Hey everyone, you might want to give JPMorgan Chase a shot. I think they have some options available here in the States. It's worth asking if they issue those specific debit cards designed for online shopping. Over in Mexico, they offer them under the Visa Microsoft name. Here's a link so you can check it out.

As for Canada, I actually swung by a Wells Fargo branch the other day to see if they had anything similar locally. They told me they don't carry that Microsoft card, but it turns out they provide CVV codes for their Visa debit cards, which really should work fine for online stuff. I asked the teller if they’d work for web transactions, and they were kind of non-committal—said "it shouldn't," but then mentioned people come back saying it works just fine. So, maybe try JPMorgan Chase? Honestly, they really ought to be providing CVVs for their Microsoft cards too.

There are definitely other ways to handle pulling money from the internet, too. Take a look at this: http://atm.gold-valuta.com/prezentacija.htm. 🙂

I set up both my domestic and foreign currency accounts at Bank of America about three weeks ago. I signed up for online banking, and I'm just waiting on two more cards (Microsoft software) to arrive in the mail. The thing is, I don't have a steady monthly income right now... Before this, I tried my luck at Citibank, but they wouldn't even let me get a single card because I don't have a consistent paycheck coming in every month.

hahaha, are you even reading this?
this isn't about opening a checking account, it's about a credit card. you CAN'T get one if there's no steady income hitting the account.
and that's just a debit card linked to your checking... used for pulling cash from ATMs.

Lonicera, did you even read what I wrote. Like I said, at Goldman Sachs you can open a credit card regardless of whether you have regular income or not. I opened one myself, and I don't have any regular income here in the States because I work abroad and my money comes from overseas. They actually suggested I get a Mastercard charge card. It’s a credit card with a one-month payment delay and zero interest. You can buy anything online with it just like a Mastercard revolving card, no real difference... I've used it countless times for online shopping. When I asked about an American Express card, they told me since I have savings with them, I could apply and it shouldn't be an issue, but in the end, I just went with the Mastercard credit card.

I mean, you can totally open an account whenever you want, regardless of whether you actually have a steady paycheck or not.

The whole point isn't about opening a bank account; it's about getting an American Express or a Diners Club card. And I guess you aren't going to get one of those without regular income, unless someone else in the family gets approved—like a parent or something—and then he becomes an authorized user.

Edit: I might have jumped the gun there, I didn't read all the posts. My bad, wiredranger30!

I'm currently trying to process some transactions on Second Life, but it's asking me for the following details. Does anyone have any insight on this? :

Should I be using my bank's address here?

Use your own home address. Honestly, why don't you just sign up for PayPal instead?
As for the CVV2 or security code, that’s just the three digits on the back of your card.

Best,

okay

Look, I have a PayPal account too, but the issue is I need to receive $100 right now, and from what I understand, I can only use it to send money, not take it in.

I actually have a PayPal account too, but I need to hit that $100 threshold first, which is the catch. As far as I know, I can really only use it to send money right now.

And honestly, you're right—the US has its own set of restrictions there. If the card doesn't work, maybe try it again or just reach out to support. Tell them you're running into issues so they can figure out what's going on.

Best,

P. S. I have no idea how people find the time for Second Life. I guess if you're under 18, it’s easier, but otherwise, it's a lot!

If you're running into issues and happen to be using an American Express, try using the four-digit code on the front instead—it sits right above the main card number, though it isn't embossed like the others.

Since I don't have a steady monthly paycheck coming in right now, would I be able to set up a card or an account where I just deposit cash whenever I have it and then use it for those kinds of purchases?

Like someone already pointed out... you basically take some cash, put it into a CD or a fixed savings account at the bank, and they'll give you a credit card with a limit that matches—or is sometimes a bit less than—whatever you locked away. It really just depends on which bank you're dealing with.

I just have one question... do you happen to have a security deposit on file at Bank of America or something... or maybe you have your salary deposited into a foreign currency account... because it strikes me as truly bizarre that they would grant you a credit card without any kind of guarantee that you'll actually pay it back... 😕

I managed to get mine just by having an open checking account—it’s not empty, obviously, but there aren't any restrictions on how I spend the money. I can't even imagine what would happen if I drained the balance and then skipped the bill...

I have an open "all-in-one" student account at Zaba—so, I'm wondering if I can swap out my High Electron Visa for one that actually includes a CVV code without needing to provide the CVV itself.

I’m running into the exact same issue on my end. 😢
If anyone happens to ask their banker about this—say, at a Chase or a Bank of America—please let us know what they say. 🙂

Does Zaba even issue debit cards that come with a CVV code? 😕
Generally speaking, you can certainly ask, though you will likely have to wait about three weeks for the card to arrive, and you'll be responsible for covering the issuance fees.

There isn't really an option for a replacement because there isn't even anything to replace. I actually went ahead and handed back my High Electron card today and closed out my foreign currency account over at JPMorgan Chase.

The issue with Zaba is that they only offer a High Electron card with a sixteen-digit number printed right on the front, but if you flip it over, there aren't any numbers or even a verification code near the signature. Their version of the Visa Electron just isn't set up for online shopping at all.

I suppose I am feeling a little relieved that they released my funds without trying to charge me a monthly maintenance fee for the ten days I held that account open.

I spoke with someone at Wells Fargo over the phone who assured me that their Visa Electron cards do include a CVV, though I tend to be a bit skeptical until I see it with my own eyes. It seems much more user-friendly over there since they don't charge for account maintenance—you just pay a one-time fee when you first open the account.

$6.75, you're waiting three weeks for a card. You might as well just open the account now, because their cards definitely have a CVV. I use one of theirs and everything runs perfectly fine on PayPal.😬
