Why shouldn't we be able to Ban users we interact with? in Feedback & Suggestions ·
coppernomad44 said:Fine, but why am I getting an answer from you instead of someone who actually knows what happened...🙂

So, you were asking why we don't really get involved in the bans or the drama involving folks from other Reddit threads, and I figured I’d finally weigh in on that. Look, even though I know exactly who Bear is and I know the whole story behind why he got banned, I honestly don't think it's worth me sitting here trying to explain all that mess right now.

coppernomad44 said:Yeah, we are repeating ourselves... 😁

I’m asking again, why shouldn't this matter to anyone else who actually cares? Why does someone get Banned...

Sure, the reason for the ban was stated, but it didn't make any sense to me. And clearly, it hasn't made sense to anyone else either...
Look, Smizl asked for a specific, well-reasoned explanation as to why Bear received a permanent ban, but she never got one. I don't see why a clarification can't be provided, or why if people are genuinely curious about the reasons, they aren't allowed to have an explanation...

You can keep insisting that it's just a private matter between the banned individual and the administration, but I still don't see why it has to be kept exclusive to them, or why the reasoning can't be shared with everyone else who's interested...

since we've only heard the reasoning from one person, and it's obviously left us all pretty confused...

Let’s be real: you don't just get a permanent ban for breathing wrong. It takes a massive pile of violations—we're talking someone with a huge reputation score—to trigger that kind of hammer. Or, it could be one single, massive violation, like trying to create a clone account while your main profile is already banned.

Because permanent bans aren't handed out left and right, anyone who follows the activity on this Reddit should probably have a pretty good idea of why it happened, since someone facing that level of discipline likely wasn't exactly following the rules.

Just to be totally clear, I have no idea who Bear is or what he specifically did to get banned.

No warning or anything?

Come on. 😁

I'm really not trying to make excuses for anyone else's decisions here, nor am I looking to start an argument about that specifically. My point is more general—it's about the whole idea of informing third parties about bans or when other users get flagged.

I’m telling you, this isn't even about some problematic user on the Reddit!

The admin who actually handed out the Ban will be the one to weigh in on her situation over in the specific Reddit thread she started.

coppernomad44 said:Sure, they involve the users and the admins, and I agree there's no need for a massive public announcement, but that wasn't even my point...
What I'm actually wondering is why we aren't allowed to ask the moderators for a bit of clarity on why someone was banned in the first place.

And where is this idea of "justification" coming from? I’m not asking for anyone to make excuses to me, nor do I particularly care about that...
It’s more about the fact that if a ban seems confusing and we want an explanation, who else are we supposed to turn to besides the admins—the only ones who actually know what happened and can give us the reasoning...

At the end of the day, if we're interested, why shouldn't they explain it... 🤷
It feels pretty standard to want to know why people we interact with are getting kicked off, I don't see why that's such a controversial take...

Well, the thing is, that's really just between the user and the administration. We're circling back here. 😁
If you've been following or reading someone's posts, there's a very high chance you've already seen exactly what they were typing, so you can probably piece together their communication style and figure out for yourself why they might have caught heat from a mod.

I have some people I truly care about who end up getting banned every now and then, and I usually have a pretty good idea of why—mostly because I actually know them! At the end of the day, I don't really care if they earned it on Reddit, Usenet, or some random niche site, nor do I particularly care which admin pulled the trigger.

If they feel like the ban was totally unfair, they can file an appeal (usually 😁) through the proper channels. If they decide to take their grievance public, then everyone will see it, including those of you who are curious and want to know the backstory.

On another note, if the Code of conduct isn't making sense to you, then you should probably spend some more time studying it and asking specific questions about those particular rules. To be honest, I didn't know all the fine print myself until I ended up getting flagged for breaking one! Even then, I just saw it as my own mistake. It wasn't the moderator's fault for flagging me, nor was it the fault of people who broke similar rules without getting caught—it was just on me for skimming the rules during registration instead of actually reading them. 😁

Warnings and bans are strictly between the users who receive them and the site administration; there’s really no reason to broadcast those details to the rest of the community. Honestly, it's just not anyone else's business. Some people might prefer to keep their strikes and bans private, and if you're truly curious, they can always reach out and tell you themselves via DM once their suspension is over.

If a post is still visible on a thread, you can usually figure out why a warning was issued. But if the post has been wiped, there’s almost certainly a good reason for that behind the scenes.
My post got deleted in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Honestly, it would be super helpful if you could just point out which thread this happened in, so the mods and admins have an idea of who was actually being called out. 😁

But look, since I’ve already wiped three of your posts today, I’m pretty sure you were talking about me. To be blunt, I thought that post was pure trolling, so I went ahead and deleted it. Then you jumped in to comment on me deleting it—so I cleared that out too—and then you just reposted the original thing with a snarky little remark that earned you a warning before getting nuked entirely.

If you ask me, I’ve been more than patient here; you easily could’ve walked away with multiple strikes by now, but you didn't.

I already laid it all out for you in a DM, I'm laying it out for you again now, and if that still doesn't clear things up for you, then just sit tight and wait for the admins to weigh in and give their take.

Anyway, why am I getting zero response from you regarding everything I've laid out here? Why does it feel like everyone's just straight-up ignoring me? 🤷

Were you actually banned when you tried to post over in the KZB?

Look, you can't actually "close" an account here, but honestly, you're totally free to just stop posting on the forum whenever you feel like it if you want to move on.

Just a heads-up for everyone: while users are under a ban, they won't be able to send or receive any private messages.
How can I check how long another user is banned? in Forum Help! ·
Look, when it comes to someone else's disciplinary record or bans, those details are strictly between the individual and the site administrators. For privacy reasons, we don't just hand out that kind of information to other members of the community.

The only way you can actually check on your own infractions or any active bans is through the official channel specifically set up for that—the User Support Portal.
Having trouble opening this? in Forum Help! ·
The forum is currently struggling with server overload issues, and from what I’ve gathered, the tech team is working overtime to get things back on track. Whether they actually pull it off remains to be seen, though. 😁

What you're pointing out isn't even the only headache users are dealing with right now; honestly, there’s an open thread for pretty much every single gripe on this site. Some of these issues have even sparked multiple discussions. 😁

Grace Barnes58 said:Is there any way to get rid of those photos I uploaded a few months back?

Unfortunately, you can't delete them anymore. Once they're up, they stay up! You can only edit or pull down a post within about 90 minutes of hitting that submit button.

rowdysailor5 said:Does anyone actually get a notification when someone posts right after me, or am I supposed to just go digging through every single thread I've ever touched to see if anyone replied? Hmm... honestly, it's such a pain if there isn't an alert.

No, you won't get a ping just because someone else jumped in after you, but you can always subscribe to a specific thread so you get an alert every time there's a new reply.

If you're trying to track down all your own contributions, just head over to your profile—there’s a handy little link there that lets you "find more posts by rowdysailor5."

And one more thing... I was reading this one thread and then—poof!—it just vanished into thin air. Like, where did it go? How? Why?! Ugh, I must have scrolled past it way too fast... oh man, what a headache! 😉

If that thread isn't showing up in the subforum where you originally saw it, it likely got deleted. Usually, that happens because it ended up breaking one of the community rules.
Proposal: Implementing a reputation system in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Nicholas King said:...regardless of whether it's explicitly written under their username or not. 🙂

There are plenty of reasons to be against this, and almost none in favor.

First off, if we started labeling people as "guru, Gandhi, secretary of the Young Communist League," it would basically imply that everyone else on the forum is just "bottom-tier noise"—people who haven't been noticed simply because they haven't posted enough yet or for whatever other random reason. I don't think that's particularly fair.

The potential for fraud is also massive—I mean, I could easily set up ten different clone accounts, pretend to be a guru, a Gandhi, and a secretary of the Young Communist League all at once, and then use those fake personas to absolutely crush anyone who dared to disagree with me yesterday.

Finally, aside from purely technical troubleshooting, credibility is a highly subjective thing. Just look at any major political debate or even something like a heated discussion on a news network; you'll see people who are equally credible and equally intelligent giving completely contradictory advice.

So, if you actually want to figure out who is (in your opinion) trustworthy, you should probably just get to work and do your own reading.

In such a way, the huge amount of pointless arguing that starts on almost every single thread after the first few posts could be reduced.

How, oh, how exactly? 😕

How exactly would introducing a "credibility label" reduce unnecessary arguments?

Well, I'd imagine you wouldn't feel much inclined to pick a fight with someone who clearly has more street cred than you do. 😁

In our school, the only ones lugging books home every day are the kids reading the classics, not the ones stuck with those massive all-day textbooks.🙂
