I honestly just love seeing mods who actually show up—maybe I was just being a bit too sensitive about it earlier, who knows? 😁

It would be nice if they actually felt some sort of urge to chat with the "residents" of their little PDF world—you know, like they're part of a social community or something rather than just... well, whatever this is. 😬

I mean, look at the stats: there are 77 people online right now, yet it feels like nobody is even out there to shovel the snow off the driveway! Why is human psychology such a lost cause sometimes? 🤔

(Seriously though, I just want to talk this out—I'm genuinely curious, and no, I'm not part of any weird forum cliques or anything.)

Right now, the admins are mostly tied up handling appeals for moderator decisions over in the Psychology section whenever someone files a complaint.

I actually knew about that little icon, but I honestly never gave much thought to whether I should be flagging duplicate posts on a PDF alongside the four mods.
I was originally planning to just shoot a message directly to a mod—since they're usually the ones hanging around the forum more often—but I wasn't quite sure who specifically handles that side of things. I know you take care of the hazelnut section, plus the US and general stuff. 🤷

(And hey, you're totally right—when I first noticed it, there were only about 77 registered users, and none of us even considered that reporting stuff would actually make life easier for the mods
again -> 🙈)

Sometimes they just miss it or don't have the chance to jump on here—they aren't lurking on the forum twenty-four seven, after all! You might want to shoot them a quick DM just to give them a heads-up that they’ve actually got a duplicate thread running.

The R&D team is still around, don't worry. It's not like the mods have disappeared from the forum entirely; they’re mainly focused on reviewing appeals regarding moderator decisions now. However, since Psychology doesn't have its own dedicated staff at the moment, you can always reach out directly to the admins or just post right here on the community board. Honestly, in cases like this, it’s usually enough to just file a report or shoot over a quick message.

Just click that little checkbox right under the username, next to that little circle showing if someone's online or offline. A box will pop up where you can type in why you're reporting them, and then just hit send. 🙂 That report goes straight to the moderators handling that PDF. Go ahead and flag those ads.

Hey, did you end up reporting that duplicate thread?
Why do my posts keep getting deleted after 15 minutes? in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Whoa there, hold on a second! This isn't really how you file an appeal. You've gotta give us some actual context—let us know exactly which topic or topics you're talking about and which specific PDF you're looking at. Once you lay that out for us, we'll be more than happy to jump in and help you figure it out.

Posts really shouldn't be merged if there are other entries sandwiched in between them, because that totally messes with the flow of the conversation and can make the whole discussion feel nonsensical. Just imagine someone asks a question, someone else replies, and then the first person refers back to that answer. If you merge the posts from before and after that reply, it's going to look like they commented on the answer before they even got it—or like the second person replied before the question was even asked—depending on whether the server merges the posts above or below the middle one. That just doesn't make any sense at all. 🙂 Posts should only be merged if they are sitting right next to each other in one continuous sequence.

Honestly, I think moderators ought to be creators themselves; after all, the very core of our mission here on this forum is the act of thinking. 🙂

So—assuming we aren't just talking about someone failing to grasp how Multi-quote works, or merely breaking up a single thought—this isn't considered spamming, right? It won't result in a ban, nor will the moderators merge those posts together?

I didn't say that was a hard rule; it’s more just my own take on things, and the other moderators don't necessarily have to agree with me. In fact, looking around, it seems like plenty of people feel differently. Personally, I don't mind seeing a few posts in a row—honestly, merging them all feels like extra work for no reason. 😁 That said, I will step in and merge them if they’re clearly connected, like when someone is finishing a single thought across two posts, or sometimes if the posts are just incredibly brief.

When I first started out, I used to regularly merge posts from the same user because that was the official moderation guideline back then, but I eventually realized that, in my opinion, it often isn't the best way to go. Most of the time, those consecutive posts actually touch on different parts of the conversation. Plus, merging them can turn a thread into a massive wall of text, and let's be real, super long posts can be a total pain to read. 😁

I actually once sent out a PM warning someone about "spamming" their posts, and afterward, I felt a little bit crazy for even doing it.

I actually laid out my full take on this in this post.

rustydrifter10 said:Post spamming happens when someone drops two or more posts back-to-back that are so short they really should have just been one single message. We're talking a gap of just a few minutes here, because if you wait a couple of hours or even a day, you've probably moved on to a completely different thought anyway.

You see it all the time with some users—mostly the newer folks—who feel the need to start a brand-new post for every single sentence they write. It results in a flurry of online activity where we end up with several posts in a row that were clearly meant to be read as one cohesive thought. Plus, a lot of people don't realize how to use the MQ button effectively, so instead, they'll quote one post with a tiny reply, then quote the next with another tiny reply, and then a third... honestly, that’s just another form of spamming.

It isn't an issue if the posts are distinct or cover totally different ground (it's a bit tricky to explain, but if a topic gets complex and you need to address three different points over several sentences, that's fine), but it becomes a total mess when someone breaks one single idea into multiple posts that have to be pieced together to make sense. Or worse, when we get hit with a mountain of quotes where there's only one line of actual response under every single block of text. Especially frustrating is when someone quotes fifty lines of text just to respond to one tiny part of it (by the way, please just quote the specific snippet you're replying to! It’s nearly impossible to follow the conversation when the quote box is massive and your comment is buried).

A lot of our sub-forums actually have rules against this specifically. They ask that if you have a bunch of thoughts you want to share all at once, just put them in one post. That way, we don't clog up the entire page with a wall of quotes and almost no answers, or a stream of short, disconnected posts that look messy until they eventually get merged.

Anyway, I'm rambling again. My apologies! 😁

Melissa Castillo said:rustydrifter10, look, if this whole thread is just totally baseless—meaning, if Larry Walker24 actually is a constructive member of Reddit and I’m just sitting here being super jealous of his style, his popularity, and those deep, profound posts of his that honestly belong in a high-security museum vault, then fine! I’ll go ahead and scatter some ashes over my head right now and send you a bouquet of flowers. Just lock the thread immediately and I promise I won't ever bring him up again.

God, seriously, people need to report the indecent posts. Spam should be wiped out and eventually result in a ban. Threads that are nothing more than mindless copy-pasting shouldn't be allowed either, and they ought to be deleted or penalized too. Ultimately, it's up to the moderators to decide how and when to hand out sanctions based on the community rules.

Just wanted to give you all a quick heads-up that this thread probably won't be staying open for very long. If the admins have anything they need to add, they'll step in and let us know, but until then, please just try to keep things civil and watch how you're acting.

I’m definitely jumping on board with the suggestion to just use the ignore feature—honestly, it’s a lifesaver. If you run into any posts that are just plain obnoxious, go ahead and report them. Now, if you happen to deal with a specific user who just won't quit even after you've tried all those methods, don't sit there stressing about it; just reach out to whichever admin you think is most capable of handling that kind of grievance.

Look, you already laid out your whole situation over in the card discussion thread, so the admins and moderators have definitely seen it by now. If they have anything else to add beyond what Phifer and I have already said, they’re more than welcome to weigh in right there—and if they think that warning was totally uncalled for, they can just go ahead and clear it.

Henry Hernandez7 said:Is rustydrifter10 an admin too?

I’m not an admin, but I definitely stand against banning people from chatting on the FBI forums. Like Daniel Ward87 pointed out, one of the whole points of a ban is to stop someone from posting and engaging in discussions with the rest of the community.

The whole prison comparison just doesn't hold water because the goal of prison is to remove someone from society, not to physically block them from communicating with other people—and that part actually happens. Besides, if we're really going to talk about prisons, they have solitary confinement too. 😁

So, what if we just ban this one? I mean, wouldn't you rather start using this instead of that old thing?
How do I get my old username back? in Feedback & Suggestions ·
That’s not really what profiles look like after being banned for a while; usually, if you see something like that, it means there was some underlying glitch or technical issue that caused certain usernames to be wiped out entirely. That's why they look that way—banned accounts always have the exact same look.
How do I get my old username back? in Feedback & Suggestions ·
The reason they gave you for the ban was that you’re supposedly a clone of a user who's already banned. But looking back through your recent posts, I don't see anything where you actually asked for a permanent ban. Do you happen to have a link to that somewhere, maybe?

rustydrifter97 said:My old handle was Marino, but I actually got myself banned. To be honest, I was the one who asked to be banned for good🙂 so I was wondering if there's any way to get it reinstated? If we can bring the old account back, maybe we could just delete this current nickname instead.

If you want to deal with that banned account, your best bet is to reach out to the site admins and just explain the situation—why you originally requested the ban and why you're looking to undo it now. Don't worry about making it some huge, complicated manifesto; just give them a quick, honest summary so they can get a sense of who you are and what happened. 🙂
