The concept of a nation didn't even exist back then. Besides, nationalization is a perfectly legitimate move when you look at history.
I mean, look at how people end up scattered everywhere—you’ve got Americans living in parts of Mexico, Canada, or even overseas. It happens. Historically, various kings used to settle folks from places like New York or Chicago in new territories, giving them land concessions and essentially running their own little colonies. Back then, nobody even knew these groups existed. 🙂
Oh well, that's just how the world turns. If the expansionists had actually managed to push all the way to the Mississippi, those cities would be purely theirs today. They would have absolutely loathed us, probably fueled by generations of resentment. But since we held those borders, except for maybe two small counties that were added later anyway, those areas stayed firmly American.
