Ashley Vaughn79 said:Your main account is still banned for another 24 hours, yet here you are posting from an alt.
Usually, other mods would grant permissions to an alt and then extend the original ban by a week as punishment for using a secondary account.

I suppose it wouldn't be a good idea for me to do that again, right?

People tend to call for stricter moderation only when they think it won't affect them personally, assuming it will only target those they don't like.
That isn't how it works.

It's true, partial removals don't just happen on their own. 😁

Even if requested, all active mods have to agree before anything is removed.
Who knows who will be stepping into my role one day.

I'm not planning on stepping down right now, but life is unpredictable.

As a moderator, you really ought to know that the rule against using two accounts only applies if you're posting within the same sub-forum. You should know that... since you're a moderator. So, how is it possible you don't?

Since we aren't talking about the same sub-forum (this PDF section, right?), you don't actually have any grounds for that. Besides, I can easily find a Nicin PM where she gave me permission to use two accounts on the US site, provided I didn't confuse anyone—which, in my experience, hasn't happened once on the US site.

You still haven't grasped it—people are asking for strict moderation that applies equally to everyone, not double standards where the rules change depending on who is being watched. I highly doubt you're dim enough to miss that; rather, I think you're just playing dumb. It’s much easier to lean on a strawman argument and falsely accuse people of wanting special treatment than it is to actually perform quality moderator work on the US site using consistent criteria for everyone.

Also, this whole attempt to shift the blame onto Mickey Mouse—who apparently bothers everyone (and let's be honest, you aren't so clueless that you don't see what you're trying to do)—is a total wash. He's the "problem" now, along with anyone else who finds the current moderation standards frustrating, instead of addressing the actual group of frustrated trolls and one-liner spammers.

But hey, I won't hold it against you. Given the circumstances...

There is a massive difference between ten percent of the community having an issue with the Moderators and ninety percent of them feeling the same way.
Arguing about how nothing is ever perfect just doesn't hold any weight in the real world.

Or maybe it's a combination of things...

There isn't just one "biggest" mistake.

It’s really about a series of errors. To be more precise, it’s a failure to maintain a healthy relationship with the child—failing to provide a warm environment that is emotionally, mentally, and physically safe during those formative years.

But we have to remember that parents carry the mistakes of their own parents within them. There is this generational cycle of errors, if not outright trauma.

I've been saying for years that the greatest tragedy on this planet is that anyone is allowed to reproduce.

Natural ways to deal with depression in Psychology & Therapy ·
restlesshound48 said:Sometimes I think—or maybe I just refuse to believe, because that feels like too strong a word—but I don't know what else to call it.🙄

I’m not sure if there's any hope left for anything. I don't personally believe there is, but I'm asking here in case anyone actually knows otherwise.

Is there a "natural" way to manage or heal depression? Something I can work on by myself?

When you're dealing with depression, you're ultimately fighting that battle on your own. Every method people suggest—whether it’s therapy, lifestyle changes, or medication—is technically "natural" in its own way (though I suppose one could argue about what counts as unnatural), but the real question is how effective and sustainable those methods actually are in the long run. Having support and understanding from the people around you certainly provides a much-needed tailwind, but even with all that encouragement, the individual still has to be the one to find their own path. At the end of the day, you have to be the one to find the internal motivation to actually get moving.
You have to avoid standing still, isolating yourself from everyone, or just sitting around spiraling about the meaning of life. It’s vital to set small, realistic goals every single day. That creates a steady stream of momentum that keeps you from just lying in bed and letting the day slip through your fingers. Basically, less overthinking, more doing.
Of course, through psychotherapy, a person can reach those genuine breakthroughs and gain a much deeper understanding of their own situation. It helps strip away all that unnecessary guilt—after all, life happens to the best of us. We couldn't control certain things in our past, but we absolutely have control over the work we do on ourselves today.

Can money actually buy happiness? in Psychology ·
Benjamin Taylor90 said:Money just smooths out the edges of life. If you're already miserable—say, someone who’s lonely but actually has their finances in order—a sudden windfall from a Chase account isn't going to fix a single thing about your existence. Been there, done that.

Let me rephrase this my way.
Is a person happier if they have enough to cover their needs, or if they're sitting on millions or billions? 🍿

It's debatable..

Can money actually buy happiness for the middle class or the wealthy? 🍿

Exactly! It lifts that heavy weight of existential dread off your shoulders, and let's be honest, it lets you jump on medical solutions way faster if something actually goes wrong.
When you have a sensible amount of cash to handle those basics, your mind is free to actually function. You can focus on chasing those genuine moments of joy instead of just surviving. Plus, I truly believe that when people aren't constantly stressed about bills, they tend to be much happier and far better at spreading that positive energy to everyone else. 🙂
Fresh Windows install, but something's wrong... in IT Support ·
slylynx26 said:Please help, give me some advice, anything at all...

I just did a clean install of Windows on my laptop (wiped everything and started from scratch), but I made a massive mistake—I forgot to back up one incredibly important file before I wiped the drive...

Is there any way at all that someone could still recover it?😢

Well, theoretically, yes. However, I don't have any specific software recommendations for you right this second. (I'm honestly not sure if Recuva or similar tools can handle a full OS reinstallation) but the most critical thing is to stop using that computer immediately. I'm sure someone else will jump in with more concrete steps on how to track down that "lost" file.
Existential dread: Does any of this actually matter? in Psychology & Therapy ·
Carl Rivera43 said:Look, just give us something concrete to work with here. Nobody’s actually interested in these endless analyses, you know? You’re just venting for the sake of venting. Today, while I was working downtown, I saw people who could barely even walk—I mean it, they were struggling just to get by. I saw folks out there who have absolutely nothing. They’re going through it, truly. They're having a hard time, whereas you? You don't have to worry about being late to the office.

Joseph Bailey41 said:If you’ve actually hit rock bottom, then honestly, that’s a good thing—it means you can finally push off the floor and swim back up. Though, if I’m being real, I don't think you're quite there yet. When you truly hit the bottom, you stop worrying about all the little details and just realize, "Okay, this is it. Enough is enough. Something has to change." And that's when the work starts.

Seriously though, I really recommend seeing a therapist. It used to be easier back in the day, like when you could just call a student hotline or something. You just vent. You don't even have to bring up voices or any of the heavy stuff right away; you just talk, and they're there to listen. Over time, you'll start to realize that you aren't as "weird" or "different" as you feel—everyone is dealing with their own version of the same crap, just wrapped in different colored paper. For some, it looks like anxiety; for others, it's depression. But underneath it all, there's this sense of meaninglessness that isn't entirely unfounded, because life doesn't come with a built-in purpose—you have to create it yourself. Once you grasp that, the struggle turns into a bit of a game. You can actually learn to laugh at yourself because you don't take everything quite so personally anymore, which brings a certain lightness to things. You can still feel sad or whatever, but it stops feeling like a matter of life and death. Tragedy slowly starts turning into comedy. It won't happen overnight, but it moves in that direction.

There are two very constructive pieces of advice here. 👍

Get to actual, concrete work as soon as possible... don't waste time wondering if it "matters" or not, because if you hesitate, you're right back at square one.

The advice from Flying is to stop obsessing over your own issues and try looking at the world around you instead. Being hyper-fixated on yourself only drags you deeper into the hole.

Both of these tips really helped me out. And since The Master has been sitting on the couch for a while now, he knows exactly how much I used to spin my wheels before I finally pushed myself to find real work.

The consequences remain for a lifetime. We are talking about permanent scars, I guess. But surely, a person navigates life with a bit more grace when they actually understand who they are, why they act the way they do, and what shaped them. At the end of the day, being conscious matters.🧐

I'm with you there, especially on the bolded part. The consequences and the scars don't just vanish; they require their own specific healing. You know, I know, and plenty of other people feel this too. But I never actually claimed that awareness is a "solution" to the problem (man, if only it were... you know how much that would help). Let me expand on my point a little.
restlesstiger49 said:It sounds like your mother is a textbook toxic parent. There’s actually a famous book titled "Toxic Parents" that dives deep into this exact dynamic.
Given how she treated you, it’s honestly no surprise you're feeling the fallout. When a child is handled that way, they end up internalizing those parental attitudes through a process called introjection. It basically prevents you from ever developing a healthy sense of self-confidence.
To be blunt, your mom isn't as mentally strong as you might think. Truly resilient people empower others to find their own solutions; they don't belittle people, they encourage growth. Using aggression is just a sign of weakness. When she insists, "Do it my way," she's really just acting out her own immaturity and projecting her unresolved traumas—she likely dealt with the same thing from her own parents.
The good news is that by educating yourself on the impact of this kind of parenting and doing the inner work, you can start to recognize these negative influences and their effects. Just keep in mind that healing is a long road; it doesn't happen overnight.

What I meant to convey is that if someone is carrying a heavy burden of guilt—thinking things like, "Why am I like this? Why is my self-esteem so low and why am I so withdrawn?"—that weight can be lifted. It happens because they realize they were essentially conditioned and raised in the wrong direction, leaving no room for a healthy self to develop. I think I'm being clearer now. If you're open to it, I'll send the rest of my thoughts via PM.
