Elizabeth Mendoza said:The burgers at Megic are way too dry for my liking, and the fries? Totally salt overkill. You honestly need a whole tank of water after just one serving of those fries. It’s basically just a pile of salt with traces of potato, not the other way around.

Personally, I think the Big Tasty is actually great, which is pretty much the only reason I even bother going there... the sauce is spot on, not dry at all, and the size is solid. Plus, I actually like my fries salty, so I can't say I ever get enough 🤣, though I guess I'm biased since I love everything covered in salt.

Well, look,
The thing is, every single restaurant is absolutely packed right now.
I’ve honestly only seen crowds like this back in the States, specifically at McDonald's, because that's usually the cheapest way to grab a bite on the go.
Even here at the local arena after a movie, you’ve got ten different restaurants to choose from—most of them actually being better than McDonald's—yet somehow, the line at the Golden Arches stretches all the way to the other side of the wall...

I'm right in that neighborhood, and let me tell you, it’s always like that—not just on Sundays. Sometimes there's a massive line of cars backed up toward the main highway.

Paul Martinez73 said:Every single person talking trash about McDonald's is going to start lecturing you about Submarine, Papas, or those other trendy spots that "aren't garbage" because "they use fresh ingredients," when you're paying $30 for a burger $13 and getting the exact same crap.

Besides, what’s really the difference between making a burger at home and grabbing one at McDonald's? Unless I personally slaughter the poultry, grind the meat myself, and smash the patty...

Because I highly doubt a pre-packaged patty from Walmart is any better than one from McDonald's, and the same goes for the lettuce—not to mention those plastic-wrapped "Burger buns" that could sit on a shelf for a month. Or frozen fries; it's all the same thing.

Sure, let's agree that McDonald's has more additives and preservatives, but that's totally negligible if you're eating rationally and keeping your diet varied...

I eat both expensive burgers and McDonald's; at the end of the day, it's all just meat, bread, lettuce, tomato, sauces, and whatever extra toppings you want. There’s nothing quite like waiting at some random grill spot at 3 or 4 in the morning on a Saturday just to get a patty flipped quickly because I'm starving. I do enjoy a high-end burger at those fancy burger joints, and they might taste better than McDonald's to me, but probably not enough to call them "better food." It's not like McDonald's is poison, nor are those fancy places selling caviar. Since I only go out for a burger once or twice a month, I find it hard to weigh the pros and cons of choosing one over the other. After all, McDonald's didn't make billions for no reason. It might be a cliché argument that could apply to anything, but people don't stand in line because they're being forced to (even today, when competition isn't being wiped out by decree). They know what they're doing, and their value for money is good enough to keep millions of customers coming back.

We have several places around Washington, D.C. now, including a few pizzerias that claim to sell "real food" instead of the standard pizza everyone else makes, but they charge $40$23 instead of $40. I go to those places occasionally, but I find myself eating the $40 ones more often, and it doesn't bother me much.

Is that the American version of McDonald's?

A burger is the ultimate comfort food, much like pizza, but looking at these crowds, I get the impression that for some people, this is their only real foray into that kind of cuisine. But hey, everyone spends their money however they please.

@restlesssurfer97, I also frequent those pricier burger joints, and I have to say, I can actually taste the difference. At McDonald's, everything tastes exactly how you'd expect—it’s assembly-line food.
I know a few spots where the burgers are significantly better, but you end up waiting half an hour because everything is made to order. Even the patty is formed right in front of you, rather than flying off a conveyor belt with that rubbery aftertaste.
A burger like that simply cannot cost$6.75 the same as anything else, nor could it ever match McDonald's prices because they don't have that level of centralized procurement and bulk buying power. It's just like how some cheap junk is always going to be cheaper at Lidl than at some tiny corner bodega.

I have no clue exactly where it is located, but we've hit up that Big 5 near the downtown intersection a few times now, and honestly, we killed it every single time. The buns are incredible—not some soft rubbery mess, but not overdone and rock hard either. They are just perfect. The meat is juicy and thick, the sauce is spot on, the toppings are loaded, and the prices are actually pretty reasonable too.

For me, that’s easily the best burger I've had in Washington, D.C., though obviously, that's just my personal take.

If it's being served right in the middle of the square, then yeah, it fits that whole European concept perfectly.
I've never actually given Nissan a shot myself; I always just assumed they were some mediocre knockoff of McDonald's.
Maybe I'll swing by if you're really insisting it's better...

I mean, if a burger costs $22 then I guess it's only fair to expect a noticeable difference. I'm not denying that, which is probably why I hit up those places more often than McDonald's. But I still think McDonald's isn't actually *that* far behind. Like, if we're heading home late after a movie or a game, McDonald's is just the reliable go-to, and honestly, it hits the spot every time.

Well, it costs exactly what it's worth. Didn't I make that point clear already?
But you have similar concepts out there, like KFC or Burger King. The prices and quality are pretty much on par. Over there, nobody even shows up, yet here we are, standing in lines fifty meters long...

I just don't get it. Is it some aggressive marketing ploy or those ridiculous little plastic toys they give out?

Don't quote me on this because I can't double-check right now, but I think prices were maybe about $15 dollars higher. It was a massive burger, though. I've had the BBQ and the Smoky a few times, and honestly, the flavor is top-tier.

I suppose KFC is a massive global franchise, much stronger than what we see locally. It could be that McDonald's just built its reputation here earlier, or maybe Americans just generally have a bigger appetite for pork and veal. Pizza Hut or Domino's Pizza are huge brands globally, but they aren't really present here, and I wonder if their style of pizza would even work with our tastes. I heard Domino's might be coming, but with this economic crisis, I'm not so sure.

The way McDonald's operates here is by putting large drive-in locations right along major avenues, but nestled within neighborhoods so they aren't stuck out in the middle of nowhere. That way, they attract both drivers and people walking by in the evening. You get parking, restrooms, and compared to McDonald's in Europe, they are actually quite clean (which usually seems to be a struggle over there). They also have those nice little things like specialty coffees and ice cream. They were even among the first to partner up with Glova and similar services. They are pretty strong; I guess nothing they do is by accident.

Subway is making another attempt here in the States. They didn't quite take off during their first try.

Honestly, the Long Chicken from Burger King is hands down the best thing on the menu, I swear I eat it with pure bliss, plus their fries are actually top-tier, though I’m not even sure if they have it where I live since I don't live in a major city like NYC or something, but man, when I was traveling, I was absolutely crushing those. Subway is also pretty solid too because you can mix and match whatever you want, but I usually only hit up McDonald's if I'm starving and there's one right in front of me, because honestly, I've kind of grown to hate KFC lately—I mean, sometimes you get lucky and bite into some perfectly clean white meat which is great, but most of the time it's just insanely greasy, it's honestly gross.
Pizza Hut, Company, and all that... it's basically just fuel to fill your stomach, pretty much the same deal as McDonald's.
To be real, the only thing that actually hits the spot for me out of everything is that Long Chicken. 🙏🙏

I managed to stir up quite the debate. Mission accomplished ☕

The only reason I ever hit up McDonald's is for a quick ice cream or some fries. Everything else they serve just tastes incredibly bland and repetitive. In Miami, there are endless fast-food spots offering much better quality for basically the same price. Places like Kaleta are cheaper and infinitely more delicious. And that’s not even touching on the higher-end options...

Well, I suppose that might actually be their biggest strength. They have something for everyone. I bet a whole crowd of people heads to McDonald's just for the ice cream, or maybe even just to grab a coffee.

I visited a Pizza Hut about twenty years ago in Budapest, and honestly, the pizza was just like what you get at our local pizzerias.
It was actually quite good. If I were talking about Washington, D.C., I’d say it falls somewhere in the middle of the pack.
Maybe things have changed since then? Who knows.
