Off-topic here, but this is such a great discussion. 👍 Personally, I notice these cycles in myself—periods where things I read on here hit me harder than usual, or maybe not at all—and when I feel like it’s starting to mess with my head, I just step back. And honestly? When I see someone who is constantly, obsessively present on a forum like this, it really makes me wonder about the actual quality of their life and their real-world relationships.
edit: I also think a forum can act as a sort of substitute for something else... a placeholder for reality. For instance, if I’m on here bragging about my perfect marriage, my amazing relationship, my incredible cooking skills, or how much of a stellar parent I am (okay, I'm exaggerating 🙂 ), it somehow tricks me into feeling like a better spouse, partner, cook, or parent in real life. Which, obviously, isn't true. 😬 It feels a bit like those people who decide they're finally going on a strict diet, but then immediately go out and eat a whole pizza to "reward" themselves for making such a good decision. 😁
I'm right there with you. Some discussions just hit too close to home, they get under my skin, and I have to bail. There are days when this whole place feels completely uninspiring, just mindless and boring.
Addiction is what this is: you see someone drop 250 posts in two days, you check the stats and realize they're posting every five to seven minutes—sometimes more—and they do it all day, for days on end. At that point, it's crystal clear we're looking at addiction because that person clearly HAS zero time for anything else in life besides this forum. Just imagine how long that person stays silent, barely using their actual voice to communicate. They eat on the fly, staring at a screen, sitting, lying down...
It's a damn addiction, and from what I know about addictions, they are freaking hard to kick.
And that second part? 🤣
Little ways to lick your fingers and pretend it was worth it 😁 Basically compensating for dissatisfaction, right? As if bragging on a forum is magically going to fix whatever it is they're unhappy about.
I'm just here to say—and I mean this with total conviction—that things need to move quicker if we're actually going to see any real progress around here. It’s all about that momentum, you know? Like, why drag things out when you can just hit the gas and get it done? Some people love to overcomplicate the process—they get bogged down in the weeds, staring at spreadsheets like they're some kind of sacred text—but honestly, if you aren't pushing for speed, you're basically standing still. It’s simple math, really. Faster execution leads to faster results, and let's be real, nobody has time to wait around for perfection when "good enough and fast" wins the race almost every single time. Just my two cents, though. Take it or leave it. kaže: I’ve been hanging out on these forums since way back in 2002... honestly, if that’s a bad thing, I think I might actually drop dead right here—which, let's be real, would probably be a pretty funny way to go.😁 I’ve met so many awesome people on here—and honestly, on my main forum too—so I haven't really had any bad experiences at all... plus, instead of just wasting hours scrolling through mindless junk or sitting around at a Starbucks, I feel like I'm actually being somewhat productive with my time for once.
I mean, yeah—forums themselves are kind of a mixed bag, you know? They can be great, they can be trash, it’s all pretty ambivalent depending on where you land. But addiction... man, that's a whole different animal entirely. That's a completely different conversation.
Addiction, though? 😬 So, what if we actually drew a line between just having a habit and being straight-up addicted? Alright, let me hear what you brainiacs have to say about this one 😁
If we just look at the symptoms, they're pretty clear: Overusing forums to the point where it messes with your mental health, your physical well-being, your job performance, and your relationships with people.
We're talking muscle atrophy from sitting too much, a junk food diet leading to weight gain, wrecked sleep schedules that leave you exhausted, and strained social ties that can mess up parenting or even lead to divorce.
What do you guys think? Anyone have experience with this—either personally or seeing it happen to someone close to them?
For me, the forum is usually a nice place to hang out, and I think I use it in moderation. But man, I’ve had those rough patches in life where I definitely overdid it—I'd spend way too much time online, and afterward, I’d just feel nauseous, dissatisfied, and honestly, kind of depressed.
It makes me wonder... are the users who are posting from sunrise to late at night, every single day, for years on end, actually living in a constant state of emotional crisis?
In my book, any kind of addiction is basically just an escape from uncomfortable emotions. So, being addicted to a forum would be its own version of running away from reality—avoiding facing the tough stuff and using the internet as a massive distraction from "the things I actually need to get done."
Let me know your thoughts and ideas... thanks so much 🙂
Scott Long71 said:The whole point is to take stuff that’s usually considered "bad behavior" on the site and spin it into an allowed verbal duel—you know, with its own set of rules. It happens all the time where someone starts a fight, but the other person won't even bite back because they know it violates the rules, so they just end up sitting there taking the mental hits.
It's kind of like how street brawls eventually evolved into "noble sports" like boxing, or how insults used to be handled through formal duels.
Since this site is basically built on dialogue, it actually makes sense—it's natural—to have duels. But, in our desperate rush to stay politically correct and "civilized," we’ve basically killed off the art of the argument, or at least the harder-hitting debates. Well, yesterday proved that once you loosen the reins a little, there’s plenty of reason for duels and duelists to exist.
We aren't trying to open the floodgates for mindless trolling; we want to allow for these intense, free-flowing discussions within a clearly defined framework.
Honestly, I see some incredible debating talent right here. 🙂 It’s just silly to hand out bans and warnings to people who are actually good at this—they could be stars if they weren't being penalized for their talent. 🙂
Alright, let's go! This is a killer idea. But look, if we're turning street fights into noble sports, we need a total mindset shift—moving from just throwing mud to actual skilled debating. A boxing ring has a ref, and duels have strict rules and seconds standing by. We should probably have that too.
As for those typical internet arguments, there’s another reason why one side always gets crushed—it’s because they realize the person attacking them is just some random jerk jumping at them, totally unworthy of their time or energy. Once you realize it's just nonsense, it becomes pure gibberish. Fighting just for the sake of fighting? That gets boring fast for anyone watching.
So, what do we call it? The skill of polemics, debating... how would we even define it?
Daniel Kelly57 said:Look, I’m just stating facts. Some people can talk to anyone, and some people just can't. I get that, but there's a difference between ignoring someone and constantly reporting their posts. Besides, what's wrong with the fact that you and I just don't get along? It's pretty obvious. I can't stand people who try to threaten me through private messages, claiming they'll get me kicked off the forum. Can you explain why you suddenly showed up in the WhatsApp chat? Did you come here to fix things or shut them down? If I'm reading this right, you're a happily married woman who suddenly decided to start posting on lonely hearts forums out of nowhere? And now, suddenly, chats are getting closed, just like that one chat on the ŽuD where you were posting too. So, think about it—who's actually more to blame, people like me or you? A lynch mob atmosphere? 🤣 Honestly, you have to be something else special to even claim that. There's a huge difference between me refusing to let certain people act like they're more important than me or any other regular user who isn't overthinking life like they are. I also wonder why the moderators won't just say who it was and exactly why there were so many reports. And I'd love for them to show where there was ever an issue with me in that other lively chat. The fact that you can't stand me and want me gone from the forum is funny to me, but I don't get how the moderators allow it and then force the rest of us to deal with it. 🤔
Both ignoring someone and reporting posts are perfectly legitimate options on this forum. Where I choose to hang out and who I talk to isn't your business. This whole thing you're spinning about private messages is just a malicious narrative you've made up. In my message, I specifically asked you to stop jumping down my throat, which you continued to do without a second thought. Anyway, sharing private messages is against the rules. The ŽuD chat didn't close because of my writing; the rest of it was just malicious instigation that I have no interest in discussing. Whether you choose to tolerate certain things or not is, quite frankly, none of my concern. If you want to obsess or talk trash through PMs, you can do that without needing a chat room. Everything else you're saying is just redundant nonsense that I'm not going to waste my time on.
Thanks, Joshua, for showing everyone exactly how you deal with people who just don't get it—while simultaneously accusing everyone else of being unable to talk to anyone with a different opinion. Honestly, man, you’ve let way too much slide during your time on this forum... fighting and throwing insults seem to be practically hardwired into your keyboard at this point. And no, I’m not saying you’re the sole reason everything is shutting down, but did you help create that whole mob mentality on both WhatsApp chats? Yeah, you definitely did.
mistyhound94 said:I'm a Virgo, so I guess nitpicking is practically part of my job description. 😬 But hey, at the end of the day, we're just sharing opinions, so it's fine. 🙂
I also hope everyone calms down so we can stop the bickering and instigating, though I always say the US is a powder keg; I just hope nobody decides to light the fuse right now. People should hang out with those they actually like, not those they don't. People should be laughing, grabbing drinks, and just enjoying life—the world isn't meant for constant conflict, it's meant for enjoying time with others. If more people were relaxed and less negative, the US would actually be a nice place to hang out.
What you’re saying sounds like a total dream. Honestly, the only time I ever felt that kind of vibe was back in the old Zud WhatsApp.
The real issue with any chat is that you always get those bottom-feeders—those guys who think they’ve reached the peak of their existence not by having a funny debate, but by being absolute jerks, insulting people, and trolling anyone who happens to get under their skin for whatever reason. I don't hang out in the US chat systematically enough to tell you what it was like before, though.
Look, mistyhound94, I don't agree with everything you said—don't get me wrong—but I totally agree that it’s just specific individuals who are responsible for ramping up the tension and then acting surprised when things boil over into actual conflicts. Sadly, those few people drag everyone else down with them until the whole WhatsApp chat turns into a complete mess.
I was actually participating in a heated debate on Reddit recently, and honestly, there wasn't a single thread where people weren't being rude or making snarky comments about my posts. And we're talking for days on end here. 😳
btw, I hope it's crystal clear that I definitely wasn't calling you a troublemaker—far from it, I actually really value the stuff you post.
There are other things you've mentioned that I don't see eye-to-eye on, but I don't see much point in nitpicking every little detail.
It seems like the 40+ group has become this massive, catch-all chat now, and I just hope that certain people will finally chill out and start communicating like normal human beings—without all the rudeness and arrogance that just kills any chance of having a decent, civilized conversation.
Oh, and one more thing—claiming the mods were just being salty when they shut down the WhatsApp
Look, I’m not exactly out here defending the moderators, but man... if you actually want to get something done—and if you need those mods to help make it happen—how clueless do you have to be to think that by throwing insults you're going to achieve anything other than the exact opposite? 🤦
Mickey, I’ve been wondering—what if the group of folks who actually want to have a normal conversation on WhatsApp, you know, the ones who mostly follow the rules, just put together some kind of warning system for those trolls? Because at the end of the day, their uncontrolled "wild west" behavior is exactly what gets the whole chat shut down in the first place. Do you guys actually step in when people start hurling insults at other members, or when they start mocking the people who don't even hang out in your specific chat? Do the moderators react to the bullying? Or even to people calling for a "raid" to go mess with people over on another WhatsApp group?
Because honestly, those are the exact things that lead to a chat getting nuked. for That comment of yours about the other chat is seriously messed up—it’s like, "Oh great, now this bunch of obnoxious kids is going to migrate to the next chat to keep posting nonsense and making fun of the regulars there." Don't you realize that the second they move, that chat will get shut down too? It’ll be for the exact same reasons this one is.
On Zud, a while back, a chat got closed because the moderator basically said "no thanks" to babysitting a massive pile of stupidity and constant provocations. And hey, that’s her right! That’s her legitimate prerogative!
And interestingly enough, the biggest troublemakers in that chat were a few of the USovacs.
Alright, I figured I’d throw my two cents into this whole mess too. Just a heads-up though—don't even bother addressing me, Grace Sanders24 or Angela Cruz52, because I’ve got them both on ignore and I really have zero interest in sinking down to their level of... whatever that is. Basically, this thread turned into a glorified group chat almost immediately after it went live. And look, anyone who’s been around the IRS forums knows we had that one specific chat thread for cheaters once, and let me tell you, it was a total disaster. It constantly, and I mean *constantly*, attracted all sorts of weirdos and creeps, and eventually, it became pretty obvious that a thread like that just doesn't belong on a forum like this. On top of that, Angela Cruz52 was being incredibly rude to anyone who didn't agree with her—basically trying to kick people out of the thread and acting like some spoiled brat, demanding that only the "supporters" of her massive ego be allowed to post. But hey, even that wasn't enough for them. The thread would go dead for like two weeks, and then suddenly, out of nowhere, there’d be a post from Bell, Grace Sanders24, or whoever else, just going back to their usual routine of insulting the "evil trolls" living on the forum. And why? All because some of us weren't exactly thrilled that Bell was calling her long-distance crush a "hag." They were even dropping links to these stupid YouTube videos that had absolutely nothing to do with what we were talking about. As things kept moving along, the whole thread just got more and more obnoxious, filled with people shouting at imaginary enemies. Plus, the spam, the off-topic nonsense, and the trolling... it never seemed to end. If you want proof, just look at how Angela Cruz52 and Grace Sanders24 are behaving in the current active threads over at the IRS—they’re still doing the same thing: veering off-topic, insulting imaginary haters, and constantly pointing fingers at the moderators and the site admin. Personally, I’m all for a good debate or some heated discussion, but what these two are doing isn't that—it’s just straight-up rude, arrogant trolling and pure hate. In my opinion, this thread needs to stay locked because, honestly, it looks like they're just going to keep doing the exact same thing over and over. I really hope the mods take a look at the history here and give them a formal warning for their behavior and for breaking the forum rules.
Carl Fisher7 said:Look, Sean Cruz already dropped those links above—so much for my "making stuff up" or lying, right? And it wasn't just me she was coming at. Someone who actually left the chat because of how nimbleowl6 was acting actually slid into my DMs to tell me about all the other users she’s driven away with that attitude. I’m obviously not bothered by her take—to put it politely, wrapped in some nice packaging—but to be blunt, screw her opinion and her habit of selling smoke and mirrors disguised as high-level jargon. She just throws around big words because she knows most people here will be too impressed by the vocabulary to actually challenge her logic. Honestly, I'll just stick to common sense, whatever brain cells I have left, and actual reasoning.
Alright, if you don't give a damn about my posts, then why do you keep bringing me up? 😕 Since when did this whole thread become about me? 😲
boldwalker12 said:The unknown doesn't need to brighten up—it’s never going to change. Like the user above pointed out, you can't just come over from an adult site and expect to mess around on the unknown while trying to demonize the mods for not letting you. The unknown deals with some pretty heavy stuff—it's always been the most intense corner of the romance subreddits, the place where people go when they actually need a shoulder to lean on. And look, if a core group of regulars forms every few years, there's kind of an unwritten rule that this crew should stick to the designated chat rooms to joke around, instead of demanding the freedom to troll threads where someone is genuinely looking for support or comfort. People should be allowed to argue or bicker a bit—that's not a sin or anything.
I'm totally with you on that. But don't you think that because the sub is so serious, the moderators should probably be more sensitive with how they comment?
My complaint is strictly about that one part. As a regular user of the unknown, I just don't get why I have to deal with the mockery and the total lack of substance from one particular moderator.
That’s honestly where my question about the moderator code of conduct comes from—and so far, nobody has given me an answer.
Emily Patel70 said:boldwalker12 was actually being pretty great—she managed to pull out some of the funniest posts you guys have ever written.
Why all this transparent attempt at being subtle? It's blindingly obvious which moderator we're talking about. Is it really that hard to just say it?
Look, I don't see anything wrong with what I wrote. nimbleowl6 and her little circle decided to have a laugh over the divorce thread—you know, that specific sub-forum where people usually come looking for actual advice during the worst moments of their lives.
And they, apparently, thought it would be hilarious to poke fun at people going through a rastava.
Honestly, it’s kind of sad that I have to tell people who are way older than me that making light of a topic like that is a bad move, but I stand by it. You guys went way too far in every sense, and I was just stepping in to point that out and clear away some of the pretty nasty—and honestly, not even funny—posts. Next time, I’ll just hand out warnings if that makes you feel better.
And please, let's not get childish. Now everyone who hangs out in the same chat rooms as nimbleowl6 is going to swarm in here acting shocked that we're all on the same page and sharing the same opinion. I can already see which forum regulars are going to "accidentally" wander in.
I’m always open to criticism, but I do take into account the track record of certain users offering it, along with their history of past blowups.
Best regards,
Whoa, okay, why the tone? Are you feeling personally attacked because you don't like how I talk to the users?
I'm actually glad boldwalker12 stepped in, because she’s actually capable of handling things with a decent amount of tact. She isn't calling anyone names, she isn't making comments like "oh, now the nimbleowl6 clique will gather," stuff like that. What actually happened right here, right now, is that your little clique gathered. And honestly, this post alone perfectly demonstrates your intolerance toward the users here and your total lack of basic decency.
It doesn't look like you're ready for any feedback, actually—it seems like this just pissed you off and you've got a personal issue with me, which means you aren't acting professionally.
Your "tact" isn't just noticeable on that controversial thread, either. Check this out:
You didn't even bother changing your color when you switched over to moderator mode. People who don't realize you're a mod—the new folks on the site—are going to think it's totally normal practice to suggest someone go deal with their frustrations elsewhere.
Do I really need to spell out what would happen if I, or any other regular user, had written something like that?
I would have gotten hit with an insulting comment and a warning from you, straight up.
And yeah—personally, I'd much rather you just handed out warnings. I'm not saying I won't call you out if I think you've crossed a line, but I'd definitely prefer that over reading you "messing around" with the users on this forum.
I’m with you on that. A real, productive conversation needs a bit of laughter, maybe some light teasing, and—figuratively speaking, obviously—a little bit of slamming the table now and then.
It’s tough to have a decent debate with a true enthusiast if you’re forced to clutch an encyclopedia under one arm while trying to juggle a knife and fork just to cut into a juicy steak. 😁
Look, rules have to exist. And they need to be clearly defined. Sure, they depend on the moderator’s discretion, but honestly, I’m less concerned about that than I am about that condescending, arrogant, and just plain obnoxious tone some moderators use when they try to police a thread.
It’s not even that I think there’s any actual malice behind it. To me, it feels more like "forum oral tradition"—just a piece of local folklore. Some of the veteran moderators set this kind of vibe, and then the newer ones just pick up the habit. Some mods manage to wrap their rudeness in a layer of wit—more or less successfully—while others are just hopeless at it. When that happens, it ends up feeling like they’re just being insulting and patronizing for the sake of it.
But... but that’s why we have rules. Codes of conduct. Standard procedures. Rhetorical guidelines. Actual, established rules of engagement!
Honestly, I’d love to see a bit more transparency from the administration when it comes to how they actually run the ZuD.
If you want a gold standard for what a mod team should look like—I mean, seriously—just look at the crew over at the Psychology department. Look, I get it, not everyone is going to be on my wavelength here, but those mods have this level of emotional intelligence that’s hard to find. They actually have some heart and rarely ever go out of their way to be rude or condescending to the users.
