Laptop question in IT Support ·
Laura Chase6 said:Care to explain? Is there some looming catastrophe if I don't kill the power completely?

Look, if everything is set up right and configured correctly, nothing bad should happen.
The whole thing really comes down to being certain that your settings are actually dialed in properly.
But honestly, the fact that you’re even asking this here tells me you aren't quite sure about your setup.

As for what could actually go sideways, that depends entirely on what exactly isn't working or which specific setting on that laptop is off.

granitenomad26 said:Thanks for the link.
The card seems fine now. I just blasted through over 500 photos and everything looks solid—they open without any issues and the metadata is all there.
Basically, 😁

hasn't happened again.

Did you actually run a diagnostic on the card? I don't mean just checking if a photo opens; I mean a real, deep scan to see if the data is actually intact.

If you aren't allowed to say, why even bother coming here for advice? Just shut up and deal with the provider you're paying. 🙂

I'm wondering the same thing. I'd hate to accidentally sign up with them as a customer if this turns out to be true. 😉

If my hunch is right, even they won't be able to do much with it.
Still, I’m crossing my fingers that I'm wrong. 😉

software would be best to use if I wanted to format the document so it flips through like a

digital magazine?

Thanks a bunch!

p.s. I don't want to publish it online; I've noticed there are certain programs out there designed specifically for that purpose

Just print it out. That way it stays off the internet, and you can still flip through the pages like a real magazine.

granitenomad26 said:I've been using a 32GB SD card (HC Class 10) in my Microsoft camera for about a year now. Everything was smooth when transferring videos to my PC, though I did have one hiccup where some photos lagged during the transfer—it corrupted three shots, but I didn't think much of it at the time. The card was formatted and everything seemed fine until recently, when out of 150 photos, 28 of them just went bad.

The weird part is, I could see all the photos perfectly on the camera itself. But once I moved them to the computer, those 28 files are totally unreadable. There are no thumbnails, and none of the metadata shows up either (file size, settings used, etc.). Now they aren't even showing up on the camera anymore. I'm completely lost. (Just for context, the corrupted files aren't in any kind of sequence; it's just random, like ten good ones followed by two bad ones, and so on.)

Is there any way to salvage these photos?

I'm not sure if those specific photos can be saved, but you should definitely run a diagnostic on that card to see if it's failing. Better safe than sorry for next time.
How do I download an entire website? in IT Support ·
ironcyclist58 said:Look, if you actually own the site, you don't need some middleman. Just grab everything via FTP or whatever access you've already got through your hosting provider... 🤷

That’s exactly what crossed my mind yesterday when I saw this thread and the original post.
I didn't have a second to type anything out because I was rushing out the door.
If he's claiming he's going to upload new content there, he clearly has access. So why all the "middleman" talk? 😉
It works both ways: if you can push new stuff up, you can pull the old stuff down. Simple as that. 😉
Need help installing Rosetta Stone in IT Support ·
Joshua Davis74 said:Hey, I'm not sure if there's already a thread for this, but I could use some help.

I'm trying to get Rosetta Stone installed. The installer popped up, but I'm a bit stuck on what to do next. Any advice?

Close the application and copy (or move) the desired languages (.rsd files) to:

- Windows XP: %Documents and Settings%\All Users\Application data

- Windows 7/8/10: "C:\ProgramData\Rosetta Stone\Language Training\AutoInstall"

Start the application, it will detect the rsd file and install it.

Once installed, the .rsd archive file is automatically transferred to Installed subfolder in the above folder.

A window will appear asking for a serial number. select The Activated Products Tab and then click continue Now to install The language pack updates , close out of Rosetta Stone application

Now open Rosetta Stone and it will update the language packs.

- Windows XP: %Documents and Settings%\All Users\Application data

- Windows 7/8/10: "C:\ProgramData\Rosetta Stone\Language Training\Updates"

Note: You may have to create the Updates directory if you do not see it.

Now open Rosetta Stone and it will update the language packs.

coastalmaker24 said:Hey there! I’m heading off to college soon and want to clear out all the junk from my laptop so it actually runs fast. I’ve got about 100GB of photos, games, music, and whatnot sitting on here. My question is: should I grab a 128GB thumb drive or just go with an external hard drive? The USB stick is definitely cheaper, but I’m worried about how long it'll actually last. Which one is more reliable (less likely to die on me mid-semester) and has a better lifespan? What would you guys recommend? 🤔 🤔

When you say "USB," you mean a standard thumb drive, right?
Honestly, stay away from those cheap 128GB flash drives.
Actually, if you already own one that feels suspiciously cheap or sketchy, just toss it. Seriously. Don't let the temptation hit you to store anything important on it.

shadowlynx102 said:If you want my honest opinion, Get Data Back for NTFS is hands down the best tool out there for this kind of thing. Period.

I can't speak to whether it's the "best" out there, but a few years back, I used it to pull a massive amount of stuff off an external drive. To be honest, I don't even know exactly how much was on there—it was basically a digital junk drawer I’d been filling for years. Still, I'm pretty sure it managed to claw back well over 90% of it.

frozenowl19 said:Hey there,

We use this shared server at work—basically our version of Google Drive—and I accidentally nuked a Word doc. Now I can't find it anywhere. Any idea where it might have gone, or did I just kill it for good?

Since nobody else is jumping in here, I’ll give it a shot. Fair warning: you probably won't like the answer.
The real question is for whoever manages that server at your office.
Just go ask your IT guy if they run regular backups of everything stored on that drive.
There. That's your answer.

ironcyclist58 said:These assignments are pretty bizarre; they don't even bother explaining what you're actually supposed to do.
For instance, with problem number 7, what's the deal with part "(C)"?
Maybe it’s referring to an old Class C subnet that used that specific address, but I don't see how that connects to anything regarding 20 hosts or whatever else...

Yeah, I'm finding them just as weird. I spend most of my time working in the Cisco world, where instructions are usually way more precise. That's why I mentioned they feel incomplete.

I get it. Only problem is, looking at the image, these aren't really full problems—or they're missing pieces. Something feels off. At least, that's my first impression.

Morgan Ortiz6 said:Uuuuu, so now my neighbor is telling me this isn't a great move for hosting my own sites because the whole thing only stays live as long as my computer is running.
Basically, he's saying I'd have to leave my rig powered on 24/7 just so people can actually access the pages.
Is that actually how it works, or is he just talking nonsense?

You didn't mention in your first post that you wanted the site to be accessible to everyone.

I mean, no matter where you are in the States—whether it's at your house or someone else's—if you want to host websites so you or anyone else can get to them, that machine has to stay powered up.
So yeah, your neighbor is spot on.

ironcyclist58 said:Looks like you're trying to hit port 990, which means you're aiming for FTP over TLS/SSL.
The server might not actually support encryption...
Try turning the encryption off and see if that works.

Yeah, that's definitely what's happening.

Morgan Ortiz6 said:I see people tossing around the term "self-hosted web server" all over the internet lately, but I’m still a bit fuzzy on what the actual point is.
If I were to set up my own server from scratch—say, using something like Apache—what would I actually be able to do with it?
From what I gather, I could basically just upload and store my own files there.
But what I’m really wondering is, could I also host a website I built myself, maybe something made in WordPress?

You can absolutely host your own website on your own server.

wearyhawk22 said:I’ve finally started building my very first website, following the guide found at this link.
Everything seemed to be moving along smoothly until I fired up FileZilla. I entered all my credentials for my hosting account (hosted via Bluehost) exactly as instructed. But once I hit connect, I just get this:

Connection established, waiting for welcome message.
Insecure server, it does not support FTP over TLS.
USER a9359875
331 User a9359875 OK. Password required
PASS '"""""""""*
530 Login authentication failed
Critical error: Could not connect to server

Could someone please help me out? I honestly have no idea what I'm doing wrong here.

You really need to check with the hosting provider you're using. Based on this log, it looks like you just typed the wrong username or password, even if you're sure they're correct.
Basically, the username seems fine, but the password isn't hitting the mark.

Someone's making a mistake here.
Question: Any good dual SIM phones out there? in IT Support ·
Usually, you can't run both data connections at the exact same time. You'll need to jump into your settings and specify which card you want to use for your data connection.
boldbadger20 said:I get it.

But if there’s a legitimate reason, can someone actually request what was being searched from my IP address on, say, May 15, 2015?

So, it’s actually possible?

Sure you can. ISPs keep logs for a set period, and honestly, they're legally required to.
And if you happen to catch the attention of some intelligence agency, those logs are going to be kept even more carefully.
