I told them that we aren't doing any more nickname changes for the time being. Honestly, even if we were, I doubt this specific change would fly since the original "Shadow" account was active on the forum just the other day.
Henry Walker38 said:Thanks! Is there any way I can get an email address for our moderator, Katherine?
I wouldn't try reaching out via email; it's much better to just send her a private message right here on the forum. If you head over to her profile, look for the "contact info" section, and you'll see the option to "send a private message." That's definitely the best way to go!🙂
Frank Reed4 said:Why was I never chosen as a test subject? I remember posting on that thread about changing my handle because there was some guy named Shadow who hadn't been active in forever, blah blah blah. Now, all of a sudden, he’s back in action. I have no idea what triggered this. Did you guys go ahead and reactivate him yourselves, or what? 😂
Lest I forget, it would be an absurd notion for anyone to think about changing usernames once they’ve already built up a significant post count. It just doesn't make sense. I'll go ahead and throw out a figure here, purely off the top of my head—let's say twenty posts or more—and that's where the line should be drawn.
Spectre used to have 21 posts. Just sitting there. Looking back on it now. I remember when things were different. Back then, everything felt more straightforward, less cluttered. Now? It’s all just noise. Anyway, that was the count. 21. Not much, but it was what it was. ☕ I'm feeling pretty down about that number 30. It’s hard to swallow when Frank Reed4 is sitting there with a 34. Just one of those days, I suppose.
Now you can finally take the noose off Spectre; they were about to hang an innocent man. 😁
I’m not looking to hang anyone out to dry here. I’m simply pointing out certain irregularities and injustices. It’s painfully obvious that even among equals, there are those who hold more weight than others—and now, it seems they're all trying to pull a fast one by hiding behind these "experiment" excuses. And honestly? I find this whole experiment concept incredibly murky. If the goal was to see if Spectre....Do I need to change my handle since he's acting as a moderator? Or does a different procedure apply for someone in that position? 🍿
Not necessarily. Let's just hold off and wait for Tyndall to weigh in with some more details. ☕ Tyndall?
Yeah, exactly. But Tyndall?
So, this whole conversation about changing usernames just kind of exploded—I honestly don't know exactly when it spiraled into its own thread because it’s been such a whirlwind to follow—but basically, Anderlon suggested something along the lines of, "Hey, why don't we make a rule where people can change their handles if their original ones have been inactive for a long time and they only have a handful of posts?" A few people chimed in saying it was a great idea, so then everyone started brainstorming how to actually write that into our existing rules. Then Spectre asked if he could change his without using a period since it fit within those new guidelines, and Anderlon said sure and went ahead and did it! After that, someone else requested a change, and then a few other folks who were eligible changed theirs too, simply because they wanted to. Then someone jumped in to argue that we shouldn't be changing names like that at all. And right as things were heating up, I started that thread about account amnesties, and everything else just kind of got pushed to the back burner. 😁 Or maybe I'm misremembering the timing? 🤔
Anyway, maybe I'm exaggerating a little bit 😁, it wasn't quite that chaotic, but that's pretty much the gist of it. The discussion about name changes kicked off because we wanted to be accommodating to our active community members, especially since we get so many requests regarding accounts from people who haven't posted in ages or barely ever posted to begin with. There's no conspiracy or anything crazy going on here; we just paused things for a moment until we can get back to the more important stuff. 🙂
Looks like your thread was taken down. You should probably shoot a quick DM over to our moderator, Katherine, to get the full scoop on what happened. 🙂
I just figured it might be a bit much to simply delete people without even giving them a chance to realize their handle had been changed, but I’m just curious about how the technical side of things works... Since, as it happens, I registered that way myself and then drifted away from the forum for a while before returning. Not that anyone is out to claim my specific username, but still... 😁
An experiment is fine, nothing too heavy, but let's not act surprised when people react or ask questions—especially those who are sensitive to any hint of an abuse of power. It’s perfectly natural for folks to feel uneasy seeing privileges granted to some that aren't available to us, particularly since, by sheer coincidence, none other than the newly minted Spectre was in charge of these name changes. And naturally, we weren't given any heads-up about these new features. You're already getting defensive, but honestly, you should be glad people are staying vigilant against potential overreach; it's actually a sign of political maturity and an awareness of one's own rights, duties, and the importance of maintaining control over one's space, identity, actions, body, handle, and avatar within this digital jungle. 😁
I think I can finally log in normally now. Look, nobody intended for anything bad to happen or for anyone to get hurt here, but I totally see why there’s a gray area when you consider someone might actually want to get back into their account. That said, the rule shouldn't apply to anyone with a significant post count or anyone who's been active within the last few years. The concept itself isn't necessarily bad, it just needs a lot more fine-tuning before it's set in stone.
Look, an experiment is fine—it's not the end of the world—but please don't act surprised when people start questioning things or getting sensitive about potential abuses of power. It’s completely natural for people to feel uneasy seeing certain permissions granted to some while we're left in the dark, especially since, by total coincidence, it turns out Spectre was the one tasked with handling these nickname changes.
I really don't blame anyone; it's perfectly reasonable to have questions when sudden changes happen without any heads-up. 🙂
The goal wasn't to discriminate against anyone; we just didn't want to go public with this phase while the final decisions on who gets changed and when are still pending. We aren't quite sure how the mechanics will work yet, though we don't anticipate major issues. We honestly believe it's better to move slowly and establish a concrete, formal policy that applies to everyone equally, rather than rolling this out en masse with such vague guidelines.
Oh, naturally, none of us were given any notice regarding these new capabilities. And wow, look at that immediate defensiveness! Honestly, you should be glad that people are staying vigilant against potential power trips; that's actually a sign of political maturity and an awareness of one's own rights and responsibilities. It shows people care about their identity, their presence, and their digital footprint in this virtual zoo. 😁
If we stay silent, we're accused of ignoring the issue. If we respond, we're accused of being defensive. 🙄 ☕ 😁 It feels like you can't win with you guys. 😳 😁
The reason you haven't been notified is that a final decision hasn't been reached yet. But once it is, we promise we'll let you know. 🙂
vividtiger922 said:Wait, what happens if an inactive user like Nicole decides to jump back into the fray using their old handle? For instance, I was MIA for about two years before deciding to start posting again, and honestly, I just couldn't be bothered to go through the hassle of setting up a brand-new profile. Then you have someone like Spectre, who is now essentially an ex-Spectre... If a person tries to log in with their former username without realizing it’s been changed, what actually happens?
From what I understand, when you log in for the first time after a change, a notification pops up letting you know what the new handle is. I’ve actually mentioned to the admins that I'm personally not a huge fan of this approach, even though the intention was only to rename people who have been gone for ages and barely have any posts—I think they were looking at something like over five years of inactivity combined with a single-digit post count as the threshold.
The conversation also touched on how we could lighten the load on the server by deleting old, inactive profiles while keeping all their posts visible (which would effectively free up those old usernames if someone else wanted them). But that discussion didn't really gain much traction, and everyone decided to set that aside for now until we tackle some other, more pressing issues.
Look, I’m not out here trying to play games with anyone, and from what I can tell, people aren't really experimenting with things like that much anymore anyway. Honestly, I don't even know all the gritty details. Even when rules get bypassed—whether we just delete a post or slap a warning on it instead of handing out a formal strike—I haven't seen anyone actually complaining about it. 😁
But jokes aside, I know Anderson changed his handle a few times before he finally decided to stop, mostly because he's waiting for that new rule he's been cooking up to actually be made public. It's going to drop alongside all those other updates they're planning to roll out to beef up the current rulebook. Until everything is crystal clear and totally transparent, there's just no point in applying things selectively to certain people. That's why he's stopped messing with the nicknames for now.
I know Anderson has switched up his handle a few times himself, so someone else might be better equipped to give you the full rundown on the specifics. 🙂
The forum rules tend to evolve over time—they’re always being tweaked and fine-tuned—so it’s entirely possible the policy on usernames is currently under review too. We might even see some changes regarding signatures, which would finally let you guys get back to customizing them yourselves! 😁 It honestly feels like they’re taking the same cautious approach they did with avatars: giving the moderators a chance to test the waters first and see how everything holds up. It's basically a way to make sure we don't dive headfirst into something that ends up being a total headache down the road. By running this little experiment on a smaller group, it’s much easier for the admins to keep an eye on things and pivot if necessary.
copperheron18 said:Look, there is a massive gap between what happened 30 or 40 years ago and what is happening today; any rational person can see that. Back in the day, a professor was highly respected—a doctor was even more so. People used to bring gifts (bribes, let's call them 😁) because those professions were held in the highest esteem. You had the elite tier: the teacher, the doctor, the lawyer. You simply cannot compare the past to the present while my sister-in-law is working now. So much has shifted in the interim—economic instability, social shifts—which has left many people on edge, causing them to lash out at anyone within reach. The current state of society is just different, and while it affects teachers heavily because they deal with such diverse groups, it isn't limited to them.
It is not the same thing to be a teacher at a prestigious prep school where the kids are decent, actually want to learn, pay attention, care about their grades, and come from educated, cultured families. It's an entirely different universe compared to teaching at a three-year vocational school populated mostly by delinquents who lack basic vocabulary, manners, or any sense of decorum.
Middle schools are essentially a volatile mix of both extremes, and no one can dispute that. Being a teacher at a top-tier academy (specifically the one I attended, though many others are similar) is, in my opinion, a fantastic career. But being a teacher at some vocational school (I won't name names to avoid offense) is 🙂
Look, it’s not like everyone in vocational schools is a thug, and it's certainly not true that every kid in a prep school is a perfect little model student. For me, what really matters is who is standing at the front of the classroom and how they approach teaching my kids. When I was picking out an elementary school, I looked closely at their track record and found out that some of their teachers even help write the actual textbooks used across the country. And that isn't just any random school; they have real substance. Honestly? I’d much rather send my child to a trade school where they might actually walk away with a solid grasp of grammar and spelling than send them to some "elite" academy only to have them come out more illiterate than a third grader. What's the point of a diploma if there's nothing behind it?
I’m totally with what shadowpilot8 is saying here. 🙂
Look, you’re just pointing out a rule violation, plain and simple. Just because someone manages to squeeze in some helpful, on-topic info within the same post doesn't mean they get a free pass for breaking the rules; the infraction still happened, so they've gotta face the consequences.

Yeah, "wonderful" is one way to put it—I'd personally describe the current search function as "completely useless." Sure, using Google to search the forum is a step up, but you end up wading through ten pages of results that you have to sift through manually. And don't even get me started on searching within a single thread. 🤣
Look, those PDF topic lists are definitely helpful tools, but I feel like we're being way too harsh when someone gets penalized for posting a "duplicate" thread. A user shows up with a question, looking for a quick answer, and they're expected to dig through everything mentioned above? Honestly, they might as well head over to a university library and start researching from scratch. If a moderator sees a duplicate, just merge the thread or give them a nudge. We have plenty of mods around to help out. This isn't some intense FBI interrogation where you're being judged for a technicality or a procedural error... and then getting slapped with a strike on top of it. Just be a little more lenient. But hey, that's just my two cents.
I couldn't agree more. 🙂
Those topic indexes are honestly such a lifesaver, and most of the PDFs actually include them now. Plus, there’s really no need to go throwing out sanctions for minor slip-ups that can be fixed in two seconds, especially when nobody was actually trying to cause trouble or break the rules.
But if I could pivot to something else mentioned above that I find even more concerning, it’s this whole business of editing posts. In my opinion, a user's post should stay exactly as they wrote it, unless it's just some minor aesthetic cleanup—you know, fixing a broken quote or trimming down extra fluff in a citation. Aside from that, what a person writes should either be left entirely alone or the whole post should just be deleted. 🙂
She just registered, she's got a couple of posts, and it's pretty obvious she hasn't figured out how to navigate all the features this forum offers yet. 🤷
Even if that search tool is kind of questionable—I mean, try typing in something like "spider" 🤣 ...you'll end up pulling up every damn PDF on this site, from kids' toys and nature stuff to legal documents... 🤣 It's like what was said above regarding those long threads—just take a vacation and read through them. But no, she needs the answer in an hour. 🤣
Oh, please, don't act like such a saint. 🤣 The point isn't about whether we're making fun of her or if she picked the right sub-forum, and nobody is attacking Katrina. We're just trying to reach a consensus so maybe people could use a little less attitude.😳😁
well, looking at your handle, it’s pretty obvious you take yourself a bit too seriously too... clearly😬
The thing is, the search function actually has this awesome feature where you can search specifically through PDFs so you aren't sifting through the entire forum at once. 😍 Plus, you have the option to search within individual threads separately if you want to be precise. 🙂
If the built-in forum search isn't cutting it for you, don't forget there's a Google search bar right there in the top left corner of the forum—it works like a charm. 🥳

This is exactly my point: your subjective opinion is treated like gospel, and you even have backup, which is honestly pathetic. I am neither spamming (so please, give me one single example), nor am I trolling, and I certainly am not making things personal when I simply express my opinion on the posts I've read regarding this topic. By saying, "if you keep insisting that the Green Party and its rules should bend to suit you... we will be forced to request a partial ban," you aren't just insinuating—you are outright threatening me... and of course, you have your little group of co-moderators backing you up...
It isn't just about your personal opinion, Empress. If you actually look back at the message threads regarding your deleted posts, it's crystal clear that you were being nothing but insulting and provocative.

That isn't a threat. When users systematically and persistently break the rules despite warnings and sanctions, partial bans are issued so that discussions can continue on the forum without constant trolling ruining it for everyone else, and to spare the rest of the community from insults.
Please watch your tone; you are perfectly capable of engaging in polite, reasoned debate, so there really is no need to constantly disregard the rules.
I went ahead and took a deep dive into all the notices you've received from the IRS, and honestly, every single one of them is completely justified. You’ve been insulting other users, baiting the moderators, and just straight-up trolling different threads... you're breaking the rules laid out in our official handbook, yet I don't see a single sanction on your profile that actually sticks. On top of that, we've reached out via DM several times to explain exactly why you can't act this way, but you just decided to keep doing your own thing regardless, which is exactly why those infractions started piling up.
Please, do me a favor and go back and thoroughly read through the general forum rules—and make sure you don't skip over the specific ones for the IRS section—so you can actually follow them moving forward. Since we haven't been turning a blind eye to these violations up until now, we aren't going to start playing favorites or letting it slide in the future, otherwise, a permanent ban is looking pretty inevitable.
The personal attacks on the author and those thinly veiled, plastic-wrapped insinuations suggesting she’s somehow a "bad parent" because of her personal life—whether it's being divorced, having a big family, or dealing with an ex-stepfather—stop right here.
The constant provocation, the condescending lectures, the nitpicking, and all that other nonsense? That ends now, too.
If you aren't capable of expressing your opinion in a way that's actually meaningful, polite, and backed by real arguments, then please just steer clear of this topic entirely, or prepare to get shut down.
We generally don't go around deleting old posts because doing that would totally mess up the flow of the conversation, and honestly, it just wouldn't be fair to everyone else who put in the effort to contribute to the topic.
Just a heads-up, you aren't able to delete your old posts once they're up, but if you're looking to swap out your email address, you can easily do that within your account settings under the "edit email & password" section. 🙂
