Andrew Gomez40 said:Fine, whatever, but if they're just dumping all the big names into one single band, that's still pretty weak. The brutal truth is that Florence + The Machine aren't even at their peak anymore, and they're lagging behind by a year or two too, but we're used to that by now. Honestly, I'm not expecting any better announcements before the festival hits—hopefully, I'm wrong. ☕

The only consolation is that we’re still better than that overrated Lollapalooza. They're just Americans after all! 😁

You're talking total nonsense. Clearly, music is just a technical term to you.

When Florence + The Machine dropped their first album, nobody knew who they were, and they were playing venues in Ljubljana just five years ago.
Now, because they have two full albums out, they're suddenly at their "peak" and "lagging behind" in coming to the US??

Every single year, there are dozens of concerts in the States for bands that only have one album, and half the clubs are empty.
Are you saying most bands have already "passed their peak" before they even release a debut?

And that comment about Lollapalooza is pointless. Those two festivals have nothing in common, except for when Coachella was trying to be a mainstream fest by bringing in various Jamiroquai or nerdov types a couple of years back.

Coachella actually woke up and stayed true to being a real indie rock festival. You'll never see acts like TV on the Radio, Alice in Chains, The Flaming Lips, or Death Cab for Cutie showing up at Lollapalooza.
Iggy Pop and Editors were incredible—honestly, Iggy was phenomenal, and Editors killed it too.
A total blowout.

Everything else felt watered down. Every single day, there was maybe one band worth seeing, and none of that actual festival energy...

Look, I get that Artics are the hottest thing right now. I haven't seen them because they aren't my vibe, but my gut feeling is that this festival is circling the drain...

The organizers probably think that just because Coachella is a big brand name, people will just show up and buy tickets by default, regardless of how trash the lineup is.

Three days of a festival with maybe one or two heavy hitters a day—some of whom you've already seen—plus a mediocre main stage and zero interesting indie acts? This is just going downhill from here if they keep this up.

I have no clue how those two bands could even be mentioned in the same breath. As for New Order, it was nice seeing them for the sake of general culture, even if they only dropped one killer album about 30 years ago. 😁

You're just so cool...

...you should've just admitted you actually listened to that one album exactly once in your entire life.

Nobody listens to NO for "general culture." You listen because their songs are absolute Peak. Every single album.

You probably consulted Dragaš for this "review" of yours.
Canada isn't even confirmed yet.

It’ll probably happen soon, but it sucks that it’s part of Lollapalooza.

Radiohead needs to do their own headlining set.

And they should do it at Madison Square Garden in San Francisco. Now that would be something.)))
Gregory Harris8 said:Honestly, because of him, bands actually bother showing up to this country when I doubt they'd ever swing by on their own.

That’s true, but we're talking about Alice in Chains, Sonic Youth, and The Flaming Lips here. That's a huge deal.

Coachella isn't some big shot festival either. There are tons of interesting shows happening all over the US throughout the year, outside of Coachella.
What were your main grievances with America? in Close to Politics ·
Scott Stewart6 said:Why does this matter in 2011?

It matters to people in Mexico because any little bit of nostalgia for the old USA helps them feel less isolated from the rest of the world. It’s basically therapy for them.

Just a few months ago, a poll showed that 95% of Americans wouldn't want anything even remotely resembling the old USA ever again.

So I have no idea why Mexicans keep asking the exact same questions over and over.
Sean Sanders said:Some musicians just keep leveling up, while others either stall out or go downhill once they hit a certain age. Look, "Outkast" isn't a bad album, and neither is "Geometry of Love," but they don't hit those insane peaks like "Oxygene," "Equinoxe," "Zoolook," or "Rendez vous." Honestly, everything from "Metamorphoses" onwards feels like it's lacking that elite caliber, even if the stuff isn't technically bad. Plus, the guy is 63. Even if he's been playing for 5 or 10 years, that's nothing—he's definitely not in his prime anymore. Given all that, he’s on the decline. That doesn't mean he sucks, it just means he's winding down. Get it?

Here's the reality: the man is 63. Aging is a basic fact of life, so I don't get why you're making such a huge deal out of a totally normal biological process.

The part you're completely ignoring is that Jean-Michel Jarre makes music that stays ahead of its time, regardless of when it was actually recorded.

He's a total sound expert who built his own instruments and gear from scratch.

Every single note you heard at the concert was PLAYED BY HAND, and that's the kind of music that lasts forever.

Bottom line: he will always be MODERN and CURRENT.

Today's electronic music is all just clicking buttons on a computer because actual analog musicians don't exist anymore. And they don't exist because they never truly understood the concept of SOUND in the first place!

Clear enough for you??

Scott Hill70 said:This band has this annoying habit where, despite all their brilliant tracks, they consistently manage to put together a pretty mediocre setlist (at least that’s how it went on the last two tours). Plus, the frontman—Mr. Everything himself—always manages to overshadow a great performance with his narcissism and megalomania. And honestly, the new drummer isn't even half as good as the old one.

Still, if they hit New York City, I'm front and center. 😁

darkfox14 said:F*** this festival. You've got rappers who haven't dropped an album in seven years headlining alongside Nick Cave's side project. Reading all your posts just makes me even happier that I skipped this tragic comedy of an event.
My only regret is missing Arcade Fire, but they're at their peak right now and they'll definitely be back in the States soon. I'd rather just catch them at a solo show anyway.

Nick Cave absolutely deserves a headlining slot regardless of what he's playing, and his management knows he's massive here in America.

The biggest fail of this whole thing is, in my opinion, having way too many local acts (including the ones from nearby places like Canada or Mexico), and bringing out Cypress Hill was a total disaster.
Megan Rodriguez44 said:Mastodon After that, even Nick Cave couldn't deliver what he used to.

The crowd looked like they were out for a retirement home field trip.

Mastodon was absolutely fascinating.

The crowd was actually decent—people were there to watch and listen to the band, not those losers waiting for something heavy enough to start moshing in the front row.

It’s not about being hardcore or whatever, but there’s always some meathead who feels the need to show everyone else how "brutal" he is.

Those guys seriously piss me off!!!

I just stood by myself near the stage, vibing to every single note.

Kinetic’s new sophomore album just dropped.

It’s killer. Every single track is a hit. I really hope the band finds some time to play a show in a place like Washington, D.C., because with this new material, they’re gonna take over Europe and eventually blow up way beyond the States.

In the USA, Sony/BMG is handling the distribution starting in June.

The band paid tribute to their roots in "Song," where that American chorus fits perfectly.

Breaking, Time of Change, Titan, Song, Salvation Refused... seriously good stuff. Pure fire.

OL actually has a shot at making it, unlike Vanguard.

You seem pretty damn sure when you claim "nothing's happening globally," but even if nothing else, they already landed on the cover of Rolling Stone with their first album, and it's selling in the USA through an official distributor.

They’ve played festivals from Germany all the way to Romania, and tons of fans across Europe and the USA are dying for this new album since the leaks have been getting killer reviews.

They pulled all that off with just a debut at the very start of their career, but I guess according to you, all of THAT is "USELESS" and "SO EASY TO ACHIEVE," right?!

Jason Richardson5 said:more music for old ladies🙄

Taylor Swift is actually a killer band in that genre, not just for local scenes but globally too.

You call it "music for old ladies" just because there's a female vocalist and they play gothic industrial, so in your head, it's trash.

A ton of mediocre foreign bands blow up and headline massive festivals, so give me one single valid reason why Taylor Swift is worse than them.

That kind of music isn't my cup of tea, but Taylor Swift is way better than Evanescence for example, and there will always be an audience for this stuff.

The whole situation just proves that bands from Washington, D.C. fail because they're stuck in their own bubble. They think being from D.C. is some magic formula for success, but they're just limited.

Taylor Swift only played once in NYC outside of Paradise Lost, and the D.C. crowd barely showed up-(

FATHER, TAYLOR SWIFT, OVERFLOW, ASHES YOU LEAVE, Bambi Molesters... none of them are from D.C., yet all of them are famous across Europe (and the USA), and some are barely even starting their careers.

I wish Taylor Swift nothing but the best. Keep doing your thing and stay true to yourselves.)))
Andrew Ramos38 said:As far as I know, they played at The Fillmore back in 2003 with High on Fire

Didn't realize both bands were already hitting up Chicago back then.

I know Hall of Fame did a solo gig at The Fillmore in 2006 if I remember right (then there was that third show with Metallica at Santa Anita Park, but I didn't bother watching the openers back then).
Morgan Palmer2;32211473 said:I mean... what, you only listen to two bands? Like, either total nobodies or who knows what? Is your taste really that "refined"?

Look, I can only speak for myself.

I'm not about to pretend I know what you think or speak for anyone else. That’s not how this works.

For example, I love Megadeth and Dark Tranquillity, but I don't expect to see them ever at Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. It's not about having "refined" taste—it's just that those aren't exactly global superstars.

But then again, I've been a massive Alice in Chains fan since 1992. I absolutely love them.

So when they were announced for Live Nation, I didn't just say "wow." Honestly, I was practically tearing up from pure joy.

I don't see why that's an issue for you.

Megan Miller31 said:I was talking about last year in terms of plurals—basically every year Coachella has been running. 🙂
Are you telling me you’ve never compared those two festivals? I don't know what their budgets look like, but I'm guessing Lollapalooza has more cash. Whatever, the point is that even with a "tiny" budget compared to Lollapalooza's, Coachella still booked massive names in previous years, so they can do it again this year. Sure, Arcade Fire won a Grammy and all that, they're a great band, but compared to someone like Chains last year, they aren't exactly 🤷
I love both bands and I'm not comparing their music, I just think they had to pay way, way more for Chains than they did for Arcade Fire this year.
Besides, if my memory serves me right, we usually knew a ton of performers by this time in previous years, and now we only know four. I can't predict the future, maybe they'll surprise me or save the best for last, but based on how things look right now, I'm not feeling it.

Lollapalooza has never hosted a single band that actually made me go "wow."

Plus, they'd bring in a lot of bands after they played in America, then try to turn it into some huge deal.

New Rock is just outside 124 milesWashington, D.C., and they book bands—just like Burning Man does—that Lollapalooza would have a hard time getting, so Lollapalooza's "exclusives" aren't even a thing.
Alice in Chains, Flaming Lips, Sonic Youth...

That alone is enough for me to say Coachella is way better than Lollapalooza, forever.

Honestly, I haven't seen a single lineup at Lollapalooza that actually made me want to show up.

Well, except maybe Manic Street Preachers, but I already caught them performing in Savannah last year.
