My Top 5 Sci-Fi Movies in Movies ·
5) Time Machine (that one from the sixties)

I absolutely loved this movie when I was a kid, and honestly, I still love it now. I still can't believe I actually recorded over the tape it was on with some stupid nonsense once.

4) Plan 9 from Outer Space (which I think was also from the sixties 🤔 )

It's basically 'Ed Wood at its finest.' 🙏 You've got aliens resurrecting the dead just so they can take over Earth.

So, you've got aliens and zombies in the same movie. I mean, what more could you want?

3) The Last Starfighter (from the 80s)

This movie is just pure genius. It's set in America where arcade games are actually based on a real interstellar conflict, and if you beat the game, you get recruited to fight in space.

Back then, my whole group of friends would play any space shooter we could find, obsessively hoping we'd get scouted by some aliens to join the fight.

Anyway, twelve years have passed and we don't try that hard anymore... but hey, you never know.

2) Barbarella (around 1970, I guess)

Okay... so you have Jane Fonda in this incredibly tight space suit wandering around different planets looking for... something. Everyone is totally trippy, and there are even scenes involving some weird sexual torture devices...😕

If that's not good entertainment, you tell me what is, because I bloody well don't know. 😁

1) Forbidden Planet (1956)

I actually know the exact year for this one because I watched Solaris a few months ago and decided to revisit this after a long time.

Two words: Anne Francis. 🙏

Look, these Dubbing Studios guys actually killed it.

I'll admit, I was pretty skeptical at first—especially after listening to some of the garbage we've been getting lately—but they really nailed the work on The Incredibles.

It’s not quite as good as the original version, obviously, but they definitely have 👍

Alright, fine... but maybe you could actually give me a few examples of films that *are* "in sync"?
Steven Kelly152 said:Look, if you ask me, I’d say you’re just being discriminatory when it comes to holidays like Christmas or Easter Monday. I mean, those are religious holidays, so they shouldn't really matter to you; it would be more reasonable to just work instead of taking the day off. You don't seem to complain about discrimination then. 🙏

That isn't even true... people would work, they just aren't given the chance. 😉
Angela Kern69 >honestly, I find it hilarious when my kids start whining because they can't watch their favorite late-night talk show on TV due to some national day of mourning.

I mean, I don't know how anyone actually sits through LNH. 😂
Well, look at that... another porn star. 👍

Or maybe they’ll just start singing in this one and then try to claim the whole thing is some big musical later on. 😁
Hannah Davis18 said:People in this country just love to overreact about everything.🙄
I bet every single news network in America will be broadcasting the funeral live.

You really think they won't? 😉
Undertow> I was actually thinking about watching... hmm... Hitler!

🤣

I almost choked on my candy laughing at that. 😂

@Sandra King86<=

I'm with you there. 👍 Except for the part where all that cash just goes toward training priests. 🙄 I mean, the Church probably has more money than Bill Gates at this point. :$$$:

Maybe if they donated the money to an orphanage or just general charities instead? Yeah, that would be a pretty great idea. (though I guess the AMC Theatres would lose out on profit again 😁)

Man, I don't know... maybe it's just me, but there's just something about Genesis Climber Mospeada.

I honestly can't think of anything. Maybe I just don't remember, but yeah, nothing comes to mind. 😵

Eric Jackson43 said:But seriously, you really shouldn't have let that slip. I was actually hoping the wise guy would just figure it out on his own.

🙂

My bad.

Whatever, you’ll just catch him the next time around. 😁

Eric Jackson43 said:Are you actually sure it's even an anime? Because here I can't find a single Japanese person involved. Unless, in your opinion, Gregory Snegoff and Robert V. Barron are somehow Japanese. 🙂

Look... Robotech definitely counts as anime. Here’s how it actually works.

American companies bought up the rights to Macross, Southern Cross, and some other series I can't quite recall right now. 😉

Then they basically chopped up pieces from three different shows, stitched them together into one long series, slapped their own English dub on it, and completely rewrote the plot.

So, if you want the truth, Robotech is really just Macross, Southern Cross, and that third one mashed into one giant show. 😁

Ecchi is actually pretty decent—or if I want to be more precise, there are some genuinely good Ecchi series out there. Plus, a huge chunk of "other" shows contain varying degrees of Ecchi elements, whether it's baked into the humor or just straight-up fan service. At the end of the day, sex sells. 😁 😉

What I really dig is the kind of Ecchi humor you see in Dragon Ball (specifically the first one) or Golden Boy. 🙏 Or take Ebich – The Housekeeping Hamster, where half of... okay, the whole 😁... series is pure Ecchi, but it's used in fairly realistic, maybe even somewhat smart situations. Even then, there's always that thin line between actual good humor 👍 and just being plain tasteless. 👎

Honestly, Dragon Ball Z is just a prime example of mediocre animation and character design. The quality is all over the place from one scene to the next... there are moments where it looks like they barely finished the job, or where half the frame isn't even colored in properly. 😂

And don't even get me started on the fact that DBZ didn't even start airing until the late 80s—'89, if we're being specific—which was already a time when plenty of high-quality anime were already out there.

If you actually want to see decent art, check out:

Cowboy Bebop, Angel Sanctuary, FLCL, Golden Boy, Macross, Read or Die, Rurouni Kenshin, Gunbuster, Escaflowne, Ranma ½, Urusei Yatsura, and other big titles.

Some of those actually predate DBZ by quite a bit. 😉

I mean, it’s easily one of the most massive franchises out there right now, with what feels like a billion seasons—Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, GT...

Yeah, well, Pokémon was huge too. I honestly don't get how DBZ reached this level of obsession... maybe it's just built on the same kind of endless drama you see in those Mexican soap operas.

I think the original series is actually great, truly 🙏, but DBZ? It’s just a total slog for me.

I actually just sat through three episodes back-to-back—they felt like one cohesive unit—only for the third one to descend into such absolute absurdity that the whole thing stops making any sense at all... oh my God.

Carol Jackson45> I know the anime fanatics are going to eat me alive for this, but Mononoke and New York City are a class below for me.

Look, MH isn't even one of my absolute favorites despite being by Hayao Miyazaki, but you're telling me Metro isn't good??? 😲 🙂 😁 It still holds the #1 spot for me today. And honestly, the manga is worth a read.

Noah Watson4> Well, you... personally, I think Akira is total garbage!

The issue with Akira is this: they cram 6 freaking volumes of manga 😲 into a 2-hour movie… seriously. 🙄 That seems to be a super common problem with anime films. You watch it and it just doesn't land right, and then someone comes up to you and says, “Well, yeah, you need to read the manga…”

Akira really is a bit too sprawling to be condensed into such a "short" film, but I still think Katsuhiro Otomo did a solid job. He managed to convey some things well from the manga, and he was able to "cover" other parts effectively so the story still feels relatively coherent. In any case, it leaves enough room for the viewer to actually use their brain and try to figure some things out for themselves, rather than having everything spoon-fed to them on a silver platter 😉 and I appreciate that about Akira 👍 although, I'll admit, it's not at the top of my list of favorite movies.

As for the animation and technical aspects, I don't even want to get into it because it's simply perfect. 🙏 It's worth spending 2 hours of your time just to watch Akira for the animation alone.

Otherwise, if we ignore the animation, the movie is a bit tough to sit through, especially if you aren't into cyberpunk, post-apocalyptic vibes, or the whole setting of the film. It's not exactly something you'd put on a Sunday afternoon to relax after lunch or something you'd watch with a group of friends. (IMHO)

Anyway, I know it sounds stupid, and I hate saying it myself, but seriously—try to find and read the manga.

Arthur Johnson50> Just like how "manga" is a manga. It's the name of a film studio, not some damn synonym for "cute cartoons."

😕

manga = Japanese comic (any kind of comic in Japan)

Arthur Johnson50> The third title is, and happens to be the author's favorite, Toryjamin's "Dragon Ball".

The first series is great. But Dragon Ball Z, which I'm watching right now, is a disaster…. my god… it's some of the worst stuff I've ever seen. And I've watched trash like Alien, Ninja Resurrection, and Eatman 98, yet DBZ ranks just slightly above those.😲

Yeah, definitely....😁

There have actually been threads about them before... things like Nausicaa and stuff.

Honestly, I’ve wanted to put together one really solid, comprehensive thread about anime for a long time now, but I just don't have the time, the energy, or the coordination with Kozz to actually get it done... and I guess I just haven't found the time.

Serge Cosmi said:though some people still get pissed off when they hear that Canadian skiing is better than American skiing

If we're talking about this specific subject and that article from The Wall Street Journal, I have to admit the piece was totally misinterpreted over here.

But there’s already a thread about that, and Robbie isn't the one who wrote it, so he's not really the authority on how things actually went down...👍

Anyway, yeah, Canadian skiing is definitely stronger than American skiing.

Bradley Rivera63> A few things are interesting here. Just look at how much stronger the German women's skiing is compared to the men's.
.
<cut>
.
So, looking at the all-time rankings, we might actually see some shifts in the national standings as early as this year.

I think the legend made a pretty solid point earlier. 👍

Anyway, just stating the obvious here.
Bradley Rivera63> And of course, in a few years, we expect the US to break into the top ten. Is that possible?

😕

Based on what, though? Are we just banking on the incredible results from Janica and Ivica?

To actually overtake Canada, we’d need about 5,000 points, and you have to remember that Canada is a legitimate powerhouse that pulls in plenty of points every single season.

Plus, passing them would mean we’d also have to jump ahead of Finland, who currently has us beat by about 2,500 points—and honestly, they probably have a better shot at the top 10 than we do right now.

I mean, I guess you should never say never, but that kind of optimism feels a bit over the top if you ask me. Even if we did somehow crack the top 10, it wouldn't last long because Canada and Finland would be breathing down our necks constantly.

I suppose it's going to take many more years before we can talk about real strength in American skiing. All the success we've seen so far has been strictly down to individuals—specifically Janica and Ivica bringing in most of the points. The US national team is definitely moving in the right direction toward becoming a consistent force in world skiing, but it's going to take a lot more years and even more grueling training to get there. We shouldn't go expecting miracles; maybe we should just be happy with what's been achieved and what's being planned for the future. One step at a time.

Even Canada isn't holding onto that 9th spot for nothing, especially with such a massive lead over Canada. In my opinion, this ranking is probably the most realistic way to see which nations are actually strong or weak, and which countries truly dominate the sport.

I don't know, I mean, all credit to Tim Curry for his performance with the sticks and weights, but I still didn't think the movie was that great.

Well, look... at this point, we’re already deep into the territory of pure subjectivity.

Honestly, I can’t even put my finger on exactly what makes this movie work for me. There’s just something about it—an intangible vibe, I guess. Maybe someone else will see it the same way I do, or maybe it just won't be anyone else's cup of tea. It is what it is... tastes differ, I suppose. *shrugs*

At the end of the day, I can't really find any "objective" arguments to support this movie, other than the music. 😉
It’s pretty interesting, actually. Even most of the hardcore fans and cult followers basically admit that it isn't exactly a masterpiece of filmmaking.

I guess they all just latched onto that specific energy the movie releases when it hits a packed theater—where everyone’s wearing corsets and fishnets and singing "unknown do the time warp again."

Yeah, nice one, Richard Hernandez13... you hit the nail right on the head. 👍 Look, I wouldn't say this "energy" is enough to make me want to go out and join some crazy synchronized dance troupe in workout gear, but hey, if it means I get to do the Time Warp, then fine—count me in. 👍

I guess some people just get it, while others totally don't. Honestly, there's probably folks out there who find the whole thing so repulsive they wouldn't even be able to sit through the opening credits... let alone whatever comes after that. 😁

One thing is for sure. After watching RHPS, I definitely see Susan Sarandon in a whole different light. Also, I can't help but crack a smile whenever Barry Bostwick shows up in an episode of Spin City.

The only thing that’s actually changed for me regarding Tim Curry is that my opinion has shifted for the better. I mean, it wasn't exactly bad before, but things have definitely improved. 😉 Hands down... the best... supporting actor... EVER. 🙏 😁

GNN>Why on earth do people even watch it then?

I guess it’s because it’s got a certain vibe, the music is actually solid, and you can always make fun of the movie while still admitting it isn't total garbage.
GNN>I don't see any other redeeming qualities in the film.

Well, there's the music... which is really good, I might even go that far.

Seriously, the soundtrack is one of those things you could actually listen to all day, whether you're driving, hanging out, or just browsing the unknown and playing it through Winamp. I can't say that about most other musicals, honestly.

It feels more like a musical made for the masses rather than just a tiny niche of people who worship Andrew Lloyd Webber.
GNN>I might believe that for other people, but I've heard descriptions from at least three different places (this thread being one) about theater screenings where people spend the whole time heckling the movie and making fun of it.

Sorry, but there's a huge difference between a loud theater screening and watching the movie by yourself at home.

At the end of the day, the mere fact that you can sit down and watch this movie on a random night when you have nothing better to do—without someone sitting next to you making jokes—suggests it has some level of merit... or, I don't want to overstate it 😬...it has that "something" that makes people like it.
