goldenhound32 said:You know, I felt the same way about the mortars. It didn't sit right with me at all. Especially when they were tearing them apart with them, and then, the moment one of the Marines goes down, the attacks just... stop. Talk about impeccable timing.

And by the way, those local guys who supposedly showed up to help... how is it that they only decided to make an appearance once everything was already over?

Two people died. There’s even a part where one of the characters brings up the possibility that someone leaked their location, but that whole thing stays pretty unresolved—kind of like how the Ambassador's body ended up at the hospital, or who actually carried him out of the house...

And btw, those local guys who showed up to help them... why did they wait until everything was basically over to roll up?

Actually, they didn't. They arrived, and then that final mortar attack kicked off. Once that was over, everyone cleared out of the base fast because they were terrified another one was coming. Also, from what I've read, there wasn't any delay in getting to the embassy—the CIA chief didn't betray them or anything, and the cars moved out immediately after the call for help went through. That bit was mostly added just for the drama... though some of the crazy stuff is actually true, like that scene where they're being hunted down the road and someone drives a burning car straight into the base.

Pasmater, when Bay hits the mark, he really nails it. This one's solid—honestly, I think it actually beats Black Hawk Down for me. The pacing, the action, the way he captures that pure sense of chaos... it all works. Even if the camera wanders off a bit here and there—you know how it is—the vibe stays mostly grounded and easy to follow. It doesn't go out of its way to point fingers at who did what, which gives the whole thing a bit of an Alamo or Heat feel...
It’s dragging on forever—honestly, it feels like it could go on until the heat death of the universe—but there's absolutely zero substance to it... nothing interesting happening at all.
Clash of the Titans (2016) in Movies ·
Eric Hayes61 said:Here are my thoughts, and honestly, they aren't great. 😁

"Clash of the Titans" is the kind of movie that felt doomed from the moment that first trailer dropped. Right from the jump, it was painfully obvious that the entire thing was built on a foundation of CGI, prioritizing visual spectacle over everything else. I went into this fantasy action adventure set in ancient Egypt with incredibly low expectations, if any at all. My main motivation for picking up "Clash of the Titans" was a genuine love for historical epics. While the genre itself makes it clear that this isn't quite that kind of film, the setting of Egypt and the blending of Egyptian and Greek mythology caught my interest. Since "Clash of the Titans" is clearly aiming to be a mythological blockbuster, you really have to calibrate your expectations before the opening credits even roll. In my case, even that wasn't enough to help. "Clash of the Titans" starts out epic, but it ends up being an epic failure.

Just a little bit of constructive feedback—maybe try mentioning the movie title a bit less in your review. You brought up "Clash of the Titans" like twenty times... basically once in every single sentence.

Since I've been called out maybe three or seven dozen times now for being a shallow person who just lives for Michael Bay's kitschy style—hey, since we're all buddies here—I figured I'd do the guy a little plug... you know, be a pal. Anyway, he’s got a new flick. I honestly had no clue he was even directing anything because I just assumed he was busy filming some Transit nonsense or counting cash at a mansion somewhere in Hollywood, but apparently, I was wrong. This time it's not some Transit garbage; it's an actual story about a group of US Army Special Forces trying to pull an American ambassador out of besieged Libya, giving them—as the title suggests—13 Hours to get it done. The movie definitely has the scent and flavor of Bay's previous stuff (the visuals, the camera work—look, if you love it, you love it, and if you don't, just don't watch it...) but it looks like he actually managed to make something gripping, watchable, and tense this time around. Not exactly a shocker, really, because when he steps away from that Transit crap, he can actually whip up a fun movie (like Pain & Gain). Early reactions are more than positive (surprise, surprise) and people are already comparing it to Black Hawk Down—not as a dig, but as praise for having a solid story. Whether it holds up or not, we'll see... The main roles are filled by a solid supporting cast, nothing too mainstream, but we've got James Badge Dale and Toby Stephens.

dustypanther6 said:So, what's the actual definition of a superhero, and why doesn't The Green Hornet count?

Here's the deal—the definition usually hinges on having some kind of superpower or high-tech gadgetry to make up for being just a regular guy (think Batman, Iron Man, or The Rocketeer). Zorro is just a dude in a mask... that makes him a hero, sure, but definitely not a superhero. Those stories aren't even really placed in the superhero genre; they're more adventure flicks. We're talking comic book adaptations versus superhero movies here. The Green Hornet is basically just a poor man's Batman—regular people fighting crime. I guess you could argue he fits because of his car, which is essentially a Batmobile, but the whole vibe has always been more crime noir than superheroics...

cosmiclynx57 said:Man... if I don't throw one of my absolute favorite Superhero movie picks into this poll...

I mean, Flash Gordon isn't even a superhero. Since you basically threw everything and the kitchen sink into this poll—including movies that aren't even based on comics (like The Defendor, Hancock, or Darkman) since they were just made for the screen, or characters that don't even come from comic book worlds (Zorro, The Shadow), and let's not forget Zorro and The Green Hornet aren't actually superheroes either... plus you somehow managed to slip in two Dylan Dog, Mystery Man, and two Swamp Thing entries... honestly, one Flash doesn't seem like much of a stretch for the list...

Hey, calling on the moderators here—any chance we can get him added to the poll?

Nah. Not happening. It's already way too long as it is.

Joshua Kern said:Are you actually being serious right now?😲

Why not? It’s a tighter movie, I guess... the only issue was they didn't have a massive budget to play with. Honestly, the fact that Soarkin wrote it, Boyle directed, and Michael Fassbender starred doesn't mean much to me if the plot fails to actually pull me into the lead character's world. The only part that actually held my interest was that verbal showdown with Steve Wozniak—but even then, the pacing felt off because there was zero context. Like, nobody explained why he was being so incredibly stubborn about not acknowledging anyone else, or why he'd go from defending Steve Wozniak one second to absolutely tearing him apart the next like he was at a firing range...
Thoughts on the 2015 Steve Jobs movie? in Movies ·
Two hours of pure filler. I totally get what they were aiming for—trying to peel back the layers and show the actual human being behind the legend—but man, they picked a terrible way to go about it. The whole thing basically boils over into just five people, four of whom carry the weight while one acts as a breather (Steve Wozniak). It’s just three rounds, spaced out by years, centered around three major product launches. And then, after all that buildup, the ballads don't even lead to anything meaningful. Like, why was Steve Jobs such a massive jerk to everyone? Why was he so dogmatic about tech even though he wasn't really the innovator himself? Why did he refuse to acknowledge his daughter, only to crave her presence at that final keynote? All we actually learn about the guy is that he loved losing his cool on people and had a serious streak of vengeance... and that's pretty much it. "That's just how he was," the movie tells us. Honestly, even Ashton Kutcher's take felt more substantial than this...

Well, that's just your take. Which basically puts you in that same crowd of fake film snobs who think their opinion is some kind of divine truth... it isn't. It really isn't. Everyone watches movies differently, plain and simple.

You asked for movie recs, and you got them. Look, if your taste is set at some impossibly high level, that’s your business, not mine—but I draw the line at you calling people trolls for no reason. It's kind of like me telling you that you're trolling on purpose just because you can't find anything you actually like...🤷

Amanda Garcia57 said:Not really. It’s weird to me how people can just obsess over things that have zero basis in reality—to actually admire them and even put them on a pedestal as some kind of life ideal. Some people crave (brutal) reality, while others just want fantasy. Strange. I don't get it.

"Zero basis in reality"? From what I gather, all those chemical processes for producing water and oxygen are right there, along with the creation of arable soil... so, technically... I haven't seen the movie, but if it sticks to the book, the only Sci-Fi element is the whole setting being on Mars and having a ship capable of such a long haul. Fifty years ago, Star Trek was pure Sci-Fi in every sense, yet today we've got high-speed elevators, interactive home computers, smartphones, and tablets... it happens. But since you brought it up, what about Fifty Shades of Grey? That sounds more like your speed, I guess, since it's "realistic"? Kinky sex is a thing in the real world, and there are plenty of people out there who go for it. Not to mention it's (again) just the fantasies of some immature girl who, totally obsessed with that Twilight bullshit, cooked up her own version of what she calls "real"...

Amanda Garcia57 said:It’s all pretty worrying...

I mean, it hasn't even been specified what kind of SF movies we're talking about here. The genre itself stays pretty much the same—it’s just that right now, everyone is obsessed with superheroes. Honestly, I wouldn't call it worrying at all. Back in the 90s, we had Scream, which triggered this massive wave of cheap knockoffs, and nobody was freaking out that kids were going to start attacking people with kitchen knives or something... Superheroes are just where the money is right now, so that's why they're everywhere, but there's still plenty of other stuff out there (like Star Trek, Interstellar, The Martian...) so it's really no different than it was back in the 90s...
