Well, I’ve gone and made quite the mess of things!
Basically, through a bit of a blunder on my part, I ended up installing two separate versions of Windows XP SP3 onto the exact same partition.
The big question—which I'm sure you can all guess—is whether there is any way to strip one of those Windows installations away without having to go through the whole ordeal of a complete reinstall or formatting the entire partition.
Now, look, it isn't that I'm incapable of just wiping everything and starting from scratch—I certainly could—but I have a fair amount of software already installed, and I would dearly love to avoid the headache of setting every single program up all over again!

-Windows 7

Just to clarify—I used to have two operating systems installed, Windows 8 and Windows 7, but I uninstalled Windows 8, so now I should only be running Windows 7.

Well, now that you mention uninstalling Windows 8, that's a huge red flag to me! It really makes me wonder... how exactly did you go about removing that Windows installation? Did you actually format the partition where it was living, or did you try some other way to get rid of it?
It sounds like you might not have wiped it out properly—which means the system might still think that Windows 8 admin account is the primary one!
YouTube has no sound—any fixes? in IT Support ·
He’s claiming it isn't an issue—apparently, the audio is working perfectly fine on all the videos! But, if we're looking at more recent uploads, isn't it possible that the sound was actually muted by a moderator to stay compliant with copyright laws?

I mean, at the end of the day—whether you’re using Corel or even just basic MS Paint—why on earth would Adobe Photoshop even matter here?
ABC Letters in Software ·
dustydrifter14 said:Exactly—you could use any font you wanted in Adobe Photoshop.
The thing is, these specific dictionaries come with their own built-in fonts that you just can't mess with.
It didn't matter if I was typing in Arial, Tahoma, Times New Roman, or whatever else I felt like using!

I haven't touched Adobe Photoshop in ages, so my memory is a bit fuzzy—but if I recall correctly, I never ran into that issue.
Does this happen with other software too? Like, would you see the same thing in Microsoft Office programs like Word or Excel, or is it strictly an Adobe Photoshop thing?
ABC Letters in Software ·
Does this happen with pretty much any font you throw at it, or is it just being picky with specific ones? You see, when you install suites like Adobe Photoshop and similar software, they often bundle their own proprietary fonts—but the catch is, those specific fonts frequently lack support for certain American characters. To fix that, you’d essentially have to take those files into a dedicated font editor—something like FontCreator or a similar tool—to manually patch them in. If you do that, the issues should theoretically vanish!

Now, if we're talking about a situation where *every* single font is acting up? Well, then we're looking at a different beast entirely. That would suggest that Windows wasn't installed quite right, or perhaps the language and regional settings haven't been configured properly for American English.
YouTube issues - anyone else having trouble? in IT Support ·
I’m going to go out on a limb here and guess we’re talking about Chrome—because let’s be honest, when it comes to Flash, Chrome is an absolute train wreck.
It’s just like what Daniel Evans142 was saying—the real headaches are happening over on YouTube; we’re seeing issues with Flash games and general streaming stability too. Everything runs flawlessly in Mozilla, truly, everything works perfectly there, but Chrome? Honestly, it’s a total disaster.

Christian Ross2 said:Just take a quick look at some computer stores online—you'll find exactly what you're hunting for in no time! For instance, here is some DVD 4 x:

See, that link you sent me is actually for rewritable media—basically a DVD-RW—but I'm specifically looking for a standard CD, though honestly, that's beside the point right now. My main concern? Well, I've always suspected that the PlayStation might have trouble reading those rewritable (write/erase) discs, don't you think?

I’m really not sure if this is quite the right corner of the forum to be asking this—is it?
Does anyone actually know how to determine the absolute lowest burn speed for a CD or DVD?
It seems like every single package you pick up at Best Buy or Target just screams about these massive, high-speed ratings.
Why am I even obsessing over this? Well, it’s because I’ve been trying to burn some PlayStation games, and I’m running into a bit of a technical headache. The instructions suggest sticking to a max 4x speed for the best results, but every single disc I buy—whether it's Verbatim or something similar—says it won't go any lower than 8x! It’s incredibly frustrating! Even when I go into my burning software and manually set the speed to 2x or 4x, the drive just ignores me and insists on cranking it up to 8x anyway!
How do I find the artist of a song? in Software ·
Jesse Wilson17 said:How on earth are you supposed to play a song if you don't even know what it is?

By the way—if you’re running an iOS device—just grab Shazam! It's honestly that simple.

It doesn't even have to be an iOS phone! Heck, I remember when this stuff worked on Symbian!

swifttinker40 said:I have quite a few tracks from my MP3-ac collection—mostly stuff from the 50s and 60s—where I honestly haven't a clue who the artists are.
I feel like I've heard somewhere that there are actually programs out there where you just play a song and it identifies both the artist and the title for you.
Does anyone here happen to know anything about how that works?

If you're working on a PC, there's this little utility called Tunatic, and if you're using your phone, Shazam is pretty much the gold standard! Just a heads-up though—neither of them is truly magic; they tend to be way more accurate with international artists than they are with local ones.
Kyle Johnson2 said:You can actually protect a Word document right within Word itself—no need to go hunting for some external encryption software! And honestly, I think the suggestion from our friend above about everyone entering their own piece of the password is actually quite clever, don't you?

- Protecting documents in Word 2003
- Protecting documents in Word 2007

From what I can gather, they’re basically looking to lock a document down like a high-security bank vault set on a timer. You know the type—you lock it up and it stays shut tight until the clock runs out, whether you have the password or not!

coppersailor28 said:Apple is famous for that! If it’s still under warranty, just take it in for service.

When it comes down to cell phones, I won't admit to anything except Apple. I actually own two—one is a legendary 3310 style classic and the other is that 6120 model I mentioned before—and honestly, I couldn't be happier with them.
And another thing—I would never, ever pick a phone based on its camera! Why bother? When you can just grab a $333 decent digital camera that will outperform 90% of the cameras built into mobile phones anyway.
For me, the primary job of a phone is making calls and receiving them, and these two of mine fulfill my needs perfectly!

14 megapixels is really just a fancy way of saying 1400px by 1000px (well, one possible combination of width and height, anyway)!..

Even my old Motorola Razr with its measly 2 mp is capable of hitting a maximum resolution of 1600 x 1200!

shadowlynx102 said:It’s fine if you’re just talking about a handful of files—but honestly, with our mediocre American upload speeds? Trying to "dump to the cloud" a hundred 14 MP photos would take actual hours!

I’d recommend grabbing FastStone Image Resizer or even just the FastStone Photo Viewer.
But here’s a little tip—when you're resizing, don't just jump from 4000 all the way down to 1000 in one go! You'll want to do it in two or three incremental steps to prevent losing too much image quality. It makes such a difference!
For example, let's say your resolution is 4000 x 3500.
First reduction: 3000 x 2500.
Second reduction: 2000 x 1500.
Third reduction: 1600 x 1200... and so on.
Personally, whenever I’m posting stuff to Facebook or my blog, I scale my 16 MP shots down to about 640 x 480. Works like a charm!

P.S. Don't take my specific resolution numbers as gospel—I'm just throwing those out there as an example! You should pick whatever stepping stones make sense for your specific needs.
Issues with browsing and downloading files in IT Support ·
Karen Morgan2 said:I've been dealing with some major browsing issues for a few days now.
Basically, if I start downloading a file, everything else just dies. No surfing, no YouTube, no simultaneous downloads—nothing. It doesn't matter if I'm on the same computer or any other device on my network; it just says there's no connection.
If I get aggressive about it and spam the refresh button on a page, the download will actually fail, but then the websites suddenly start working again.

For context, I'm running an H1. I'm on Windows 8.1 and I've cycled through every browser under the sun (IE, FF, Opera...), but obviously, it’s not a browser issue. For instance, YouTube videos constantly stutter or just freeze right in the middle of playback. It isn't a buffering problem or a speed issue either—I'm getting a steady 1.5 MB/s during downloads—the connection just snaps or whatever.

It's definitely not the hardware; I tested this with two other laptops. And no, it's not spyware, a virus, or anything like that.

I tried plugging directly into the Comcast router via Ethernet, disconnected every other wired and wireless device, messed with all the settings, played with QoS... nothing works.

Any ideas? Should I just call Comcast? Maybe it's something wrong with their configurations at the local hub?

Hmm, a download speed of only 1.5 megabytes per second... though, if I think about it, maybe that speed just doesn't allow for much multitasking online. The internet is becoming so much more demanding these days, isn't it?
Copying files to an external hard drive in IT Support ·
Lawrence Barnes64 said:It’s entirely plausible—and quite likely, actually!—that something else was hitting that hard drive at that exact moment... perhaps an antivirus scan was running in the background? Or maybe a torrent client was active and hogging resources? 🤷

No, absolutely nothing is running! Honestly, I delete my torrents from uTorrent the very second a download finishes—so there's no way that's it.
I've even tried a full reboot, but no luck there either—still stuck!
Copying files to an external hard drive in IT Support ·
Why is it that whenever I try to move files from my computer to an external hard drive—and honestly, it’s the exact same headache with a standard thumb drive—the speeds are all over the place? Sometimes it feels like it's flying at full throttle, but other times, it crawls along at a pathetic 1 KB/s, even though I haven't even moved the drive to a different USB port!
For instance, if I'm just transferring a movie file around 800 MB, one minute it takes maybe two or three minutes, and the next? It's dragging on for fifteen minutes or more!

The forum has a specific structure designed to help people navigate easily when searching for info and to prevent everything from becoming redundant.

I don't see any "chaos" coming from Benjamin King2—if anything, it seems like certain moderators think they’re playing God! Honestly, maybe they can't get a word in edgewise in their own social circles, so they come here to act like big shots.
If someone is dealing with a burning question—a real, pressing issue!—isn't there a much better chance of finding an answer if they post it in a few different spots? I mean, wouldn't you agree? Different types of people hang out in different sections!
After spending six years on this forum, I think it might be time for me to go looking for a new community elsewhere.

Moderators—could someone please explain why my post regarding the memory card was deleted?
I suspect it’s because I happened to cross-post my question in two different sections. But honestly, I did that on purpose! Wouldn't it be smart to cast a wider net, since different users tend to hang out in different corners of the internet? I rarely ever frequent the Silicon Valley subforums, but since a memory card is, by definition, a piece of hardware, I thought it perfectly reasonable to ask here too—only to have you guys scrub it away. It feels a bit spiteful, don't you think?
