Sex and violence in movies in Movies ·
Scott Long71 said:It seems to me that the core intention behind that article on Monitor was to highlight the sheer hypocrisy of our standards. On one hand, we see strict prohibitions against explicit pornography on television networks, yet on the other, the most brutal scenes of violence—the kind that can leave lasting scars on your psyche—are permitted to air without hesitation! Doesn't it make you wonder which is truly worse, and what should actually be protected: explicit sexuality or explicit brutality? As Richard Hernandez13 so aptly pointed out (much like Hitchcock and those other great masters), true power and persuasiveness can be achieved without relying on graphic scenes; indeed, one can achieve a cinematic reality that feels even more visceral than life itself. Is there any doubt that Noah is a master of this craft, performing his work with absolutely no inhibitions? He won't show you the act of penetration, because why would he need to? His approach is almost documentary-like; there is no cutting away within sequences, no artificial feeling of a staged play or a Hollywood production. There are no editing tricks or sleight of hand; everything is incredibly convincing and "explicit" in its own way. That rape scene is one single, continuous shot from the moment they step onto the street until Monica Winfrey's head hits the concrete in the passage ten minutes later. It is directed to absolute perfection.

I remember watching Malnar's show, and in those problematic moments, they would simply cut to images of the guests, showing only glimpses of the film to maintain distance. They were distancing themselves from the footage, using it merely as a catalyst for discussion in a typical, somewhat drunken talk show setting. And wouldn't you agree that the "most shocking" thing that could have been seen in that film was actually just sex?

My point is – if someone is going to go out of their way to censor something on television, I would argue that extremely cruel scenes of violence should be prioritized over sex.

But that isn't mentioned anywhere in the article at all!!!!

Let us set that specific topic aside for a moment—this article is truly the worst kind: shallow, superficial, and blatantly biased.
It is as if the author himself doesn't even know what he is advocating for or what his exact stance is!

If you intend to express a viewpoint in a piece of writing, then you must possess the skill to do so clearly and know exactly what you want to communicate!

However, if you do not wish to state a position as the author (or if you want to imply it without being obvious), then you should construct a neutral topic, interview several relevant contributors, find data to support your points, and then assemble it into a cohesive article...

Please, just find and hire some decent journalists!
Just one single, principled individual would suffice!

I had a feeling you were going to misinterpret my sentence entirely!

When I say, 'I would worry about myself...', it means that I—goldberry—would be the one feeling concerned for my own well-being, rather than suggesting that you need to go worrying about yourself...

Laura Roberts61, you seem to think Million Dollar Baby is actually great.
Honestly, I would be genuinely concerned about my own judgment if I found this movie appealing.

It isn't just loaded with sentimentality—if you want to see true pathos, look at what they did with Million Dollar Baby.

I found myself rolling my eyes through most of MDB, yet I was moved to tears by In Deep.

But fine... I suppose I understand that there are certain mediocre films that exist simply to, as Cyn puts it, punch people in the face with heavy-handed melodrama just to make them realize that something FATEFULLY IMPORTANT is happening!

What truly caught me off guard, however, was the sheer number of people who feel this way—on the thread for MDB, I was sitting there deeply, profoundly disappointed by the film, fully expecting a wave of criticism, only to find everyone showering it with uncritical praise...

Ah well, I suppose everyone deserves exactly as much subtlety as they are capable of grasping!

They haven't been officially confirmed just yet, but don't go thinking they've been canceled either!
Everything is still up in the air for now, isn't it?

But hasn't it already been confirmed that they won't be hitting the big festival circuit here, though there's a chance they could pull off a standalone concert in Chicago or perhaps somewhere else in the Midwest?

Spencer was supposed to be 14, but it looks like they're settling on 10 instead
or perhaps I have that backwards?
🤔

And yet, the tickets are already on sale!

Personally, I would give this film a respectable four out of five stars, though I have noticed that the critics—well, at least the ones here in the States—seem to be absolutely showering it with glowing reviews and endless praise, not to mention those prestigious Oscar nominations...

What are your thoughts on all this?

Uninvited guests... in Lonely Hearts ·
Well, how on earth can I express this without sounding completely pathetic?

Nothing much, really—I had actually started asking myself those same difficult questions lately... yet, somehow, I haven't lost my sense of hope just yet... and what else is there to say?
I have fallen in love
And yes, I am absolutely thrilled!

Brenda Rodriguez17 said:It was reckless, absolutely. But then again, isn't that just classic Leigh dark humor? It’s exactly the kind of wit I find myself completely enamored with!

I can't say I truly believed he spoke without thinking, though.
Rather, don't you think he did it quite deliberately to lift everyone's spirits... yet isn't that precisely what makes it so devastating when the reality sets in and everything feels even heavier?

Anyway, perhaps I am overanalyzing this far too much!

steelstag4 said:Or were you thinking specifically about drug themes and dealing?😕
Or perhaps it's the social poverty that inevitably drags those issues along with it?

And I find myself in complete agreement with Maristella! A talented (and ideally innovative) director can take absolutely any subject matter and make it shine.

As for the film itself— 👍
I simply adore heavy, soul-stirring themes when they are handled without falling into cheap sentimentality.

Yes, yes... I already touched upon all those topics and explained why they feel so overdone from a thematic standpoint right there in my previous post...

And wait just a moment, why does everyone assume I am being argumentative or overly critical? If I say a theme is exhausted, yet the execution is absolutely brilliant—is that not the highest possible praise I can give a director?😕
Vera Drake in Movies ·
ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!
I am firmly convinced that no Hollywood starlet could ever snatch an Oscar away from the actress portraying Vera Drake
Maria Full of Grace in Movies ·
I believe there might already be an existing thread regarding this topic...🤔 or perhaps we were previously debating this film within the discussion about Zff...

So, allow me to reiterate my stance—from a thematic perspective, both the execution and the overall presentation were simply magnificent!

Nicholas Perez33 said:. Everyone acts so incredibly friendly and respectful toward one another, don't they? They all pretend everything is just wonderful and cool, but isn't it true that deep down, they can't stand each other? Wouldn't they much rather tear their own hands apart than collaborate with some overrated band that feels "so ten years ago" yet somehow manages to snatch up more publicity than anyone else?

EXACTLY!
Bo's fighting Lee - protecting oneself in Movies ·
My very first instinct was to think, "Good grief, they are actually exploiting someone with a mental disability just to boost their own profile"...but, if I take a moment to really reflect on it—Bore actually fulfilled his childhood dream...one way or another...can you truly ask for anything more than that?

That being said, the movie IS far too long...that scene involving the monster from the swamp is completely superfluous...and once the plot moves toward the prophet—good heavens, it just drags on forever...
