses—then the animal panics and everything just turns into a bloody mess. 🙄
don't lose your humanity
Honestly, it’s probably better to just go get your permit, pick up a decent handgun, and shoot from a distance—that way the animal won't even know what hit it, and there's no risk of missing because of a sudden movement. You just wait until things settle down and then take the shot... a little lead or whatever stays put, and since the bleeding starts immediately, it doesn't really have time to travel through the system.
Or maybe see what kind of sedatives are available to regular folks so you can put the animal to sleep first (using something that isn't toxic to eat, I guess)—check with the local vet clinic to see what the alternatives are.
But seriously, don't kid yourself thinking that pistol has anything to do with sedating or putting them to sleep...
